I was disappointed to find all museums and government buildings closed due to the Covid Curse.
During the week, the main doors are open and you can peek in to see the foyer, but you cannot go inside. A security guard informed us that all museum sites were closed per government order.

A museum "of two" (but not much of either)

One which I would describe as a combo museum of "history & art" (in a beautiful heritage-styled building of "some significant length" and which once was the National Palace as is inscribed all the way at the top), it's a museum which just when it comes to displays is "quite scanty" with actually pretty much just one main room on the 2 levels of that big building (& a few other quite smaller rooms). And as for the history portion, I would say it's scanty not just in the number of displays but also in the historical periods covered with mostly "only the pre-Columbian" as seen in the pottery artifacts (which take up most of that one big main room as mentioned) and the periods such as colonial & early republic just "barely touched" (only some historic photos & such although yes a fairly impressive "big carving scene" likely a depiction of the early republic beside a staircase between the 2 levels). As for the art portion (likely all "temporary exhibits" at the time), there were some interesting ones among the tiny-sized paintings (small enough to not see by just passing but to see only by looking at each one) along the corridors on the 2nd floor, and it was a nice browse of sketches of Tamayo (likely the country's celebrated artist) with his unique style or such of "colorful strokes" (one stroke on each sketch) in a room on the 1st floor. So overall, I would say it was a "cursory glance" of the country & its past at this museum (a bit similar to the experience at the similar palace in Nicaragua although "more colorful" displays in that one) and not kind of an "in-depth learning" about the country (as was the case at about 5 other national museums from Brazil to Mexico).

And nearby (in a "bustling part" of the city with plenty of narrow streets), within just about a 5-minute walk from this museum is the "downtown plaza" Parque Central with the city's "main cathedral" Catedral de San Miguel on one corner of the Plaza (to the left after coming out of here and straight to the other end of the "pedestrian street" lined with shops on both sides with its one end right after this building, and where to the left at about halfway of that street is Iglesia de los Dolores with a nice "souvenir market" close by); and also at about a 5-minute walk from this museum (also to the left after coming out but to the right at the end of the Building instead of going straight on the "pedestrian street") is the "old presidential residence" Antigua Casa Presidencial with not much of displays but a 2nd-floor outdoor area with some nice views around.

Wonderful museum

This wonderful museum in a beautiful historic building in the heart of Tegucigalpa is a must see for anyone visiting. The building alone is worth the visit, but be certain to spend some time in the inviting and informative expositions. And definitely stop by the gift shop on the way out... wonderful finds.

A good place to spend some time iin Tegucigalpa

The museum is in the historic center of the city. Not enough to see unless you are an art aficionado. It's an in an historical building. The area is safe. Adjacent is a pedestrian shoping street. No need to go there for souvenirs. It's and
an easy walk from there to the cathedral and a central park. Good place to observe Honduran daily live.

El Museo para la Identidad Nacional es de lo mejor en Tegucigalpa, se conoce mucho sobre historia, además el lugar es muy bonito y bien conservado. Si no tienes tiempo de ir a Copán durante tu visita, dentro del museo te brindan una experiencia como si estuvieras en las Ruinas de Copán, no olviden que está cerrado los Lunes.

I recommend this place for tourists in Tegucigalpa. The only problem is that is not a safe place but is a must in Tegucigalpa.
