Best ever
thg 11 năm 2021
This museum is one of the very best I've ever visited anywhere in the world. Even though I live distant to it, I was inspired to rejoin it, partly because I found such high quality, thoughtfully curated items in the museum shop, and so was able to buy them with the member's discount. That's not the only reason I rejoined, though: they deserve the support for the fantastic job they do of planning, curating, mounting, and publishing their educational offerings. The museum is not huge, and has a pleasing intimacy while still making a big impact. It features top notch, exciting examples of art of the Western world in the modern era, with ample emphasis on diversity. Their wonderful Jacob Lawrence paintings of the Great Migration are a highlight, as excellent temporary exhibitions. I have never been disappointed in this museum--only that sometimes some items have to be rotated out in order to display other important works. I missed William H. Johnson's wonderful folksy paintings that I enjoyed there several times in the past, but was so inspired by works by artists, many of whom represent the very city in which the museum stands. They are really doing something right here; check it out for a great day of art viewing.

Biggers, Thomas, and Canogar Must Sees, Patron's Heads-up
thg 11 năm 2021
Visited the Phillips the day before the Veteran's Holiday in the afternoon. Very impressed with the exhibits of Sanford Biggers and Alma TW. Thomas. Biggers mosiac and quilt cube were refreshing. The Alma Thomas exhibit was rich and well documented. It was my first experience, and I appreciated the introductory video very much. Daniel Canogar's liquid digital display was mesmerizing. I do want to share a major disappointment for me. The museum was arranging some private event and the room housing the Jacob Lawerence exhibit was stacked with chairs, glasses, and staff energy for setting up the event. Also noticed that the Renoir Boating Party now hangs in the room so it seems as a prop for events. It would be helpful to give patrons a heads-up since it signalled to me what was important to the museum management. I came to the District solely to see the migration series, but fortunately enjoyed the exhibitions of Biggers and Thomas.

A very interesting museum - I focused on the second floor for Renoir and others
thg 10 năm 2021
I visited The Phillips Collection in October 2021. I bought a timed-entry ticket online. There are two buildings - the GOH Annex / SANT Building and the Phillips House. I focused my visit on the second floor of the Phillips House which is full of excellent paintings. The star is Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party. I also saw paintings by Van Gogh, Degas, Cezanne, Matisse, Klee, Kandinsky. I skipped the other floors because it was mostly modern art and I am not that interested in modern art. The visit took about an hour and the museum also has a nice gift shop. The Phillips Collection is located about one block (5 minutes walking) from Dupont Circle.

Delightful

The intimate size of the museum coupled with the thoughtful descriptions and wondrous works make for a delightful diversion at the Phillips Collection. A visit to the Sculpture Garden in Hamilton NJ whet my appetite to see Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party in 2D vs 3D. The setting for the painting is in the mansion wing. Many other modern artists adorn the walls moving you to other worlds. Seeing a more impressionistic self portrait by Mondrian alongside his very modern cubist lines and squares was revealing of his character. There are some light moments by exhibiting both the Honore Daumier painting The Uprising and in another room an Oliphant drawing Homage to Daumier of the same painting showing the strength of Daumier’s brush to include onlookers.

Probably Best-Layout Art Museum After Covid Reopening
thg 5 năm 2021
We had timed entry tickets for weekend in May. This is our first visit after reopening of the museum. We were pleasantly surprised. The direction arrows on the floor were well thought out and I actually liked the way it flowed. They moved a lot of paintings all over the place and pleasantly so. Your Number 1 Renior - "Luncheon" is on Ground floor in other building, You will know when you get there. Both of Edward Hopper's paintings came out and were displayed in a same room, including "Sunday". All Bonnard, Van Gogh and Degas are out in full force with many new "modern" works. Placements of these artworks encompass the periods, which I thought very interesting. No complaint. Very Nice. Just following the arrows on the floor and visiting an expanded gift shop (cafe is closed and the cafe space is used by the gift shop), it took us about an hour and forty minutes. A must visit whether you paid or free.

A sanctuary of modern art and safe outing for the pandemic
thg 3 năm 2021
Our latest visit to the Phillips Collection provided a much-needed -- and safe -- respite from our self-imposed isolation during the pandemic. The Phillips is celebrating its 100 anniversary with an exhibit aptly entitled "Seeing Differently," and yet again the curators put together new acquisitions, old familiar works, and borrowed items to provide a brilliant exposition of modern art. We left the gallery walking on air, rejuvenated, and inspired. As always, I marveled at the placement of familiar works in different spaces and alongside different works to create an entirely new context and experience. It's like discovering something you never knew about an old friend or relative.

The Phillips has taken great care to limit attendance with scheduled visit times, reasonable conditions (masks and social distancing) and a one way path to minimize risk of infection during your visit.

If you can, download the Bloomberg Connects app, which provides an excellent guide to the exhibit at the Phillips and two dozen other museums.

We gave ourselves two hours, and it was not enough. Luckily, the current exhibit will be in place until September, so we'll be back soon.

Wonderful, Often Missed, Collection
thg 7 năm 2019
My wife grew up in the region and had often visited the Phillips Collection in a much smaller footprint, but they have expanded and my first visit amazed me as i did not have the Phillips on my 'hot list,' but it should have been. Don't miss this great collection tucked into a easily accessible neighborhood not far from DuPont Circle-you won't regret it.

Vale la visita

Excelente coleccion permanente de arte e interesantes exposiciones temporarias en una bella casona en Dupont Circle. Vale la pena la visita aunque no pertenezca a los museos del Smithsonian y por lo tanto haya que abonar entrada.

Can't beat coming in here for free! Small, but some nice pieces. Tip: at the cafe, get the turkey/cranberry/brie sandwich. It was great, and made the whole visit worthwhile!

Terrific small museum

We didn’t want to leave DC without taking a quick look, about 1 hour, at this museum. Some great art in the collection! The house is also beautiful, especially the fireplaces in the upstairs rooms!
