This free museum is worth way more than the hour we had before closing to visit it. For anyone who has read about the tragic Batavia shipwreck, it is an absolute don't-miss, but it is full of fascinating exhibits, artifacts, photographs and explanations for anyone with even the faintest interest in history, exploration, survival, treasure hunting and much more. The gift shop looked great, too, with many pertinent books as well as souvenirs.

A rare museum dedicated to shipwrecks. It was unusual because there were so many displays of salvage items from the wreck. Personally, I enjoyed it to a certain extent.

We never planned to visit this museum but were so glad we did. Entrance is free although they do promote the option for you to donate which we did on the way out.
The place is full of artefacts and relics that have been retrieved from shipwrecks in the region which are all beautifully displayed.
We spent a good while talking to one of the staff who was so enthusiastic about making sure we gained the most from our visit.
I would say it's a must-see place in Freo.

This excellent free to enter museum tells the story of the earliest European ships to visit Australia in the early Seventeenth Century. Forget Captain Cook, the Dutch were here nearly 200 years earlier! Fascinating with a wealth of finds salvaged from some of the ships which were wrecked along the coast of Western Australia.

This museum is very interesting. It has clear notations on the exhibits and some actual recovered wrecks. Well worth a visit. K

Had a fantastic visit to the WA Shipwrecks Museum, in particular the Dutch Wrecks exhibition including the massive Batavia display. Very, very impressive. This was capped off by a flying visit to the gift shop to pick up a book for a family member - I asked for a recommendation from someone (turned out to be Geoff (or Jeff)) who recommended a specific book, the reason why and why the others might not be quite as good. Capping this off with half a dozen other book recommendations! He was so knowledgeable on the history and specific books, I couldn't have asked for a better equipped person. Cheers Geoff (or Jeff)!

Outstanding museum, couldn’t find a single thing to say that wasn’t in praise of it. Very interesting, loved the huge reconstruction of a wrecked ship and the information provided was excellent.

Fantastic free museum with some interesting excellent exhibits about multiple Dutch shipwrecks off the WA coast in the 1600’s (including the Batavia) as well as the Dutch mariners that came ashore in the 1600s. Incredible that this is not taught as part of the Education curriculum in the Eastern States of Australia where it’s all about Cook and Flinders. We spent 2 hours there but could have spent a bit longer.

Very informative for those who are proficient in English. Free museum, which doesn't spoil anything. Can be visited quickly and includes some very original pieces

The Shipwrecks Museum is housed in an old building constructed in 1852. There are lots of interesting artifacts that divers have recovered from sunken ships. There is even the remains of the Dutch ship Batavia which sank in 1629.
