Tubbataha reef is an amazing diving experience. Beautiful corals, whale shark , mantas - all of it happened during our 5 day live aboard on amazing Stella Maris Explorer boat. It was a lifetime experience!

Mark kosarin is an accomplished dive master, instructor in under water photography. Myself a newly certified open water diver. We decided to visit Tub Taha reef in SuluSea, a Unesco reserve within the world Coral Reef Triangle. We booked our live aboard on Stella Maris Explorer a liveaboard dive boat. Four dives are scheduled daily. Mark did all four dives daily with his huge full frame camera rigs
It would suffice to say that when you break that surface water barrier and open your eyes under water: Behold the vista of colours, shapes of corals as far as eye can see! Then hover over this wonder of nature as long as your air supply lasts. Mark was like a child in wonderland, taking macro, micro, wide angle photographs with his giant camera rig. If I begin to name the corals and other marine life, I will need volumes. The experience is awe inspiring, stretched out for miles on end! you can see Mark Kosarin's photo on his face book page. There are many other photo sites to dazzle you with what nature has created over many millions of years! Go there and experience yourself.Donot forget to take the young ones with you to show them what they will be inheriting and it is their duty to preserve it.

One of the best trips I took. Quite on the expensive sife for me, but it was worth it. The accommodation was comfortable, amenities were great, dive guides and crew were friendly and helpful. Best of all, the dive was a dream.

WOW! What a magical experience I had with Stella Maris and our wonderful adventure to Tubbataha Reef. The boat crew were fantastic, the food was delicious and the accommodations were 1st class for sure. My guides Rambo and Jaz were top-notch professionals and made the trip well worth the cost. I wish I would have booked two weeks for sure.

1 week liveaboard on the Stella Maris in April 2024. Overall the diving was very good. It really is amazing the diversity in site topography in relatively small area, and the different ecology in each are. The coral has clearly seen some typhoon damage and bleaching, looking like the Southern Great Barrier Reef in places. Large schools of jacks and barracudas were refreshing to see given the plundering of "protected" areas in SE Asia that occurred through COVID. There is still plenty of fishing in the area as evidenced by the boats on the horizon. This place is a dish oasis of sorts. Anything that strays too far would be caught for sure.

The water is also really warm. 28-30deg celcius most dives. I only wore a long sleeve rash shirt for sun protection. One dive had a cool up-current at times but it was for about 5 minutes on the whole week I felt cold. Please see below for other aspects of the diving specific to Stella Maris...

So coral is good overall (ranging from large patches of smashed/bleached areas to the occasional patch of prisitine coral. Fish life is very good and diverse. Would I return for the diving? Probably not - better to be had elsewhere I would say.

The Stella Maris was booked through liveaboard.com. My first time using this site as I usually book direct but I was unfamiliar with Philipinne diving so went with them for financial security. Liveaboard.com pestered me in a fairly inefficient way to get required information. This process resulted in 50 emails by the end and became tiresome long before then. Why not just ask for all the information at once? I am not sure. I had to ask them to stop emailing me so much by the end. I don't think they provided a useful service and I will book direct for liveaboards in future.

The Stella Maris itself is a repurposed vessel so not designed for diving. The living spaces were clean and spacious (I had a bunk room). The food was good and plentiful. The crew were attentive and safety focussed. There were some shortcomings, however:

The gear:
I hired most gear as I was on a longer trip. The gear for hire on the boat is well-worn given the rental price (expensive for what you get). They didn't have safety sausages for rental despite being in a high current area. They also messed up my request for some XL gear, confirming it would be availabe then having to rush off somewhere to get it, delaying departure. So below-average value for money for gear.

The dive deck: Is tiny and poorly sep-up, with boxes of stuff impeding access, wetsuits hanging in the way. This is compounded by large groups of people using it all at once. The tiny dive deck, and high step down to the tenders also meant we couldn't put tanks and BCDs on before getting into the tenders, which was another inefficiency. Below average but difficult to fix given the design of the Stella Maris.

Tenders:
Two tenders took guests to the sites from the mothership. This process was again, below average. They crammed 13 people onto these boats which was clearly too many, with waves crashing over the bow at times due to the excess weight in the boat. Everyone had to gear-up in the boat which was messy, especially since it was a guessing-game as to where your gear (fins, weight belt etc) would be each time. Really inefficient and annoying. So after a long wait we would enter, almost always with the instruction to do negative entry, despite there being minimal to no current on most dives, an on one occasion doing so in just over 3m depth which was ridiculous and suffice to say the coral didn't enjoy it.

Guides:
The guides were a friendly bunch with no international cruise director on the boat. This gave it a uniquely Filipino flavour, which was interesting but could arguably be improved. There was minimal briefing compared to what is usually given. This got everyone moving quickly however it's nice to hear about what you should be looking out for.
The goups were huge with the full 21 guests on the boat - we we split into 2 groups, with 2 guides per group. Group allocation was down to individual preference so there was a wide variety of experience in each group, a few photographers in each, some elderly with special needs, and a couple doing their AOW. This made for a bizarre experience trying to accomodate all the needs at once but actually worked out ok due to the avoidance or current diving.
There was no transparency (despite asking) why certain dives were chosen which were clearly not ideal in given conditions e.g. mostly avoiding current, swimming into current for 10 minutes for no real reason, diving on a heavily shadowed wall early in the morning which could have been done as 2nd or 4rd dive in the light etc.
The guides were either not good at finding the more obscure stuff, or couldn't be bothered looking, or both. I found heaps of cool stuff that they swam past, and we weren't allowed to make any noise so most people missed out. So all-in-all I would say average safety, but poor dive planning and guiding.

The Room:
The bunk room I had was clean and tidy. There were satin sheets which were...a unique choice, as was the vomit-green colour-scheme throughout the boat. The toilet didn't flush properly (very low flow) and I suspect it was a water pressure issue. The showers throughout the boat were also low flow. Shower drainage was poor and a shower resulted in a flood of water sloshing all over the bathroom for an hour or two until it eventually drained.
As a side note, there is wifi periodically available due to Star-Link. When it's switched on, all the crew cluster around in the wifi area and watch videos and use up all the bandwidth. This was annoying on one occasion when I was trying to rebook a flight over an internet phone number and the bandwidth was too low. Just as I was about to secure my booking (after 3 hours to calling), I was told the wifi was going to be turned off. I asked for 5 more minutes wifi to finish my booking but was told "no". That was disappointing but I tried again the next day and suceeded.
In all, a comfortable room but very poor shower/toilet due to poor water pressure and drainage. The wifi situation could be improved/optimised to allow better functioning for guests.

Final thoughts:
Tubbataha is a very good dive site with a diverse mix of marine ecology in a small area. I do think there is similar and better value diving elsewhere. The Stella Maris was below my expectations. I've been on liveaboards in numerous countries (and been a return customer many times) for over 20 years.

Liveabord.com, The Stella Maris, and Tubbataha area are not likely going to see me return.

Beautiful reef brimming with life! Lots of healthy corals and a huge number of fish. I saw reef sharks on every dive, we also encountered a hammerhead and a marble ray. Sadly didn’t see a whale shark but thoroughly enjoyed all the dives.

I went on the Stella Maris liveaboard. Fantastic staff looking after us from all 4 dive guides: Rambo, Jas, King & Ryan and Archie and Ian on my chase boat! The entire crew worked together to keep us safe, happy and comfortable for the week. Wonderful food provided regularly from the chefs and very comfortable beds. Thanks all for a great week diving and lots of laughs!

The Seadoors is a very well designed boat, attentive crew, excellent food, perfectly guided dives and very friendly and professional DPs. On the other hand, when I read the comments from a few years ago, I think that we did not do the same cruise....We had bad seas on the way out, but that's the game , and in terms of the richness of the flora and fauna, we were very disappointed. few sharks or other pelagics, no rays, no wonderful schools. On the other hand, on the two dives in one morning, the encounter with a few curious hammerhead sharks saved the rest of the stay. Sorry, but I can't find any comments after 2019 and I think we should start putting a damper on the quality of this site.
For me, we can no longer compare with Indonesia, for example.
Happy diving everyone

Tubbataha is nothing short of AMAZING, the abundance of Marine life is outstanding. I have been lucky enough to do many liveaboards across the globe but Stella Maris for me has been #1, this year will be my 4th trip with these guys and thoroughly recommend. I have never repeated any liveaboard with the exception of this boat, everyone aboard is so supportive and knowledgeable/proud of this wonderful spot. Do yourself a favour and just get it booked… :)
