Fort Siloso, located on the northwestern tip of Sentosa Island, was built in the 1880s on Mount Siloso to aid in protecting the port, particularly the western entrance to Keppel Harbour and the coal stocked nearby.
It was part of Singapore’s coastal defence along with Fort Serapong and Fort Connaught on Pulau Blakang Mati (or Sentosa, as it is known today).
The guns were used to fire at Japanese troops in the western sector of Singapore during the Battle of Singapore leading up to the Japanese Occupation.
Today, the military facility has been converted into a military museum and serves as a tourist attraction on Sentosa. It is the only complete fort in Singapore.

Amazing place where you can learn the singapore military history. Calm environment with nice views. There are some statues and historical places which reflect some old memories. Need to walk for few KM to cover the area. Recommend to visit when you have whole day free.

We walked from the Siloso Point cable car station, went across the Skywalk, that was already fun. The park is pretty shaded, with benches that have fans (you need to press the button to turn then on)
It was quite interesting to read up on the history of this fort. The area is actually quite large. A good break from the beach scene.

Went to Sentosa island and wasn't interested in the amusements but we were determined to walk Fort Siloso even in the heat. We took the skywalk and had some great advantage points. The fort was built in the 19th century and is still in very good shape today. There is a lot to see, but one good thing is there are plenty of water stations to refill your bottles along the way. Huge number of exhibitions and off the beaten path trails.
If your going for the day or staying on Sentosa, make a visit to the fort a must see activity. Highly recommended.

History of Singapore during World War II. If you are interested in learning about a country then this place is a must. Large garden area with the actual bunkers and underground tunnels. There are also mannequins/wax figures to simulate what the scenes may have looked like - there are voice recording to hear what is happening, and many written info plaques to read. There is a museum containing lots of history.

If you are into military history, Fort Siliso is a must, having its origins from around 1880 and closed around 1967, later converted into a museum. There are good guidelines in buildings about the history around the fort.
It has brilliantly attempted to enliven the history behind the fort, however with the main emphasis on World War 2, which had significant significance and impact on Singapore.
Well maintained buildings after the fort was converted into a museum.
Great view of the harbor and the area.

This museum really exceeded my expectations - especially considering that it's completely free. There was a lot to see. The museum management were also really thoughtful in setting up videos to watch and other artefects with a lot of reading, in airconditioned rooms so that guests can take their time to take in the artefacts. There is also maps available so that you don't miss anything along the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

The Fort was a really interesting way to spend a couple of hours - we were really hot so didn't see all of it but enjoyed the exhibition in the Surrender Chamber. Vending machines for cold drinks dotted around the area too. Also appreciated the air condition in the different buildings! Not many staff around and quite a bit of walking (some uphill and stairs) so just be aware of that. A really great way to do something different on Sentosa.

The fort sits in a roughly diamond shaped plot running from the Skywalk to the 12pdr shore battery (W-E) and from Hill top to near coast level (N-S). The W-E axis is about 250m long, the N-S axis is about 100m on the plan (about 120-150m taking into account the slope of the hill).
Within that area you have the Skywalk leading to the upper batteries, the central square and its batteries, the indoor museums on Occupation and Force 136 near the entrance to the Tunnels section. That section leads down to the 12pdr area an then you have the main hill display and the cannons by the old entrance area and the Surrender chamber display. So its quite dense in terms of what is there.

There are tours of Fort Siloso run, you cannot get details as I post due to them being suspended due to Covid19 but their placeholder pages are there. However, the information and detail around the place are such that I have never felt the need to use them at any point in the last 30+ years of visiting. Its easy enough to walk around - just following the different trail markings for different focuses. The Skywalk as the entry point starts with stunning views - you get from that entry point to the centre and can then diverge to whichever trail(s) you wish to follow.

looking at visiting Fort Siloso next May, what is the best way to get there from our hotel in Orchard Road, is it a guided tour, and where can the shuttle buses be caught? Thanks
Đã viết vào 8 tháng 10, 2017
Here's the cheeky option - grab the free shuttle bus from Vivo City for Shangri-La Sentossa resort hotel (goes every 20 mins) - you get onto the Island for free and Fort Siloso is at the entrance to the hotel

Fort Siloso is free - no charge. They just charge if you want to visit the "Surrender Cells".
But these are fake. The real surrender took place in a warehouse near the port, so give this a miss and save yourself the money.
There are shuttle buses that run around the island that can take you to Fort Siloso.
Have a good time.

Hi David B,
Thank you for visiting Fort Siloso!
The Surrender Chambers within Fort Siloso is not the exact location where the surrender documents were signed. However, the Surrender Chambers house two commemorative life size wax re-enactments of two significant WW2 moments in Singapore’s history which have been on display in Sentosa since the 1970s.
The first set showed the British Surrender of Singapore under command of Gen Percival to the invading Japanese forces under Gen Yamashita on 15 Feb 1942. The surrender meeting took place in the Ford Factory in Singapore. This event marked the Fall of Singapore which was considered as an impregnable fortress of the British Empire and the impact of this surrender was felt not only by the British and Australian POWs but also the people of Singapore whose life changed and they lived the hardship of the 3 and half years of Japanese occupation rule.
The second set showed the surrender ceremony of the Japanese forces of South East Asia to the Allied forces under the Supreme Command of Lord Louis Mountbatten on 12 Sep 1945, it took place at the Municipal Building in Singapore. This event marked the moment of victory for the Allied Forces in WW2 war against the Japanese invasion of SE Asia and a relief for the people of Singapore.
These two wax re-enactments are commemorative milestones of the WW2 events in Singapore, they marked the beginning and end of a very difficult and dark period of Japanese Occupation and which changed the history of Singapore.
Cheers & hope to see you on the Island soon!
Sincerely,
Sentosa, The State of Fun
