This is a place from where you can see all the action in the Fez tanneries. You can see the lime pits and the dyeing vats. Mint leaves are handed out to distract your noses from the stench of the bird poop used in the tanning process.

Para quem aprecia conhecer aspectos locais, o curtimento de couro artesanal em Fez é algo interessante de visitar.
Ignore os aspectos inseguros, insalubres e de muito mal cheiro (típico do curtimento de couros) do local e admire os poços de tinturas em cores variadas neste ponto turístico de Fez.
Há vários produtos em couro para venda em incontáveis cores: roupas, acessórios e calçados com preços variados e sempre com negociações.

Uno dei luoghi più iconici di Fez e sicuramente tra i più fotografati. Per vederli dall'alto bisogna entrare in una delle tante concerie, vi faranno salire sulla terrazza, il cattivo odore ( uova marce) vi stroncherà lo stomaco ma per attutire il colpo verrete armati di menta da annusare in continuazione. Qui la concia delle pelli avviene con metodi tradizionali il chè significa un lavoro veramente durissimo e non molto salubre. Le tinture sono tutte di origine naturale quindi il colore delle pozze dove la pelle viene tinta varia a secondo della stagione

This is the reason you travel, to see a different world, one that is stay still on time, this activities that are been done for centuries in the same way, to what and be so amazed by it that you realize how far away are from home. To see and reach a point of total humbleness… for me this is a picture that you have at home thinking how bizarre and enigmatic is the world, and human race. The smell is super strong and truly not pleasant, take the bunch of mint that they give you at the entrance and breath from your mouth… other than that PLEASE go enjoy and keep it in your memories for ever. What a place… and people are super nice… of course they want to sell you everything but I didn’t buy anything and they where super nice either way

À voir car c'est unique et à faire en semaine sauf le vendredi pour voir à quel point ces hommes ont un travail dur. En plus c'est en pleine médina.. Vous pourrez y aller par l'odeur... Oui c'est fort.

Desde las terrazas que estan alrededor se puede ver este gran espacio donde tratan la piel. Por supuesto estas terrazas estan dentro de tiendas que venden bolsos, abrigos, y todo lo que este hecho con piel siendo el mejor sitio para comprar no sin antes regatear algo tipico marroquí
Los fesinos te lo indican como Chouara y es indispensable visitarlo para conocer mas de esta ciudad.
Un consejo, no soltar la hierbabuena ya que el olor es muy intenso

I heard that the tanneries were mostly closed for renovations. Any update from current travelers?

We were also there in September 2015 and they told us that they just finished renovating the tannery. As Christina has mentioned, ask your guide or at your Riad for more up to date information. It is highly recommended and well worth a visit.
