This park is fascinating. So much aboriginal culture and beautiful landscapes to be seen. Brooke, our guide, was excellent. She had a great sense of humour and made the tour fun. I would suggest you check the state of the roads before heading out particularly if there has been rainfall. The drive was tricky in parts (55kms of sealed road and 75kms on unsealed roads). One couple on our tour got bogged on the way out. Luckily the park guides towed them out and they didn't miss the tour. Wear sensible walking shoes and pack water and a picnic lunch to enjoy more of the park after the tour.

Not particularly well known and a little off the beaten track, Mutawintji proved to be one of those unexpected little gems.

Located. a couple of hours NE of Broken Hill, access is by half sealed, half unsealed road. The unsealed section was of reasonable quality and no problems. At all.

We stayed at Homestead Creek campground which was excellent: The sites, which you have to book online, were well spaced and each had a fire pit and bench. The flushing toilets and hot water showers were excellent: excellent amenities given where you are,

There are several walks that can be undertaken: the countryside is spectacular. An original historic site tours are on offer.

The gorge circuit walk should not be missed: scenery and views are spectacular although, in a couple of places, identifying the way forward was not straight-forward.

Excellent.

A must do when visiting Broken Hill. If driving a non 4WD car road out has approx 90KM of dirt to visitors centre, its ok just need to take is easy. Tour was fantastic learned lots about the local indigenous people by Keanu our guide. Saw ancient rock carvings and rock art which were great.

Walked to the gorge and found the terrain amazing. Lots of birdlife around, especially at the campsite. Worth the trip.

I hate being critical but........ We went there 45 years ago and travelled from Sydney to Broken Hill. Mutawintji was our major event. We rang and found out tour times. We drove out well in time. The ranger never turned up. There were other travellers waiting too. There was no mobile reception on either network. The circular walk was barricaded off. The paintings required a guide. The Gorge walk was poorly documented. In fact all the signs need refreshing. We simply wanted to leave. The sign postage on departure is incomplete and we ended up travelling for 15 minutes in the wrong direction. If you must, plan to travel there mid year.

We all had a great time with our knowledgeable and humurous indigenous guide. Spectacular gorges and amazing history of the area over thousands of years. Huge corroboree ground. More stone carvings than can count. Easy to access hand stencil art. A must visit.

Our stop over between White Cliffs and Broken Hill. We really enjoyed the Gorge Walk, allow 2-3 hrs. The Rockholes loop walk had specular views, although we ran out of time to do the whole circuit, this loop also took 2-3 hrs. The camp ground had excellent facilities with showers and toilets.

A highlight of our trip to outback NSW.
Do the guided aboriginal heritage walk (but call beforehand to find out when it's running).

In these covid times you're meant to book for camping with national parks - and definitely book in school holiday times.
The campground was adequate - lots of firepits, a gas barbq, toilets and supposedly hot showers (we missed the hot water).
[Check out the national park website]
Around the campground were many bird varieties - pairing up and looking for suitable tree hollows to nest.
Within walking distance of the campground are the Homestead Creek Gorge walks. Well worth doing - allow 1/2 a day to full the longer ones.
A short drive away is the Mutawintji gorge walk - this involves a 40 minute exposed walk across open plain to the gorge (20 minutes). Worth doing, but in warmer times do it early in the day and take water.

Highlight: Do the heritage site tour (run by Mutawintji Eco Tours, $50 per adult) - it doesn't run every day, and the timing was a bit fluid when we were there (just starting up again post covid shutdown) - they come past the campground around 9-9:30 in the morning. Or you can book and travel from Broken Hill.
The tour covers how the location was a meeting ground for aboriginal groups from a wide area. There are numerous examples of rock art and engravings, which Keanu (guide) explains. And he identifies many of the plants and their uses. You're mostly out in the open, so wear a hat and take some water. Allow 3-4 hours from the campground return. There are toilets in the visitor centre.

An excellent place to visit for a week or so. Easily accessible by all but the smallest car. Never had a problem with the roads in 6 visits.
