A must ! People are so kind and such a great diversity of products offered. My advice is to not pay above 4000 dirhams for a leather jacket

Tolle Aussichts-Terasse auf die alte Gerberei, die durch einen Verkaufsraum einer Kooperative zugänglich ist. SEHR zu empfehlen.

Obwohl ich normalerweise aus Tierschutzgründen auf Lederprodukte komplett verzichte, habe mir in der Kooperative eine MacBook-Tasche aus Ziegenleder anfertigen lassen. Die Leute kamen ins Hotel und haben das MacBook nochmals nachgemessen und mir die fertige Tasche dann vereinbarungsgemäß am nächsten Morgen ins Hotel gebracht.

Klar war die Tasche teurer, als eine ähnliche aus Amazon, dennoch erfreue ich mich an einem ganz besonderen, handwerklich hergestellten Produkt und habe der Kooperative etwas unterstützt.

Leather leather leather!

I had read a lot online about visiting this place. One major thing I saw repeated, was about the smell. When walking up to the building, I was nervous about how bad it would be. There is a man at the door handing out stalks of mint to hold under your nose for those with a strong sense of smell. As I climbed the stairs to get to the roof to view the whole tannery, the smell definitely got stronger. And while I was happy to have the mint, I did not find the smell overpowering or nauseating.
The view of the tannery from the rooftop showed the whole place. The guide was patient and let me walk around and take pictures, even pointing out where to stand to get the best angle. Once I took my photos he explained the tanneries history and the process of the leather. A few of the fun facts were surprising and interesting, but I won’t ruin that for you!
After you view the men working, you’re taken through different rooms of various leather products while you make your way back downstairs. I was amazed at all the different colors the tannery can produce! Purses, shoes, bags, wallets, etc!
Definitely something to check out while in town!

We climbed up the stairs in the old house, past floors and floors of finished leather products, until we came to the top floor where we could see the tanning vats. View from the top is quite unusual and there are a lot of different colors of the vats. Appreciated the explanation of the process they use to prepare the leather. Lots of finished goods for sale and clearly the purpose of the tour is to sell leather goods but we weren't interested and they didn't give us a hard sell so it was a good tour.

Pretty views, bad “guides”, ridiculous prices

We came here, as this is one of the must see sights of Fès. Seeing the tanneries was very interesting, and the information we were given at the shop was informative. We got the iconic pictures of the tanneries. The man who “claimed” is once inside was a little abrasive for my taste. We had already purchased some leather elsewhere that day, so we were not interested in buying.

The man led us through a maze of the store on the way down, we paused in each room, but showed no interest in buying, and did not ask about any prices. We just waited for the “guide” to lead us to the exit of the store.

It was a little sad for me, looking at the hard labor the men who do the actual tanning have. Many develop health problems at relatively young ages because of their working conditions. They live in crumbled ruins at the edge of the city. The profits from the exorbitant prices these leather stores charge are not passed on in any way to the workers who do most of the labor.

If you buy anything here, beware. If you are happy with the price and quality, that’s fine. Fair prices are about 60-70% lower than the initial prices I heard today.

It was incredible to see the ancient Chouara Tannery that has been around since about the 16th century. It reminded us of an artist’s palet! It was filled with stone vats filled with various color dyes for animal hides. Before heading to the top, our tannery guide gave us fresh mint to carry because of the smell of the tannery. The viewing area from above winds you through several stories of leather goods and shops. We saw some beautiful jackets in the shops. Don’t miss the tannery!

A experiência pode ser um pouco estressante, então, por favor, visite a partir da loja número 10 e negocie e pague o preço antecipadamente (geralmente 50 dirhams por pessoa). O local tem um cheiro desagradável, e é triste ver as pessoas trabalhando naquela situação, mas a experiência é certamente única.

Interesting visit to tannery and adjacent leather store.

The tannery was interesting and because it was lunch hour and the tanners were on break and not stirring up the tanning pits it was not very smelly. the visit itself does not take a lot of time. Afterwards we went to La Terrasse Des Tanneurs, the adjacent leather store. The products seemed good though the staff was mildly persistent. However the tour-guide/salesman had a good sense of humor so the bargaining process was fun. My wife and I purchased two leather jackets which we like a lot.

Ancient leather tannery tradition

We were part of an organized tour visiting a tannery. The guide took us up to the roof, where we were able to look down on the many large earthen vats used to dye the leather in any number of different colors. The process (utilizing pigeon dung) is an ancient process that is still being used. After the tour, you're being corralled in the showrooms where we're shown a wide variety of leather jackets, handbags, etc. We did not buy anything. Some places may be good to buy and others might not be. So use caution.
