No doubt this is a most impressive collection. I just find that a collection that large so focused on portraits is just too monolithic and doesn't quite hold my interest throughout. It's more interesting as historical context than as art.

Popped in on a whim as I was close by. I enjoyed myself. I made a beeline for the “America’s Presidents” exhibition, which is probably the most popular part of the gallery. It was busy but not so packed that it made it unpleasant. The area with the more historical portraits was quieter anyway.
My only negative observation is that some of the lockers on the ground floor appeared to be out of order. It’s great that they are provided free of charge (certainly in Britain you’d have to pay) but I must have tried half a dozen before I found one that worked.

My husband and I went to the combined National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum. It's located in a beautiful building. Numerous artwork and portraits are available. The most popular section seems to be the American Presidents section with portraits of all the U.S. presidents from George Washington to Donald Trump. We did not see one with the current president. We tried to do the whole museum in our time allotment, though I'm not sure we covered it all.

Walking into the National Portrait Gallery is to take a walk through America’s history in a different way than the rest of DC: in the NPG, you find monuments of a different kind -- on canvas, photographic paper, and in three-dimensional brass castings -- and you come face to face with a number of faces whose names define this country’s history. Walking through this past visit, I took in not just the romanticized monochrome image, but seeing also that the curators have tried to present a more accurate picture of the country’s rich complexity. The temporary exhibit when I visited was about the rich and colorful lives of those newly arrived. One highlight in the hall of presidents is Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of our Obama with his recent predecessors (with the exception of Chuck Close’s portrait of Clinton) looking on in staid and reflective depictions, and a life-sized photo of his successor at his back. That leads into a gallery with portraits of leaders of fighters for equal rights. Enter into the NPG and walk through what Walt Whitman sings about in his portrait of America: “Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.” Do visit the NPG, and try not to run from one familiar face to the next; instead wander and read the placards and make new friends. When you get tired, there is plenty of space to relax with a coffee in the courtyard where you also look at the faces of your fellow visitors and museum staff and appreciate a fuller portrait of America.

We have been to the Portrait Gallery to attend a wedding event on a Saturday evening along with 600 guests. Yes, they do have a huge majestic hall to host large gatherings. The ceiling of the hall was three stories high and the inside was beautiful. While we were waiting to enter the venue, we took sneak peak of some of the portraits in the hallway. Parking could be a challenge although garages are located nearby. People usually take metro or bus to cone to visit the museums and art galleries.

Late closing mean't that we could while away a few hours before finding something for dinner. An interesting collection of 'this and that'.
Worth a visit.

The National Portrait Gallery is intertwined with the Smithsonian American Art Museum - same building. What a surprisingly excellent three hours. In fact, when I walked through several famous museums in NYC, I took only a few photos of special items. At this museum, I took 25 photos - so many wonderful drop-jaw objects. I also was introduced to Alma Thomas' excellent paintings. Awesome. It's also free.

Kann man sich mal ansehen, jedoch fand ich bis auf die President Gallary nichts wirklich spannend.
Wer sich für Portaits interessiert ist hier richtig, jedoch waren mir viele Personen auf den Bilder unbekannt.

Co-located with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. This convenient two-in-one experience boasts of a captivating gallery showcasing a large and impressive collection of portraits alongside the exquisite pieces of American Art in the museum.
While a few of the portraits appear simple, you'll find yourself immersed in the beauty of countless remarkable pieces, very detailed and finely crafted. Some portraits are so awe-inspiring that you may find yourself spending several minutes admiring just one. With hundreds of portraits to explore, you could easily spend an entire day solely in the portrait gallery. However, if you have a genuine passion for art, be sure to allocate time for both the portrait gallery and the art museum.
You can also take a moment to relax in the peaceful courtyard or grab lunch before continuing your artistic journey.
The National Portrait Gallery is an exceptional attraction and an absolute delight to visit.

Approximately how long does it take to walk through?

Take a look at the website and determine what you absolutely don’t want to miss. If you arrive a little before the museum opens, yo should not have an isssue with crowds. The presidential portrait exhibit is excellent. Be sure to visit the room where Michelle Obama’s portrait is located!

No wait to enter. I’ve seen a 10-15 minute wait to stand in front of President Obama’s portrait (Weekend), Mrs Obama’s portrait was just crowded.

Hi there :
You should take a look at the National Portrait Gallery's own website.
You'll find quite a lot of helpful information under the VISIT - ACCESSIBILITY section, including the following : "For your comfort, wheelchairs can be borrowed by asking the security officer stationed at each museum entrance".
[It might also be a good idea to "double-check" wheelchair availability with the museum in advance of your intended visit, using the Phone and/or Email details on their website]
Enjoy your visit to this wonderful museum!
How long did it take you?

I went on a Monday, not a Saturday or Sunday. I walked right in, upstairs to see Michelle Obama on the 3rd floor, then down to the 2nd floor to see her husband. Easy breezy.

How far is the National Portrait Gallery from the Convention Center? Is it walkable from hotel/center to the gallery? (Coming to DC in a few weeks for a conference and would love to slip away to visit the Gallery.) Thank you!

As mentioned above the fastest way to get there would be to take the Metro, otherwise it's a fairly short (10 minutes or so) walk.
Do you need tickets in advance?
Frederic S

No, you can simply walk in. If you visit during the week it is fairly quiet and even on weekends, it doesn't feel that busy (it is so vast that you don't notice the crowds!). There is no charge, unless there is a specific exhibition. I recommend half a day at least to see it all or simply go back the following day for a couple of hours. Do not miss the presidential portrait gallery and the contemporary American artists on the top floor. Enjoy!
