Fondata come cappella per l'adorazione di Santa Brigida, nei secoli è stata ampliata fino alla dimensione attuale. L'altare di questa chiesa è un'opera d'arte, con oltre 700 Kg di ambra, per altro non ancora ultimato rispetto al progetto originario. Il prevosto di questa chiesa, a metà degli anni 70, officiava la messa davanti ai cancelli dei cantieri navali dove scoppiò la rivolta di Solidarnosc, cosa che unì il sacerdote alla rivolta. Per questo motivo, questa chiesa diventò il luogo di preghiera dei rivoltosi: ecco perchè sia sull'altare che che in diversi angoli della chiesa è riportato il simbolo di Solidarnosc.

Really impressive to see the vault, Chapels and the amber alter. Amazing history and worth a visit. Close to city centre and good to learn the history

Era la chiesa di Solidarnosc, come si può notare dalle bandierine in metallo che adornano l'esterno dell'edificio e dai diversi ricordi che si trovano all'interno, ma il vero must che fa di questa chiesa qualcosa che va assolutamente visto a Danzica è l'altare tutto in ambra, una vera opera d'arte, ancora in divenire. Spettacolare. Merita una sosta anche l'ossario dall'altro lato rispetto all'altare, che ospita i resti delle suore che in passato occupavano la chiesa. Ingresso a pagamento (5 PLN).

I am Catholic, so I know how to behave in a Catholic church. I'm also an artist, so I paint and make stained glass all the time. I'm appreciative of other artists.
I was looking at the amber, standing still and not doing anything. He came up to me and said 'show some respect'. I was doing nothing disrespectful.
When he was speaking to me he said 'you don't understand' around 5 times and sniggering. I understood everything almost perfectly. He pointed out the tabernacle. I clearly understood what that is, being Catholic.
He said you don't pay to see the alter. This is where the priest stands. But the barrier was removed. He was standing there himself and everyone who visits the amber gets up close.
I would have preferred if he said hello, or a welcome. Rather than saying 'show some respect'.
He told me to move out of the way, and put a couple of visitors in the place I was at, saying 'you can stand here because you are special'.
He pointed out something very small in the alter that I couldn't see. I had my glasses in my hand and said I might see better once I put these on.
As a disabled person I also had to pay the full amount on the entrance.
I don't think I've ever felt so unwelcome, or been so patronized, in any church.
Had he not left me feeling unwelcome, been rude, patronizing, laughed at me, I would have donated some money and bought some things from the shop.
Not really a way to treat a tourist who's trying to enjoy a visit.

Lovely Amber alter, but the highlight was the solidarity Chapel.
Had to look up fancy religious words on Google. Also asked Tamara if relics were part of body or could be worn jewellery.

We visited the church thanks to our tour guide's recommendation. There's an amazing, fantastic alter made of amber in it. It's hard to express with the words how beautiful it is when the sun light touches it - worth to see!

St. Bridget's Church ("Kosciol sw. Brygidy") is an average church, apparently linked with Solidarnosc, is an average church. Only the amber main altar is outstanding.

Amber Altar of the Fatherland in the Basilica of St. Bridget in Dansk - made largely of amber, silver and copper. Created since 2000 on the initiative of priest, according to a design by professor Stanislaw Radwanski.
It is the largest amber object in the world, three times the size of the Amber Room.
Hidden in one of many Dansk churches. Worth to get in and have a good look on amber, devotional, artwork.

No, You can visit this church for free. Sometimes there are sponsored exhibitions (when You must pay for sightseeing), but it happens very rarely. Come and see. Greetings from Gdańsk, Piotr :-)
