An oceanscape on a par with the world's most famous coasts. We parked at the lot at the end of the road, took the steep path up to the near headland, then walked "up top" to nearly South Bay. We descended to the shoreline on one of several connecting paths and made our way back. These paths down the cliffside enable one to make the hike long or short. Just before arriving back at the car park we stood with others and watched a number of seals sunning themselves on the rocks.

Walked it a couple of times, sunrise is amazing! 5 minutes walk to the top from the carpark and then easy going from there. Great views over to the other side of the peninsula, saw both dolphins and seals. Then headed down and walked around the base - great as well. Uncrowded - can walk right from town if you like. Enjoyed it immensely so went 3 or 4 times!

A great half day hike with spectacular scenery. Be prepared to use up to 6 hours of walking with room to rest and enjoying the views.

Beautiful walk from end to end you can take from
The top of the hill or walk along the seaside both are beautiful
We did both.. also a large seal colony that sun bathes there

Excelente para um passeio de bicicleta desde a cidade. O local é muito interessante e a subida ao monte adjacente proporciona uma visão da área e de Kaikora muito bonito. Estar perto do mar pleno de vida foi espectacular. A não perder e a visitar

The loop walk (about 12km or so) has a bit of everything. If you start at the carpark on either side you have a choice of going up to land and walking along the top, then returning along the rocks- or the other way around. On the top you get views of the ocean while walking through farmland and scrub, alongside cows and everything. Some of it is boardwalk along trees. The bottom is amazing, seals everywhere and lots of things to climb.

Great walk. 2/4 minutes of steep walking to get to the top of the path but rewarded with great views. Path levels out from the top

This is a fabulous walk, provided you skip most of it.
If you do the full loop from town, most of the walk is a concrete footpath, or boardwalk, alongside the road, with nothing to see apart from the ocean (which is lovely, but doesn’t change until the very end of the road).
The best way to do this is drive to the very end of the road, park in the car park, walk along the rocks below the cliff until Whalers Bay, then follow the path and steps up to the headland and access the proper walk all the way back to the car park.
This will take you a couple of hours at most, and bring you right up close to the seals, and then give you the wonderful views all the way back. (Or vice versa, cliff then reef is fine).
Stop off at the crayfish van on the way there or back for lunch, and you’ve done the best of Kaikōura without the 2 hour slog along the road.

Great view over the horizon and quite challenging to walk over the rock because it wasn’t smooth and have to be really careful but overall, it was a great walk.

Not easy to navigate as very uneven and rocky. Very few seals around, although we were lucky enough to come across a dozing baby. Maybe better on a brighter day (it was drizzly). A better option is Ohau Point, a short drive away.

Hi there! I am staying in Kaikoura this coming weekend. I'd like to do this walk as I believe the Ohau walkway is still shut? Could someone please confirm this.
For this walk, is there a beginning and it end point?

Not sure about Ohau walkway, but quite possible after the earthquake. The place I started on the walkway was at the Port Kean viewpoint (there's a car park near there to drive up to so you can start the walk). I heard the other end of the walkway starts in town somewhere - but I didn't complete the entire walk, so I'm not sure.

As I arrive at the cruise terminal, I would like to know, whether it's possible to reach this walkway by foot or if I need transportation to go there. How far from the cruise terminal does it start? I'm a good walker. Thank you for your information.

Yes, you could walk there, but it'll take you ~45 minutes. (The walk is easy, though - and the scenery will be lovely.)

Good day, I will be driving from Blenheim to Christchurch and was wanting to stop in Kaikoura for a day or for a walk. Perhaps the Peninsula Walkway. Question please: 1. Does it cost to do the walk and 2. How long does it normally take to do the walk and enjoy the animals? AND, if we decide to stay in Kaikoura for the night, where might we look? Thanks so much DMH

Sorry, no idea about the walk. About staying in the area, they were repairing from earthquake damage so should be done now, but we saw some lovely places that we drove by.

Hola!

HI there...you will love your trip to Kaikoura. Like the lyrics in the song by Crowded House...NZ is 4 seasons in one day. Your days are set and you can't control the weather, so just relax and enjoy. We started our peninsula walk from in town...we grabbed a coffee and a snack then just headed off on a nice walk.

We have a young child (14month old). Is it possible to push a pram on the walkway?

You've probably already been and found out for yourself that most of the track (apart from a side track descending to the beach at Whaler's Cove) is fine with a pram, so I'm answering for other people who might read this. From South Bay there is a section that is fully wheelchair accessible, but I don't remember there being steps coming up the other side, from Point Kean. If there were they were long low rise ones on a paved surface that you'd manage easily.
