The National Museum of Asian Art has two parts. The Sackler Gallery is underground and features rotating temporary exhibits. "The Print Generation" featured Japanese prints made during the mid-20th century. One interesting print was a portrait of James Michener, 1957, by Hiratsuka Un'ichi. The artist surrounded Michener with Japanese artworks, including his own at the upper right. The museum has this work in its collections and displayed it to the right of Michener's portrait. It is titled Bunraku Puppet "Yaoya Oshichi", 1952.
"Striking Objects: Contemporary Japanese Metalwork" featured 17 vessels that were made out of hammered metal. The one in my photo by Hagino Noriko (2016) is comprised of over 300 metal strips, hammered together.
The other museum of Asian Art is the Freer Gallery. When Charles Lang Freer donated his collection to the Smithsonian, he attached the conditions that no loan objects could be exhibited and no additional items could be purchased. Hence the Sackler Gallery hosts the temporary exhibitions and the Freer Gallery shows exclusively items from Freer's collection.
One of the treasures of the Freer Gallery is the Peacock Room by James McNeill Whistler. It was painted in 1876-77 for the London townhouse of Frederick Leyland. The mural illustrates the quarrel between Whistler and Leyland. Freer purchased the room in 1904 and brought it to his home in America in order to display his collection of porcelain. It is an experience to go inside the room and admire Whistler's painting and the porcelain displayed on the shelves.

One room in particular stands out here, which is the stunning and gorgeous Peacock room. The rest of the museum was smaller than I thought but what they had on display here was interesting. The outside of this building was also quite pretty.

It was our first time visiting these two galleries. Most people remember them as the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. It wasn't actually called the National Museum of Asian Art until sometime in 2019. It's very fitting since the collections together give us a wider range of Asian and Islamic artifacts to enjoy.
The layout and grouping of the collections are by place and culture. It was a smooth flow as you walk from room to room. It was cool to see artifacts used in rituals that are both cultural and religious. The Southeast Asia exhibit had many Hindu and Buddhist sculptures. I was immediately aware of the ancient wooden sculptures of the Japanese temple guardians that flank the Freer North Corridor. They weren't protecting a galaxy, but they most certainly warded off evil spirits when guarding the Ebaradera temple in Osaka, Japan. These muscular figures protected the Buddha and his followers from beginning to end. That comes from the interpretation of one having an open mouth and the other having a closed mouth. How cool is that?
Each room has its own mystical or spiritual quality. There is an interesting Chinese bronze ceremonial wine vessel in the shape of a bird. It has the beak of a toucan with the body of a Dove/Pigeon. The head of the bird is the lid of the vessel. It dates back to the 5th century. There was also a bronze tapir in the same display case. It comes from the same province as the bird shaped container. Both pieces have such intricate detail. The museum is full of all kinds of interesting treasures.
I was also drawn to a painting in the Americans culture section of the museum that depicted Chinatown in Portland, Oregon. It's called the "Chinese Merchants" by Childe Hassam. The marketplace brings everything and everyone together.
The Freer Courtyard Garden is in the center of the Freer Gallery of Art. It's one of many Smithsonian Gardens. It's a great place to sit and reflect during your museum visit. Make this a part of your day at the Smithsonian.

I visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art. I focused on Chinese art and Japanese art. The Peacock Room and the courtyard were great. The Museum Store was also very interesting. There is a lot of art from other Asian countries plus India, Iran and others if you are interested.

Great first time visit to this museum! Loved how the rooms were sorted by region . I learned so much about a topic I know little about. My kids ages 8-13 loved it too. We found it quiet and peaceful. The docents & front door staff were also exceptionally nice & kind to us. We even got an unexpected & impromptu tour downstairs with Ms Abbott! She was amazing and so kind to my kids . She was so animated in her tour about the different Hindu gods. We also loved the peacock room, as well as the availability of lockers to store our backpacks. Would love to return!

Someone snuck in a little fun for those who are able to spot it. In many ways, this museum is like any other art museum: illustrations and sculpture and other art forms displayed with little plaques to explain to the visitor what you're looking at. But look again at those plaques. Whoever wrote them had some fun. They are filled with artistic references: Spirited Away (a Japanese anime movie), A Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne anyone?), Snow Light, Snow Bright (snow in the painting remind anyone of stars?), Fan Fiction (art based on the styles and subject matter of prior artists), Private Zen (I'm no James Patterson fan, but even I can see the reference), etc, etc. These little jolts make the exhibit more interesting and, for me, stir thought processes about the works being described. Give the author a raise. Oh. And did I mention that this museum has grown and is now vast? Spend half an hour on a piece of it or all day wandering through the building. You won't be able to see it all.

Hello James,
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit the museum. We appreciate your input and your overall review.
Our curators are very knowledgeable of the galleries and exhibits, and on occasion will inscribe a little satire on the plagues to make them more interesting.
Thank you again.

An outstanding exhibition of Shang dynasty excavations (Anyang!), artwork (ritual vessels, jade) and history. Also superb work collected by Freer himself from Tang, Zhou dynasties; early (100 BV Yemen) sculptures, Japanese silk screens, Chinese and Indian Buddhist, Sassanian art explained at the level of the lay appreciator. This museum, its expertise and its curators are a jewel on the Mall.

Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art is a quiet and introspective museum. Beautiful art work and sculptures - very nice visit that was calming, not noisey or overwhelming. Upon entrance, the information desk guides were helpful to provide an overview of the different rooms - the museum is bigger than I expected. Since we could not get into the special exhibit because it reached its capacity, we sat outside and enjoyed interior garden area, which was pleasant respite even in December. The most unfortunate part that detracted from the entire museum was the 2 female security guards overseeing the special exhibit - instead of being attentive to the surroundings and guests, one security guard had her attention directed down to her phone while the other was just leaning against a doorway, head down, picking her teeth with a white dental tool the entire time we waited to try to get in to the room. Um Gross. With such intent given to providing a thoughtful inspiring space, If I were one of the sponsors of this very lovely museum, I would be appalled by the behavior of these staff members. We will return with hopes of seeing a performance and the exhibits again, and maybe better trained security members.

The National Museum of Asian Art is actually two separate museums. It was founded exactly 100 years ago. The Freer Gallery can only display items from Freer's collection so they built an underground museum in the 1980s to display other items. One of the exhibits in the Sackler Gallery was "Park Chan-kyong: Gathering". He toured Buddhist temples in South Korea and took photographs of painted scenes depicting the death of Buddha. The museum sponsored excavations at Anyang, China, in 1929 and the archaeologists discovered that the site was the last capital of the Shang kings. The city was occupied from 1250-1050 BCE. The Sackler Gallery had an excellent exhibit of items found in the excavations.
The Freer Gallery displays Freer's collections. They had an exhibit of items purchased by Freer in Egypt. One room featured Rinpa screens from Japan. I loved Ogata Korin's early 18th century screen which featured cranes. The slight differences among the cranes make them appear to interact with one another. Freer also collected the works of James McNeill Whistler. Its most famous exhibit is the Peacock Room, which Whistler painted for shipping magnate Frederick Leyland to redecorate his London townhouse. Freer purchased the room in 1904 and brought it to his home in America in order to display his collection of porcelain. It is an experience to go inside the room and admire Whistler's painting and the porcelain displayed on the shelves.
