Absolutely fantastic. Free admission. The exhibits are exhaustive and very, very interesting. Very large building. Allow plenty of time to spend here if you are a history fanatic. Beautiful, well curated collection. Highly recommend.

Great visit, rich in history

Visiting this building and museum is a remarkable experience. Our docent gave us a fun experience filled with lovely details which made one appreciate the history of the building, history of various times in Americana and an appreciation for the women who managed to purchase the property and build the structure at a time when women couldn’t even vote or own property. An amazing feat and one of DC’s rich cultural centers.

I don't normally write reviews for things, but I felt compelled to do so now. This museum was such a beautiful experience and was my favorite part of my DC trip. I loved that there were very few visitors there and we were able to get a littler private tour from one of the (very knowledgeable!) volunteers there. The architecture is simply beautiful. I learned a lot about the lives of Americans in years past. A delightful experience!

A delightful collection of americana

the museum is centered with a very extensive library. Around the building states have re-created rooms from the past reflective of american life in different parts of the country and reflecting different socio-economic households. The attention to detail and the extent to which these ladies have pursued authenticity is remarkable. It is a great way to see how the past was lived.

A Wonderful Find

I'd made a note of this spot so I could visit on my next trip. So glad I did! There's a small museum of interesting period items, plus rooms furnished period style from states where members come from. Everything from the President Monroe French chairs scandal to a replica of a room where Paul Revere came to warn minutemen of the British invasion, a chandelier reportedly stood under by the Marquise du Lafayette, to a multiculturally inspired room from my home state of California.

The research library is available to visitors and is in the Library of Congress style...beautiful!

I spent two hours here, quite happily exploring. If you love history, stop by!

Christmas Open House

The Daughters of the American Revolution maintain a small museum located just across from the White House but, at Christmas, they celebrate an Open House in their historic national home. Each State delegation has a dedicated room there complete with appointments from a period in state history the chapter has selected. For Open House, there are a number of festively-dressed docents available at the rooms describing the contents which have been dressed up for the holiday and set up with traditional holiday music. The rooms and furnishings are really beautifully done but learning the history behind some of the celebrations and music is an added treat as are the antique toys. Cider and cookies are served in the main hall and the stunning genealogical library is also available for viewing. Although the weather outside was frightful, the atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming and we enjoyed the visit immensely. There is currently a display of quilts and their meanings in the museum and, if you into genealogy, a return visit to the library is a great idea, too.

We went for piece of her mind, and stayed to see the museum. Loved that it was quiet, no crowds and well curated. A pleasure to see.

Docent tours available for Historic Building - Museum's Historical Displays Rotated

Been at this museum numerous times. The museum area was recently redesigned, Displays are attractive and easily visible from all sides as well as for those in wheelchairs. There is handicap access to the building. I enjoy the items as they are not seen in other DC museums and they are from the DAR's large holdings. All display items relate to the history of the United States.

We saw a sign for A Piece of Her Mind - Culture & Technology in American Quilts as we walked by, so we stopped in. We really enjoyed seeing and reading about the quilts.

Wonderful American History

Genealogy Library is ths best. Find many books on families to State collections of historical importance not just the Revolution hut Civil War among other historical books. Americana museum and building rooms are like walking back in time to the states these rooms represent. Then the collections in the museum gallery are the best, see quilts to clothing. Be sure to check what special collection is on display before you go. Definately a treasure in Washington DC and it is the oldest solely women's owned building in the world.
