I have been to the Phillips numerous times.
But I had never been to Breadfurst up Conn Ave.
Happily, the Phillips cafe is an outpost of Breadfurst! Indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter and food is brought to you.
My husband and I shared a large grilled cheese with salad ( or chips ) on the side + a large latte.

I finally visited this museum for their love event after 5. Bank of America offers cardholders free entry on the 1st weekend of each month and I kept missing out on attending. Therefore, I paid less than $20 to attend. Parking was challenging since it was rush hour and many spaces are reserved for diplomats. There were bracelet making and puzzle pieces to create. There were a lot of attendees and check in went smoothly. The museum had a coat check station as well. None of the employees that we asked for help could assist us. It seemed like volunteers were manning the building. You can look at everything in a hour. Many of the pieces are saddd. The only joyful piece that I can recall was the 3 lawyers picture. I got rosé from the bread furst restaurant but I did not order food because the menu was questionable. When I finally found the bar for the signature drink, it was too late. Check them out if you’ve seen everywhere else.

A small, well curated collection of modern and contemporary works of art. You can walk it all within 90 minutes.
From one of El Greco’s version of St Peter and Monet’s later works to Rothko and Tamayo, there is a little bit for everyone.
I think $20/person is a bit stiff for such a quick visit specially when several areas of the house/gallery were not accessible to guests during my visit.
But, if you have a couple of hours to spare in DC, this gallery is worth visiting.

Despite my three previous trips to Washington, DC, it was my first time in this gorgeous gallery… What a magnificent collection of impressionists, abstractionists, and surprisingly, one superb painting by El Greco: “The Repentant St.Peter”. Also, there are two beautiful works by Van Gogh, one or them, “The Road Menders” is from his Provence period, lovely countryside landscape by Camille Pissarro, portrait of Elena Pavolosky by Modigliani, dancing scenes by Degas, still lifes by Cezanne, and not to forget the pride and joy of the museum: “Luncheon by the Boating Party” by Renoir. For those who like abstractionists there is a whole room of George Braque’s paintings, which I thought are quite interesting. I was literally transported to France for two happy hours… And Georgia O’Keefe’s landscapes made this bright day even brighter.

This is a wonderful museum with a great collection of all periods of art. The art is displayed in the Phillips mansion located on the corner of 21st and Q not far from DuPont Circle. It was only a 15 minute walk from the Park Hyatt where we were staying. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the collection and the history of the Phillips family. The cafe also has very good food.

All I can say is “wow!” The collection and special exhibits were amazing in their breadth and diversity, although the focus is on Impressionist and Modern Art. One of the particularly interesting aspects of this museum were the thematic rooms. Here, we saw, for example, several still life paintings in different styles and from contrasting time periods. The history of the original house and the museum is also quite interesting. All of the staff members from the museum and the cafe were very pleasant and helpful.

It is accessible on foot from Dupont Circle. The National Picture Gallery on the Mall is also great, but there are too many of them to take a close look at, but you can sit back and take a look at the interior of the building, as well as the paintings and sculptures.

Situated in a beautiful DC mansion far from the hustle and bustle of the Smithsonian and steps from DuPont Circle, the Philips Collection is such an integral and unique part of Washington DC’s art scene. I’ve lived in DC for almost 30 years and yesterday was my first trip. I have been missing out in hindsight. The experience is more like walking through someone’s home than a museum. With few docents and no cumbersome ropes and with a no flash policy, the museum trusts you to be a conscientious visitor. The museum focuses mainly on impressionist and modern art which provides focus. Rarely do you see several pieces by the same artist - a broad group is represented here by the likes of Renoir, Picasso, Goya, Bonnard, Matisse, Rodin. And there is a host of works by American artists here as well. At the time of my visit, the Up Close with Paul Cezanne temporary exhibit is being held and it provides much insight into this master and his landscapes, and educated us through the museum’s conservation efforts. Not to be missed is the Migration series by Lawrence. You also can’t miss Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party! Museum shop is well stocked, street parking is limited, and there is a vibrant cafe serving yummy sandwiches and selling fresh bread. Don’t miss the outdoor courtyard and the music room. I can’t wait to see what else the museum has to offer! Admission is $20 (kids 18 and under are free) and first tier membership is $75.

Always a pleasure to visit this small, boutique museum! And this time, an added pleasure was lunching at their cafe with homemade soup and amazing desserts and a plethora of bowls and salads. It seems a number of older adults make a day of it with lunch and a wander about the museum. This visit focused on the life and work of Cezanne and what it takes to restore older art. But the special exhibits are just a small part of the collection. Based in a older home owned by the Phillips family (as was much of the art), it is an experience in art as well as architecture.

For me, the ideal museum should be between small and medium in size, have a very select collection and be a faithful reflection of the taste of its creator. It has to allow a dialogue of impressions and feelings with the visitor and become an exciting memory. There are few museums like this, this is one of them. It's worth the time you have to dedicate to it.

Well, gladly: the collection is closed on Monday, but be sure to see it either Sunday afternoon or Tuesday morning if you have the slightest chance. -- Honestly, I would have thought that anybody using Tripadvisor would also be able to check opening times on the internet--or was the question generated by some sort of evil algorithm?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no restoration work going on--unless it began after my visit on 19 November past. On that day, everything was on show, and to boot there was a special exhibit with foreign loans around Renoir's irresistible Déjeuner des canotiers ('Boatmen's luncheon')...
