Situada entre las hoces del Huécar y del Júcar era ya un enclave inaccesible. Construida por los árabes tras el califato de Córdoba y amurallada.
La excepcional empleada-guía-particular que nos tocó en la oficina de turismo nos planificó una visita por las calles lindantes a cada una de las hoces. Empezamos por la catedral y seguimos hacia arriba por la ronda Julián Romero, de mirador en mirador con vistas inigualables, pasadizos, hasta el castillo con la hoz del Huécar a nuestra derecha.
Visita a San Pedro y de nuevo desde la plaza Mayor pasamos a la hoz del Júcar, otros miradores hasta llegar a la horrible plaza Mangana con su torre del reloj, que fue el emplazamiento de la alcazaba árabe y del barrio judío después, convertida ahora en un bodrio. De allí nos vamos a ver los rascacielos de barrio de San Martín, pero antes echamos un vistazo a colección de Roberto Polo en la antigua iglesia de la Santa Cruz.
De allí al Museo de Arte Abstracto Español en una de las casas colgantes y luego, antes de ir a comer, un paseo por calle de los Canónigos hasta el puente de San Pablo para admirar las casas colgantes.
Después de comer, mientras mi mujer se toma tranquilamente un café en el parador, yo me interno en el sendero del poeta Federico Muelas por la ladera del Huécar, que ya lo había investigado por la mañana y subo hasta la zona del castillo. Luego bajo por el camino que lleva a Ntra. Sra. de las Angustias, por la hoz del Júcar, y luego de vuelta a la plaza Mayor.
Una ciudad para perderse y disfrutar de todos sus rincones y de sus miradores que nos descubren ciudades tan encantadas como la famosa encantada.

This historic town is being built by the Moors and this in a defensive position at the heart of the Caliphate of Cordoba. We can say that “Cuenca” is an unusually and very welll-preserved medieval fortified city. Conquered by the Castilians in the 12th century, it became a royal town and bishopric endowed with important buildings, such as Spain's first Gothic cathedral, and the famous casas colgadas (hanging houses), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river. An not only those, you will find on your walk throughout the historic center allot more old buildings, there is indeed allot to see and to take pictures of it.

The old city of Cuenca is a wonderfully rugged place with lots of narrow (and steep!) streets to explore. The various attractions to visit are already included on TA so I don’t need to repeat them here, except for the San Pablo bridge, simply because I reckon you get the best views of Cuenca and the hanging houses from the middle of this pedestrian bridge.

Teníamos un día para recorrer el casco antiguo de Cuenca y ojo porque lo que en un principio fue "esto se recorre en nada" pasó a ser a un "Vamos que no nos da tiempo". Empezamos por la parte alta donde están las ruinas del castillo y fuimos bajando intentando recorrer cada rincón. Entramos en la Iglesia y torre de San Pedro, la Catedral, fuimos a los miradores, torre Mangana, Plaza de la Merced, barrio de San Martín, Museo Tesoro, Ermita de las Angustias, Casas Colgantes, Puente de San pablo, Parador, etc.. Cuando te das cuenta las piernecillas te dicen "Hey tio, ¿lo de hoy no era pasteleo?".., y es que hay mucho que ver.., en la catedral ya se te van al menos 2 horas. Incluso se nos quedó pendiente la subida al Mirador del Cerro del Socorro. Así que si tienes solo un día organízate bien ¿Te das Cuen?

Looked forward very much to visiting the famous fabulous town within stone walls. And we were delighted with our day trip from Valencia.
Hanging houses were great to see, suspended almost over the valley and gorge. Continuing northwards is the evocative Castle ruins and the great arch in stone. Reminded us of the grand entrance archways incorporating the Town Hall that we arrived through by bus.
Near the ruins is the best art gallery in Cuenca, Fundación Antonio Pérez, with its superb modern art collections. For pastoral relaxation Iglesia San Pedro is a lovely stone church with superb interior.
A highlight was Plaza Mayor with a tremendous Cathedral, aforementioned entrance gate and other impressive historic architecture. Museo de Cuenca is very good and close by the Plaza.
Pleasant cafes and restaurants abound and we had fine fare in some.

This is a great place to meander. You will get your exercise with the many uphill slopes throughout the old town. Its cathedral is worth a visit. You should find photographic opportunities around most corners. Its walls are best appreciated from outside the area, the hanging houses on dazzling display too. You could readily spend two nights in this World Heritage Site city to immerse yourself in its glory.

No, hicimos la visita por nuestra cuenta. es bastante sencillo. Aparcamos arriba de la ciudad, vimos la bonitas vistas y fuimos bajando hacia el río, catedral y puente colgante. La visita puede durar 3 - 4 horas aproximadamente. En una mañana se puede ver. En nuestro caso el precio fue el almuerzo en la plaza de la catedral.

I will be staying at The Parador. If I take the foot bridge over to the walled city, is the bridge at the top of the city? Other than walking across the foot bridge for my return to the parador is there an easier way to get back from the city? Thank you.

Thats the easiest way and will take about 10 minutes to the centre of old town!
You can carry on going uphill for another 10 minutes though!

What is the easiest way to walk in Cuenca? I hear that starting at the top of the Casco Viejo and going down visiting the attractions is the way to do it. Could I still find myself going uphill? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The hill only goes in one direction. So if you start at the top it will all be downhill from there.
We started at the footbridge near the parador and took a trail through the valley that ended at the top of the old city, and then we walked down through the city. It was wonderful.
Also, in the old city there is the main road, which is steep and has cars and busses, and there are side paths on either side of the main road, abutting the cliffs. These seem to be less steep - I don't remember how, maybe there are occasional steps. Anyway these are the places to walk.
Finally, one thing is for sure: you have to like walking to enjoy Cuenca.

Yo te recomiendo que vayas un fin de semana entero y ahora en otoño hay unas vistas espectaculares cubierto todo de colores naranjas... Ver Cuenca no sólo se basa en la Catedral o las Casa Colgadas,si no que también hay millones de cosas que ver museos el santuario de las angustias, los rascacielos, la torre de mangana, la ronda Julian Romero , con el Cristo de Pasadizo y su leyenda, los miradores de San Miguel, meterse por rincones y ver una perspectiva distinta....
