Not my cup of tea. I enjoyed some modern glass, ceramic and wooden pieces on display but quilts was something I didn’t care about. For the super modern art lovers it might be interesting.

The Renwick is the perfect stop in DC. The "rainbow room" as my class of preschoolers called it, is amazing -- the light and shadow opportunities are endless. They bring in interesting and important exhibits. A must see in DC.

Honestly I was disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high. The exterior of the building is glorious. While some pieces were stunning much of this art was too political. I felt like the curated pieces were not about the art or artist but trying to make a statement about the political climate.
The disappointment started when we arrived and the guards or docents at the door barked at those entering. It was bright outside and very hot so people were blinded and then shocked with darkness as they entered. This lead to their confusion of where to go. Being barked at by the employees was not a good start.
The Janet Elcheman nets and weaving were interesting but over the top. Too much and especially with people laying on the floor to look up at the display. Not my cup of tea watching these folks pretending that this was engaging. It was not. The contemporary craft was silly and once piece took up a room and blinked words in neon pink. How is this art? Does it make you think? No, I can not even remember what it said but it was very stupid and a total waste of space. how and why was this piece chosen? Again it was hard to see or understand the oohhing and aahhing over a political message. The boundaries being pushed were not about art but about politics. Okay I get it we are in DC and during an election year but for me that's all the more reason to have a craft art museum celebrate more crafting without biased messages.
I enjoyed the Amish Quilters section, seeing Janneken Smucker quilt collections were lovely. I wish there has been more focus on the history or the Amish and Mennonite practices. Perhaps I needed to sign up for a lecture. I was disappointed that I did not see anything about the religious symbols often used on quilts. I wonder why? Maybe I missed it.
Thankfully this museum was free. While we were there it was crowded. 2pm. The bathrooms were clean and the water fountains easy to use. If you have free time to waste in between your other museums this could work. It will not be on my list again. I am sticking to the National Gallery, Portrait, American Art or Kennedy Library.

Great spot for an after-lunch/afternoon experience. Very nice and pleasant staff greeted us. It is a showcase for a wide variety of arts. Glad to see a building restored and used for the arts instead of torn down. Nice gift shop.

The museum was small but the exhibits were great. We spent a great amount of time here. The security guards were very nice, friendly and helpful regarding where to visit and eat. We will return.

Beautiful museum right across the way from the White House. I do wish there were more exhibits but the ones there are lovely. and who doesn’t love a free museum?!

Not to miss. A jewel of a museum. And free.
Current exhibition focuses on women and fiber art throughout the first floor.
Nice gift shop, too.

This free gallery can be visited when leaving the White House. Dedicated to modern art, it contains some good surprises like this wave room lit in a way to highlight the room. Good store unfortunately expensive.

This is a really wonderful Gallery, always lots of fun, part of the Smithsonian Institution. It focuses on artwork and crafts in the Smithsonian's collections. But that doesn't begin to cover it. Incredible artwork and things created by some of the nation's most interesting and remarkable craftspeople. Truly spectacular stuff.
The building is also a real treasure. It was designed in the late 1850s in the Second Empire Style for William Corcoran, a great early collector of fine art. This architectural style had just caught the attention of American taste makers, and the idea of a public museum was new to Americans. There had been less than a handful up to that point. Corcoran selected American born James Renwick, Jr., then just 41, as the architect for his pioneering building, to be designed in a style new to the United States. Renwick was both inventive and very influential, and it has been renamed for him.
Nearly completed at the opening of the Civil War, it was requisitioned by Secretary of War General Stanton for war support, and General Montgomery C. Meigs converted the building into his headquarters office.
It was not finally returned to Corcoran until the late 1860s. It finally opened to the public in 1874 as one of the nation's first art museums. The Corcoran Museum quickly out grew this building, and moved to their great 1897 Gilded Age Gallery they still occupy just a few blocks over.
This building was put to a variety of uses, and in the late 1950's, it was scheduled for demolition for new government offices along with virtually all the other historic buildings facing Lafayette Square and the White House. Then President Kennedy was elected, and First Lady Jackie Kennedy led the nation in reevaluating the importance of our historic buildings, then being literally destroyed by the thousands. Mrs. Kennedy collaborated with the very inventive American architect John Carl Warnecke, born just 101 years after Renwick, to redesign the government buildings to preserve this architectural treasure along with the others facing the White House and the park. What a success.
The interiors are as Victorian as the outside! Visit this spectacular Victorian for great national treasures. The exhibits are always changing.

A wonderful small museum. I love the emphasis on empathetic connections between artists and materials. My family of 5 spent 90 minutes here and left feeling we learned a lot, had visceral experiences, and were calmer than when we entered (unlike other museums). Bravo.

I totally agree with lynn p in regards to her disappointment due to lack of crowd control at the "Murder Is Her Hobby" exhibit during busy times. I drove from Albany to see this exhibit. Fortunately, I arrived fairly early and was able to see most of the first room of the exhibit. But then the crowds became so unbearable that I just took photos of the crime stories so I could use those and the virtual reality views on the Renwick's site to see the rest. My suggestions would be for the exhibit to have a path guests should follow so everyone will stay in a line and not cut in in front of people who have been waiting longer to see each nutshell. I also think their should either be signs or docents present that urge guests to keep their viewing time politely short. I waited 15 minutes to try to see an exhibit that the group surrounding it decided to dominate while they tried to solve the crime. I just gave up after that... The museum could and SHOULD control that. This is a fabulous exhibit and it's very sad not to be able to see it all due to visitors who do not respect others sharing the space.

Yes, it was crowded but everybody took their turn & were respectful of those waiting. I don't think the intent of the exhibition is to actually solve the scenes so that may cause a problem if visitors seek to dominate the nutshells.

Is it busier on Saturday or Sunday at the Museum? The Nutshell Exhibit is about to close so I was wondering which days would be less busy...?
Đã viết vào 13 tháng 1, 2018
I think both days will be relatively busy. Your best bet I think will be to go early in the day when they open. And don't be afraid to jump around from piece to piece. There's no order really so if one of the 'scenes' is crowded. Jump ahead and then go back.
It was a wonderful exhibit. Be sure to bring a phone to light the exhibits and if you need them, eyeglasses.
There's also very good docent led tours of the permanent collection on the 2nd floor. Check the Renwick's website for the times on the day you choose.

No there are not wheelchairs available. There is an elevator. The only thing I have a hesitation about is the entrance. I would say to contact the museum for an accessible entrance.
