Really beautiful cathedral in the midst of a bustling city! We attended mass there and people are very inviting (despite it being a Cantonese mass)

The parish was founded in 1842 by Theodore Joset, the first Apostolic Prefect of Hong Kong, and shortly thereafter work began on a new permanent church. Construction was completed in 1843.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a Grade I Historical Building in Hong Kong, located along Caine Road in the Mid-Levels. This late 19th-century Roman Catholic cathedral is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture and one of the interesting stops along the Central & Western Heritage Trail (Section C). Opening hours are 7am to 7pm daily, the public entrance being at the back at the cathedral.
The present cathedral was constructed between 1883-1889 and includes numerous Gothic Revival features including a Latin cross layout, narrow and tall nave, columns supporting arched vaults, stained glass windows, a centre hanging crucifix and small chapels behind the main alter. The exterior is appealing but it is the interior that is large, quiet, very peaceful and just makes one feel for a few moments that they have escaped the chaotic streets of Hong Kong and been transported to the calm of an old cathedral somewhere in England or northern Europe.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is very near to the western end of the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens and can be combined with a visit there. Alternatively, if you are interested in seeing more historic buildings around Central, refer to the heritage trail mentioned above on the Hong Kong Antiquities and Monuments Office website for more information about others nearby.

I live nearby and it’s a very o peaceful place to visit. Light a candle for a loved one. Regular Sunday service and regular weddings are held here at the weekend so best to visit in the weekdays if possible.

A peaceful 15 minutes spent reflecting in this church. It’s not too far from mid level escalators Caine Road. Free entry and donation if you wish.

อันนี้ไม่ได้ตั้งใจไป แต่เพราะตั้งใจจะไป The Peak ที่เป็นจุดชมวิว แต่เดินหลง เลยไปเจอโบสถ์ ภายในโบสถ์ตกแต่งสวยงานมาก เงียบสงบสุดๆ ถือว่าโชคดีมากที่หลงทางมาเจอ

The church is closed till the end of November 2019 due to major renovation.

Era maggio del 2012 e la diocesi di Hong Kong volle celebrare padre Giuseppe, morto ad Hong Kong nel 1892 di difterite, dopo aver eretto questa cattedrale. Nel cimitero di happy valley troneggia ancor oggi la tomba del mio missionario, e le suore canossiane ne serbano un ricordo devoto ed affettuoso, avendo egli condotto da Venezia ad Hong Kong per prime sei loro compagne, con un viaggio di 42 Giorni. Lo hanno ricordato: la console generale d’Italia; il vicario arcivescovile; due studiosi, uno dei quali giunto apposta da Milano.
La pietra di kowloon con la quale è stata eretta la chiesa è frutto delle fatiche dei missionari e delle Canossiane. Una grande giornata. Grazie Hong Kong.
