RIP OFF refund policy. Cancelled 4 days prior to departure and received almost nothing back from a 900 baht fare. Must be the worst rail refund policy of any country in the world.

You don't sleep because of noise all night. The train stops no less than 15 times and the people who come to it do not realize that the whole train is trying to sleep. Furthermore, the couple also makes a lot of noise. Toilets are clean and kept clean. Guys who come to make the bed are very friendly, but the cook was terribly unfriendly. While the boys were coming to transform our bed into a sofa again, we sat down in the wagon (the restaurant) and nobody was sitting here. She brutally chased us away, shame that they chase people who pay a lot of money for this *train off in that mania.

Traveled from Bangkok to Surat Thani in a 1st class private cabin. From arrival the staff were very helpful from the boarding gates to the train. The cabin was very clean and a good space to fit luggage. The toilet is a short walk down the coach, this was kept cleaner than expected during the journey.

Staff come to make the beds for you. For a good night’s sleep, I would recommend to bring an eye mask and ear plugs. When stopping at stations, occasionally people would be shouting or banging their luggage down the corridors. The lights in the cabin turn off but the corridor lights don’t so depends if this bothers you when sleeping. You’re given a blanket which is warm as the cabins do get cold. I did where a fleece as on the top bunk you’re closer to the A/C output. Still a comfortable nights sleep all in all!

Staff will knock to let you know when your stop is next. As a lot of people mention they do tend to get delayed. We only arrived 20mins later than expected, which gives you plenty of time to wake up and get ready!

Overall couldn’t fault anything. Would highly recommend doing this for one as an experience, but also due to the convenience.

Bangkok

Overnight Sleeper Trains In First Class Carriages On CNR & Thai Older Rolling Stock.

Having taken a few overnight sleeper trains between Bangkok & Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai & Hua-Hin I feel able to confidently confirm the following train experiences as the norm & constantly in play. Some aspects great, others not so good!

May I preface the below by stating travelling first class sleeper train in Thailand is by & large a wonderful, fulfilling & easy modality of travel around the country. Still recommended but one must book carefully & knowledgeably!

When travelling on the more modern, newer & faster CNR (Chinese National Railway) carriages in first class, towed by the more powerful diesel powered engines like on the Special Express No. 32 train from Hat Yai Junction to Bangkok & the CNR Express, Rapid newer CNR Express trains to & from Chiang Mai / Rai etc? Well BEWARE of the choking diesel fumes that quite literally pour into the luxurious FIRST CLASS sleeping cabins on the first class carriage!

Asphyxiation is NOT an understatement! Not by any means as the toxic diesel fumes are sucked into that leading first class carriage directly from the earnestly working engines coupled in front of the lead luxury carriage!

This ONLY happens on the more modern CNR Express / Rapid train journeys. Never occurs on the older, slower Thai Railway rolling stock! Not least as the first class sleeper carriage on the older trains is at the rear of the long train.

But do be aware that not only is there one temperature of ice-cold air pouring into one’s sleeper cabin (very nice if in the hot season & gratefully appreciated) but the poisonous choking diesel fumes also sucked into each compartment are less than desirable!

Now to be more accurate the main first class cabins affected are the front 4 double cabins of the first 1st class carriage ONLY! So one is perfectly safe from being fumigated if in the rear two thirds of that leading first class carriage.

So make damned sure you select a cabin towards the rear of that first class carriage & NOT the first 4 double cabins on that first class carriage.

That little problem aside, I highly recommend the safe, comfortable, air conditioned, rolling stock with usual ambient train carriage, engine, railway line noises, sounds, disturbances along with lolling, rocking, rolling & general locomotion in motion that virtually every train delivers!

The staff, security, conductors, maids, stewards & co’ are for the most part positively enchanting & most entertaining, engaging & always happy to help, serve & assist where required.

Top tips are:

1. Bring your own food, snacks, meals, beverages & drinks with you! What is served up in the dining car is just about fit for a developing nation’s army, at best.
2. Bring some warm sleeper clothes or a good polar-tech blanket as the AC operates at full-bore with no temperature control above zero. That’s great in the hot steamy summers, not so good during monsoon / cold season.
3. Ablutions are average at best but manageable, that said I try not to need to have to go during my 12-15 hour journeys.
4. Ear plugs or white noise headset are pluses to soften the usual noises experienced on overnight railway travel.
5. Upper bunks are my preference which is good because the lower bunks all get snapped up first in both first & second class carriages.
6. Choosing the older slower Thai rolling stock over the newer faster modern Chinese manufactured carriages makes for a more comfortable, softer bed, journey & a fresher one ref no fumes being sucked into the rear placed first class carriage/s.
7. Do not expect a Japanese Bullet train experience, be ready to settle back into a leisurely old school enjoyable train journey with all the charm of the Orient.
8. Purchase your tickets directly from D-Ticket Thai State Railways (I am prohibited from giving you the URL) who are far quicker, better, safer & more accurate than using third party websites or providers who take up to 72 hours to revert with a successful purchase or a rejected attempt. Or buy direct at the relevant stations.

Highly recommend but be aware of the issues with air pollution in the front 4 double cabins of any first class carriage on any CNR Express / Rapid overnight train.

Enjoy your experience & perfectly good night’s sleep.

I had my upcoming booking from Hua Hin to Nakhon Si Thammarat (August 18) that I wanted to cancel and get a refund with.

I went to the train station in Nakhon si Thammarat and to my surprise, they charged me 70% cancellation fee. And all I got is 207 baht from my original 697 baht fare.

It's a clear day time robbery.

Not even 50%. Really? I cancelled it way ahead of time but why did I only get 30% of my fare back?

Took Train No. 7 on 2nd class Air-Con (there is no 1st class on Day train) from Bangkok to Chiang Mai that was supposed to be 10 hrs 30 min journey but took an additional 45 min to arrive at the destination. It was the most uncomfortable and unbearable train service I ever experienced. The train was very old, slow and noisy. There was no dining car for this long journey, however, the attendants do take order for rice meal box (at Baht 60) that took them 3 hours to deliver to my seat. Although it was an air-con carriage but after one hour into the journey, the fans were turned on. It was very hot and stuffy throughout the journey. I will not travel on train in Thailand after this bad experience.

Rude kitchen staff, Open toilets that dump onto the tracks are revolting, dirty train and painfully old. No water offered, and as soon as you wake up and open your curtain the couches gets shared which was payed for by you as customer. Left a fowl taste in my mouth. We booked second class and would much rather take a plane next time.

Looking at a budget trip from Koh Lanta down through to Perhentian Islands, we found after research two main options; to fly or to take the SRT RP171 train down.

We opted with the SRT RP171 train down as it was for 2X 3rd class seats from Surat Thani Train Station - Hat Yai Station - Sungai Kolok Station (needed to book two tickets) a fraction of the cost of the flight rounding in at 706 baht (including processing fees online) using the website Baolau.com

Finding a spot on the train in 3rd class was easy enough, just had to politely squeeze into a seat in our allocated carriage number 9 in the 3rd class section of the train but we were lucky to find a spot together. Seat number allocation is no guaranteed so keep that in mind, our seat number was 6-76!

The atmosphere on the train was quite peaceful there were not too many high pitched noises inside, however the windows are all open and so there is a lot of background noise from outside which led us to wear our noise cancellation ear buds for the majority of the journey.

The journey takes on paper from 00:11 - 10:50am, it mentions express but I think we stopped at 20 stops along the line. I did not count how many stops there were in total but it was more than I had expected. But it any case we arrived on time. The train was 15 minute delayed which I hear is usual for this train.

Thai people walk through the carriage at every stop and from what I can make out the treats and eats they make are 6 baht - they seem to really need the money as they sell hard to you (also the other Thai people on the train) - in the spirit of being a good tourist I would think it a good idea to keep your lunch meal for the lady that comes on board for breakfast at around 08:30 her meal looked tasty. We brought a board of 7-eleven snacks just in case but did not really need them. The things we made most use of was some custard filled bread, m&ms, grape candies. I think we have worked out getting fury teeth and to feel sick from junk food is worse now than sucking on flavoured sugars. But see what works for you. No bottled water or food is handed out in 3rd class!

Far out! I thought I had experienced many third world toilets but the pungent smell that engulfs this train and comes from the toilet next to our carriage was mind blowing. I would like to think of myself as having a strong stomach (being a cleaner for many years in my early work life you see a lot of questionable toilet cleaning situations but this tops the list). As part of a fair review you need to be prepared, of course we all know to bring TP and wet wipes and hand sanitizer but additionally I would add bring a nose plug and please wear something that is appropriate for squatting. The toilet is metal and very slippery, the bum gun did not work, there was obviously no flush button, the sink was tiny, the tap broken and no soap, there was no bin, no toilet paper. Just the 100% pure concentration of urine.

I hope this review is useful.

Managed to book online First Class cabin to Bangkok but when I approached the ticketing counter to show my email booking, the staffs said doesnt have my record, not even name checked show up anything. The train was about to leave in another 40 minutes instead I was asked to buy new ticket that meant 3800 baht spend for a seat, incredible expensive rubbish, even Japan bullet train doesnt cost that much. So no choice since they refuse to check once more my booking, I paid 1600 baht. Later I made customer service phone call and was able to retrieve from website my digital booking which I had paid weeks earlier, I asked for refund from counter but was told only 50% refund. That's Thailand government sanctioned robbery! I lost 800 baht in less than 30 minutes. So dont expect Thailand to operate first rate high speed train network, it the same terrible experience. The train travel at 80km/h max and the tracks shake the train alot, not your smooth ride from First World train system. Unless its absolutely necessary best is to avoid long distance train journey.

It was actually really good, comfortable leather recliner seats, plenty of leg room and storage overhead for your luggage... Toilets are very basic a floor indian one, not the best. But were clean at the beginning of the journey. Food is available, but not worth it. Take your own from 7/11 or something.

It was 13 hours in total, but so reasonably priced at just over £10, so a big tick from us 2 female traveler's.

Me, Nicola Kelly from UK,
And Michele from Canada.
