Enthralling experience. The Palace stands tall and majestic overlooking the beautiful city of Lhasa. The views of the palace are gorgeous and the views from the palace are great as well. One gets to dive into Buddhist culture and history. Great exercise as well. The sound and light show at night is one of the best of its kind

This is a remarkably well preserved palace but not very many of the 900 rooms are open to the public.
It's 300 steps up (and down) and if you have not acclimatized or are unfit, you will struggle with getting to the top.
It's beautifully lit at night and in some respects looks better at night.
You're not allowed to take pictures once inside the palace.
Book your tickets well in advance to secure an entry time.
Well worth the climb.

Potala Palace was built by Songtsen Gampo in 637CE. It stood on a hilltop like a fortress. There are 13 stories of stone, wood, and granite with many windows. Extending nearly 32 acres, its layout is asymmetrical due to the uneven, hilly terrain. Opposite is Red Square highlighting the CCP leaders.
Potala is divided into the White Palace, signify government. The Red Palace at the middle is Buddhism. The highest is the Dalai Lama Palace are painted in golden yellow. There are reception and stupa halls, shrines, prayer rooms and dormitories for monks inside.We climbed over 2000 steps to reach the the main court yard .
Inside the Red Palace are sacred Buddhist scriptures and decorative paintings, cravings of wood and clay. There are libraries of Tibetan Buddhist scrolls and scripts. The wedding murals of Princess Wencheng and Songtsen Gampo are highlighted. Over 1800 grottoes for various deities are at the top.No photographs allowed inside.

Certainly you can not go to Lhasa and not visit it. And the icon of Lhasa... maybe I expected more... because for the expectation was high...!! I do not know I liked it much more from the outside for its majesty '... and the night view when it is illuminated ..

When you think of Lhasa, the first thing that comes to mind is the Potala Palace, it is the truly incredible, gigantic emblem of this city on top of the world.

Firstly, I admit it. I don’t like being packed-in like a sardine. Loud environments. Where one group tries to yell over the next. In the futile process. All they succeed in doing is making it harder for everyone to hear. Nor do I like people deliberately bumping into you to get to the front. Like this is normal civilised behaviour? Perhaps it is in their culture? Not mine. No where else have I experienced such rude people in my entire travels. Recommend: you pick a day/time where there are a respectable number of fellow tourists.
Serene, chilled and a time to connect with the universe?
It is not.
Pick a Metallica concert instead.
Secondly, this is unauthentic. Chinese ‘plastic’ version of what should be a holy place.
Not a Disneyland.
Which sadly in many respects it now is.
Only.
Last time I went to Disneyland I didn’t get my passport/bag checked three times.
Frankly disappointing as an experience.

If you visit only one place in Lhasa, this palace should be it. It’s amazing that the first part of the palace was built in the 7th century and then expanded to its current form in the 15th century, and it’s hard to describe how majestic and beautiful the palace really is from all sides. I very much enjoyed seeing both the inside of the palace in the day and the outside at night when it was all lit up.

Najokazalszy budynek w całym Tybecie . Położony na wysokości 3700 m n.p.m. jest najwyżej położoną tego typu budowlą na świecie .Jego początki sięgają VII wieku a obecną formę budowla zyskała w XVII wieku . Wtedy to w latach 1645-48 zbudowano Biały Pałac a Pałac Czerwony budowano w latach 1690-94 .Pałac Biały miał charakter świecki a Pałac Czerwony religijny .Na 13 kondygnacjach mieści się tu ponad 1000 komnat i ok 10 tyś kapliczek . Znajdują się tu również groby Dalajlamów a dokładnie 8 z 14 .Od nieudanego powstanie w 1959 roku Pałac jest niezamieszkany . Wtedy to również zmuszony został do ucieczki XIV Dalajlama .Obecnie Pałac pełni funkcję Muzeum Narodowego . Od 1994 roku jest wpisany na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO . Przed zwiedzaniem mocno trzeba się uzbroić w cierpliwość . Wszędzie jest tłok i kolejki a do tego ustawiczne kontrole . Wewnątrz nie wolno robić zdjęć a turystom udostępnia się tylko część pomieszczeń . Zorganizowane zwiedzanie trwa około 3 godzin . Na bilecie wejściowym jest krótka historia obiektu z ciekawym zdjęciem .

Definitely one of the 5 most beautiful things I've seen in my life. The palace built at the highest altitude on the planet. House of the Dalai Lama, lots of history, energy, peace!!!! One of the places everyone should visit in their lives.

An UNESCO site in the heart of Lhasa. There’s quite some steps to climb to get to the chambers of the past Lamas and the monastery. Take it slow since you are at above 3,600m elevation. It’s huge and interesting place to visit where you can witness very old statues and past Lamas living areas. At the top, you can also have a good view of Lhasa city with snow cap mountains behind. Definitely worth the visit

How much climbing is involved? Does the one-our tour accommodate people who can't climb quickly? Is there a way to drive partway to the top of the palace?

I counted 342 steps; but this does not include the numerous sections of sloping walkway which also require some climbing. [If I were to include steps and sloping walkway sections, my best guess is around 500 steps]. Just plan on taking it slow. It took us almost 2 hours to walk to the top; which includes stops at various locations to take pictures and site seeing. Buy some water after you go thru security, because you will need water for the long walk.
It appears that a very small portion of the path can be assessed by construction vehicles for maintaining the site; so I don't believe you can drive pathway like other attractions such as Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery.

Has anyone climbed up to the top of the Potala Palace and to the Monastery at Petra? I'd like to know if climbing to the Monastery at Petra is more difficult than climbing to the top of the Potala Palace.

The monastery at Petra is, in my opinion, tougher than Potala. We are in our 50s and not in great shape and found Potola pretty easy. We had no acclimatization time in Lhasa, but took the climb to Potala slow so no big deal at all. For the monastery at Petra we were 15 years younger and in decent shape and found that challenging, but maybe because it was the last hike we did after arriving at Petra early in the morning. You can do either climb if you're out of shape, you're just not going to "enjoy the journey"; the destination will still be awesome!

We would love to go to the Potala Palace. We are in our 60's and from sea level Florida. Do you need to take altitude sickness pills? Was everyone ok with the altitude? Please advise. And how was the food? Thanks...

We would suggest that you take the acetazolamide (Diamox) to prevent altitude sickness while in Lhasa. The only person in our group who suffered from altitude sickness was the woman who did not take the Diamox as a preventative and missed one of the activities and the breakfast and lunch the day after arrival. Luckily, one traveler had extra Diamox and she improved after starting them. You may still feel short of breath in spite of taking the medication but you just need to go slow. In our group of 16 (age range 60 to 70's), 15 of the travelers made it to the top of the Potala Palace. The only person who did not go had back issues.
We liked the food in Lhasa because we found the yak quite tasty. If you like bison, you would probably like the yak. We had a vegan traveler and she had plenty of choices in the restaurants. We ate 3 times in a restaurant in a shopping center and found the food to our liking.
We traveled with a group of 16 with Overseas Adventure Travel so the restaurant choices were left to the guide. He made sure that each restaurant had food that would accommodate the preferences of our group and had access to western style toilets.

We didn't have advanced tickets. Our guide purchased them when we arrived at the Palace. We went around 9 am and there was already a big queue (April), but it moved quickly. Luckily in April the palace isn't too busy yet because when it gets busy there's a one hour time limit. Not sure how'd they'd enforce it though.

This is China, this is a historical building, buil on the side of a very steep hill. Really doesnt cater to ambulent visitors sorry. Its a beautiful view from the outside across the road in the park, day and night. Even the streets are not very wheelchair friendly, like most of China.

I don't believe Oxygen in available at the Palace.
If you take your time and take it easy you will be fine.
I'm in my 60's and was on a walking stick when I visited (I'm not now) and had no problem.
If you are overweight it will be harder.

Our guide provided us with waters so were were fine....do carry wipes with you and the bathrooms are squatty potties with no toilet paper-so have wipes. I drink a lot of water and hence the need to go..lol. The guides will provide you with waters and if now-you can stop and get some.

Ideally if you are in Lhasa acclimatising a day or two before the Potala Palace visit that would be good to acclimatise bit wither way take it steady rest on the way up, not always steps some slopes you need to ascend but all achievable at a steady pace and well worth the experience. Wear a hat as the sun can be strong with the air being clear and this can make your effort seem more difficult if you fail to wear a hat. As advised above drink plenty of water..a phenomenal experience!

The Potala Palace is not a hotel. It was the palace for the Dalai Lama before and it's now a temple. There's always upgrading work in the temple, however the temple is open to tourist everyday. There are plenty of hotels around the Palace
