Make the overnight journey between Ha Noi and Lao Cai in style and comfort in one of our 14 compact yet fully-equipped cabins featuring air-conditioning, reading lights, comfortable beds and Sapa-inspired décor. Choose from shared Deluxe 4-berth cabins or VIP cabins, Suite 2-berth cabins.

Book the VIP cabin, 2/cabin. Same size cabin with zero additional amenities. Better to book the 4 beds per cabin and hope only 2 person is assigned to the cabin. Many did that. A much more economical option. Cabin is the same size and decor.
Chapa has a pleasant waiting room on trip from Sapa to Hanoi. It’s air conditioned and has toilet as well as a restaurant within. Did not see any waiting room in Hanoi train station tho.

For a start don’t be fooled by all the positive reviews on their website. I completed an honest review with them but they haven’t posted it! Looks like they only include the 4 and 5 star ones
On arrival at Hanoi station there was no kind of greeting service at all. Wasn’t sure where the waiting area was and the only lady there in uniform was trying to sell taxi rides at the other end. Only when the incoming train arrives do any staff arrive to check you in.
On boarding the train the cabin looked nice and met expectations. However there wasn’t enough room under the bed for my suitcase and it had to go on the floor between the beds. It was impossible to open any bags to get at change of clothes toiletries etc. The bed was so small it was impossible to get comfortable and once the train started it was so noisy sleeping was out of the question even with the earplugs provided. Was woken several times by people banging on the door trying to sell taxi rides and tours.
The toilet areas were better than I was expecting and remained clean during both journeys.
The return was no different except for the Chapa Lounge where there was a proper greeting and checking in service. Didn’t use the shower but it looked okay for what it was. Snacks and drinks were available for sale and the waiting experience was much more civilised.
For the money I paid was extremely disappointed as it failed to live up to the billing it’s given. Give it a try by all means but it’s not a romantic luxury experience that I was hoping for.

The train is very nice. It has different types of cabins And I will not hide that it was a pleasant surprise. We had the third level cabin which was nice comfortable very clean only flaw is that the bathroom was outside, so a bit uncomfortable but was cleaned very frequently so very clean and tidy.
A trip I definitely Recommendation because it was a pleasant and original experience

We slept on the Chapa Express Train (not to be confused with Chapa Express which is not the official company but a third party retailer) on the Lao Cai-Hanoi route in a 4-berth compartment. I was a little skeptical at first but once I got on board I had to change my mind. The carriage is very cozy, in black and white with paintings on the walls (it seemed better than Chapa's other carriages in black and red, darker colors). The bunks are spacious and comfortable with two pillows and duvet (much better than Italian train bunks). Water, soft drinks, tea, chips and snacks, earplugs, toothbrush and comb are offered. There are lights to read in every bed and electrical outlets. The air conditioning vents can be closed. The cleanliness, even of the bathroom, is truly amazing. We travelled well, clearly to take into account bumps and some noise.

I am surprised to read so much positive review and consider it a wonderful experience.
It's awkward. The beds are very small, and hard as the "mattress" is minimal. In addition, the way to climb is not simple and I do not see it possible for older people to climb to the top bunk. In addition the "barrier" of the upper bed is minimal and you spend the night thinking that you will fall.
1 wc for the whole carriage which before leaving the train station was already gross.
Driving is not at all delicate and you spend the journey in brakes and movements.
We were a group of 15 people and no one can sleep at some point.
Lighting is common for all 4 people in the cabin. So you must agree to turn off the light.
The next day you are all day with the feeling of being on 1 boat.
I didn't think it was a recommended experience, really.

They have put a lot of effort into decorating the cabins to make them warm and inviting. The toilet and wash basins at the end of the carriage were clean and similarly decorated. It’s a bit of a slow bumpy ride, but that’s to be expected and we still slept well. I actually wish it went a bit slower as we arrived back in Hanoi at 5:15am.
The Chapa Lounge is nothing to get excited about. It’s just a room with some tables and chairs. The meals there are pretty average. I would skip them next time. Similarly the showers are a disappointment. Nowhere to put your clothes and a bottle of shower gel stuck to the wall is sorely lacking. A shower without soap or shower gel is almost pointless. We skipped a shower there on the way back.

Exceptional service by the agent. Arranged everything smoothly without a hitch. Train was clean, quiet and comfortable, service on board was great as well. Our transfers were also arranged smoothly, and when some other tourists tried to take our seats on one of the transfers, our agent stepped in and swiftly settled it for us within 15 minutes.

We had a good experience with Chapa express. We booked a VIP cabin, and slept as well as could be expected on a train. The train departed and arrived on time, and we were only awoken around 5:00 am for coffee service, which seemed appropriate as we arrived at Lao Cai station 20 minutes later.

If you’re looking for a luxury experience, or even an adequate experience, you’re looking in the wrong place.
From beginning to finish:
> Toilets in the train were wet, dirty, and clogged.
> Staff would knock on your door every 15min in the first couple hours, trying to upsell tours and transportation.
> Beds were very small, no space to stretch your legs.
> Snacks were a few bags of stale nuts and crisps.
> Lounge at Lao Cai with showers was one of the selling points, but we were ushered into the shuttle as soon as we arrived and could not use them.
> Shuttle would wait around the station shouting at people out the window trying to fill all seats with passengers with no pre-bookings.
> Shuttle on the way back picked us up 3h early, and we had to sit around the Lao Cai lounge.
> The so-called lounge is basically a cafe. The advertised top-tier showers were toilet cubicles with shower heads, that smelled like urine. There was no soap or toiletries available.
We booked a “VIP” 2-berth cabin. If we paid even a quarter of what we paid, we would have still felt ripped off.

After reading all the reviews from the different offers, we vere really sceptical about this train ride. We booked the VIP double room with Chapa Express from Lao Cai to Hanoi and honestly, it was much more than we expected after the reviews. The welcome lounge offers a clean toilet, a shower and you could order food even and the room was small but cozy and clean. Free snacks, water and a beer were offered, the toilet was clean and the ride was smooth and punctual. We even managed to sleep a bit. I recommend taking a sleeping mask and maybe earbuds or noise cancelling headphones due to normal train noise, otherwise a really good way to travel and meanwhile also get some relaxation or even sleep.
