This should not be called a “cocktail bar”. It’s just a regular bar with a grunge feel & hard rock music.
The music was extremely loud, no one could hear each other or the waiters. Now I like loud music....if I’m in a night club or somewhere where there’s dancing. But this bar was too small for that. They only have about 5 “cocktails”....not enough to be called a cocktail bar.
I did have the fried chicken sandwich & it was pretty good but that’s the only good thing I have to say.

I bought this tour and Pass before leaving Australia. While the Hop on Hop off bus tour was useful the sightseeing pass was not. I found that in most cases No pass is required to most museums and sites - they are free. An exception being Arlington Cemetery and it is not covered by this Pass.

Don’t check the website. It is terrible but rumor has it that it is going to be updated soon. Instead go for a drink and good food in a neighborhood that is showing some possibilities for gastro-pub greatness. The executive chef is an up and comer with great ideas that are starting to show on the menu. They recently introduced a weekend brunch that is available from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and features some really filling and innovative dishes. The home fried potatoes have a wonderful gravy and the bacon is thick cut and divine. There is an avocado salad that is bright and refreshing and very filling.
Watch out for the biscuits and gravy - the biscuits were not good and not fresh. The huevos rancheros was filling as was the “murican” breakfast bowl.
Try this unique “hole in the wall.” They want to be great and your feedback is welcome.

My partner and I went to the new Passenger location to try it out because we hadn't been for food. Overall, I much preferred this location to the previous one further down 7th Street from where they started. There's a lot more room here in the menu is larger.
It was basically empty for brunch, so we were able to easily snag a table. I would say it's wasn't ever even half full, so it's a good option for a large group for brunch.
The pork nachos were great, and some of the best nachos I've had in DC. It's rare when you get to the point where there's more toppings than there are chips. The duck carnitas tacos are also very good!
Passenger is known for their cocktails, but we opted for a bottle of cider. They had a few ciders actually, and the waiter helped us pick one that fit what we were eating.
Overall, this is a great place for some food and drink either for a weekend brunch or late night. It does get more crowded at late night.

The soul of the passenger has died. Whereas once, the first iteration of this bar offered excellent service and quality drinks, this new larger version has music so loud that friends can't hear one another - and douchey, self important bartenders that yell at customers.
To end the horrible experience, the owner of this formerly noble establishment showed belligerent indifference when confronted with my unfortunate experience. I mourn for the old passenger.
Go elsewhere. Anywhere else.

Casual bar with good drinks. Quite different from the "first" passenger, but it's nice having more room!

So - have avoided it because I'm not into complicated cocktails and used to date someone who made their own bitters - and am over that whole scene. I'm not into the overthought cocktails / mixologist scene thriving in DC at the moment, but I thoroughly enjoyed their beer selection. Affordable pricing on the beer and a pleasant surprise that they had a good selection. The pork cheek nachos were meh - but the mushroom flat bread was good. The waiter was friendly (handled the one cuckoo person in our group very well) and provided great service.

Some friends and I went to The Passenger to celebrate a birthday, and overall I felt that it didn't live up to the hype that I had heard. I actually had heard a lot of good things about The Passenger from others, especially with it being another opportunity to get craft cocktails. When we arrived, it was sort of empty, but perhaps that is not unusual for Monday night. Luckily, we're able to get a big table right on the window.
First off, I learned that this bar and restaurant doesn't actually have a cocktail menu. While not totally unsurprising, it was still different not have any options and all. The brings me to my main issue with this place: the service just wasn't that great. The whole point of not having a cocktail list is so that you discuss the options and your likes and wants with the server who can craft a drink that best suits you – that's an interesting concept and certainly one I would support. But our server was actually oddly dismissive. When I said that I wanted a bourbon cocktail, she just said, "Do you want to Manhattan?" Why would you go through all the effort of not having a cocktail list and being "that kind" of place, and then just spout off normal selections like Manhattan or Cosmo? That is very useless. At this restaurant, where service is so interval to the experience of eating there and drinking there, they really need to make sure that every single other servers knows not only the ins and outs of liquor, but how to interact on a more personal level than normal waiters do at a bar or restaurant where there's a set menu. No one at the table felt they wanted to have a "discussion" with this dismissive server. Ultimately, I didn't like the no cocktail list concept because they didn't execute it properly at all.
We ordered some food, and it was just average. We had the fried chicken sandwich, but the sandwich at Chick-fil-A is better.
Overall, in my opinion, I don't really know what all the fuss is about with regard to The Passenger. It had a very speakeasy feel with booths and dark lighting, but it wasn't the place that I would overly recommend to a friend who's visiting. I think the buzz around this place will die off soon...or else, it already has died off and that's why the place was empty.

The passenger is a lower key cocktail bar (by DC standards). They have great homemade cocktails and an very well thought out selection of draft and bottled beers. The food is also very good. I wouldn't go as far to say that it is a must see destination, but if you find yourself in that area around happy hour, it would be an excellent option.

The Passenger is probably the best bar I've been to in DC, they have great beers and make amazing mixed drinks. It's a cool, laid back vibe in a city whose bar scene is often unnecessarily pretentious.
The place is famous with locals and is a great way to avoid all of the tourist trap bars further south on 7th street towards the Verizon Center. The bar food is innovative and delicious if overpriced. The place gets way overcrowded on the weekend and loses some of its charm, but if you can get there on an off-night and grab one of the big booths near the door with some friends, it's guaranteed to be a great time.
