Located on Queen Elizabeth II Island, within Lake Burley Griffin is the National Carillon. It was a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the capital. The structure contains 57 bells in total after an additional four were added during additional refurbishments.

The National Carillon normally rings out on special occasions such as Australia Day. Unfortunately, the Carillon is now under repair and no-one can say when it will ring out again. The authorities will make an announcement when it is up and running again. The National Carillon is composed of 57 bells, which makes it large by world standards. The National Carillon was presented to the people of Australia by the government of Great Britain in 1970 to commemorate the founding of Canberra. The Carillon is located on Queen Elizabeth II Island, in Lake Burley Griffin. The sonorous bells are always pleasant to hear.

Haven't been inside, but, it's nice to walk around the little island. The toilets in the nearby park need to be cleaned more regularly.

The National Carillion is a set of bells, presented to the people of Australia in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establisment of Canberra by Queen Elizabeth II on 26 April 1970. The 50 metre tower was designed in Western Australia, and the bells were cast in the United Kingdom. The tower is located on Aspen Island, overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, near the centre of the nation's capital. The tower is lit at night, making it a striking addition to the Federal capital's skyline. The carillion is quite large by international standards, the concerts are a joy to listen to.

We rented an electric scooter to ride along the lake to this destination.

There are several landmarks around and on the lake but the carillon certainly stands out. Nestled on a small island that you can walk over to via a small bridge, the carillon stands tall overlooking the main basin of the lake. You can read all about it from the information signs and even hear it being played at numerous times.

Pleasant island. You can only walk around the base of the Carillion. There is an information kiosk, but it only displays a couple of photographs, and provides no information. There is a tiny beach on the island, but the water in the lake looked a bit infectious.

We walked from the nearby car park in the hope of going onto the small island on which the Carillon sits only to be confronted by workmen's barriers and huts and a sign saying that the Carillon was temporarily closed until April 2020 which was disappointing.
The Carillon is a tower that stands approximately 50 metres tall on a small island within Lake Burley Griffin that houses 55 different sized bells. The Carillon was a gift from the British Government to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canberra.
The white tower is quite striking and can be seen from many vantage points around Lake Burley Griffin and even stands out when viewing the lake from the Mount Ainslie Lookout.
Will hopefully hear the bells when the refurbishments are completed and we are next in Canberra.

Excellent carillon, one of the top 10 I’ve ever been too for sure. Coming back on a day when the bells are going is now firmly on my bucket list of things to do before the Gherigs gets me.

The National Carillon is a wonderful sight. We have seen it, from a distance, on numerous occasions, during visits to Canberra. It is always a stopper and is worth watching and listening to whenever it is working. The sound is quite beautiful. And the views over the Lake are also superb!
