Wonderful stories and history of all the sites along the way from awesome architecture of Parkview Square and its surroundings to the Sultan Mosque & Istana; Temples; street art & boutiques along Haji Lane, Middle Eastern Scents to the infamous Bugis Street of old; all the way to the Religion hub of Waterloo Street. Our guide Cheyenne has a wonderful personality; full of knowledge and very responsible in ensuring the safety of the group as well as ensuring the group stay together. I definitely had a great time and will look forward to doing more tours with IndieSingapore.

When you’re in Singapore, Kampong Glam is another part of city to explore. Colorful buildings, murals, scents along the way, make up the uniqueness of this place. I say, leisurely stroll at this place and enjoy your day😀

We walked past the Masjid Sultan and street with mainly Turkish restaurants yet to open for business in search for breakfast but managed to find only one place open. The nasi lemak was only OK but the rice with bedegil/tofu was yummy.
We walked past some art murals before reaching Gedung Kuning and the Heritage Centre. Sadly, the Heritage Centre is closed on Mondays. The whole area was very quiet in the morning. We ventured to where Masjid Hajjah Fatimah was but it stated that it was only open for prayers on specific times and on other times by appointment.
It appears that one should only come here after lunch as the place was dead in the morning.

This is a small area, so I don’t see anyone making a day out of it - but it’s definitely a must see in my opinion. Very neat area to look around. I didn’t eat there personally, but there were several appealing restaurants in the area. Sultan Mosque was very impressive.

It was a bad place to walk around yesterday. It sort of has a Muslim feel to it and many interesting shops and restaurants to look at or eat in.

Kampong Glam is a charming little enclave with narrow streets filled with small hotels, restaurants and shops selling merchandise catering to the Malay, Arabic, Middle Eastern communities and customers.
I chanced upon a colourful wall mural (facing Victoria Street) painted by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic. Just by admiring the bright “children in the shopping trolley” was sufficient to brighten my day.
There is also a Vintage Camera Museum in the neighbourhood (corner of Victoria Street and Jalan Kledek) for any photography enthusiasts.
Note: Kledek means sweet potato.
The nearest MRT station is Bugis. Best approach is exit at the Downtown Line (blue line) and walk along Victoria Street.

We are local Singaporeans and yet, after 50+ years, this is the first time my wife and I explore the small streets. Indeed when you walk down the street, it does transform you to a very Middle Eastern feel with the Turkish restaurants and small cafes around.

Singapore's "Muslim Quarter", which has transformed over the years from an Islamic hub full of Arab traders to a Hipster pilgrimage, loved this area

"Kampong Glam" was derived from the Gelam tree which grew in abundance in the area long ago. One group of immigrants was the the successful and influential Arab traders who left their indelible mark when streets in the area were named after Arabian cities such as Arab Street, Bussorah Street, Muscat Street and Baghdad Street in the early 1910s
For my self-guided walk, I focused on some heritage buildings, type of shophouses, some murals and rest stop for food to replenish the energy and to rest the legs. The following is the route I took with my friends. We met at Nicoll Highway MRT station.
1) Hajjah Fatimah Mosque dubbed as "Leaning Tower of Singapore"
2) The Sultan heritage hotel
3) Alsagoff Arab School
4) Former Chong Cheng and Chong Pun School (now Aliwal Arts centre)-An example of Art Deco/Tropical Deco building with the iconic flagstaff at the front facade.
5) North Bridge Road where there is a row of colourful Early Shophouse style quite like those colourful houses in Burano.
6) Between North Bridge Road and Victoria Street, there are five lanes named after fruits [Jln Klapa-coconut, Jln Kledek-sweet potato, Jln Pisang-banana, Jln Pinang-areca nut and a graveyard (Jln Kubor)]. There are some murals by Ernest Zacharevic on the walls of the shophouses facing Victoria Street. At Jln Pinang, there are two Yip Yew Chong's Murals titled "Kampong Glam" and "Satay Man".
7) Sultan Mosque
8) Bussorah Street (pedestrian zone). It is flanked by a row of simple Early style shophouses on one side and, on the other, by Late style shophouses with elaborate façade ornamentations. Thirteen of them ( the only ones left in Singapore) have retained original window shutters that can be swung out into the five-foot-way to display goods. An example can be seen at No.41
9) Gelam Gallery can be found in the two back alleys on either side of Bussorah Street. it is an open air art gallery.
10) Malay heritage Centre
11) Gedung Kuning
12) Kandahar Street.
No. 18 is a typical Art Deco building.
No 20 is only unit with a pop-out balcony (Shanghai Deco style)
Nos 44-54 are examples of Late Shophouse styles with lots of ornamentation. Many displayed fretwork decorations on the eaves of the roof, thus reflecting the influence from traditional Malay building design.
13) Rest stop at Got Luck cafe at Kandahar Street
14) Baghdad street- cafes offering teh halia and teh tarik
15) Sultan Gate used to be popular for its blacksmith shops but there is none left here. There is a Yip Yew Chong Mural here depicting the different ways of making coffee.
16) Haji Lane-narrowest street in Singapore with lots of attractive, colourful murals
17) Bali Lane with its Pita Bread shop and the corner, huge and colourful mural at the junction with Beach Road.
18) Lunch at Prince Coffee House at Beach Road.
19) After lunch, we walked along the colourful Arab Street to our bus stop at Victoria Street.

Is it a safe place at night and does it become a tourist trap also with massage places opening up.

I've never been at night, but I would assume it is just as safe as anywhere else in Singapore, which is to say that it's probably safer than wherever you live now. I would say it is a tourist trap in the morning too if you are in the actual area around the mosque, and that probably doesn't change at night.
I can't tell if you mean legitimate massages or illegitimate massages (you can tell the difference fairly easily. You aren't going to get surprised with a hand down your pants if the place has a storefront facing a road with unobstructed windows. A good rule of thumb is if the place has a woman standing outside with shoes that you wouldn't want to walk in for more than 5 minutes, the rates increase in large increments with them starting at a cheap standard massage, and you don't see anyone getting a massage in the front, then it's not a regular massage. Trust your gut.)

Hello,
This is Mrittika from India. Am visiting Singapore from 23-Feb'15 till 1-Mar'15 for vacation along with my parents. Would like to know about the entry fee per adult for this destination. Let me know if there is a restaurant or café onsite? Also, how do I get there using public transportation from Hotel Park Sovereign-Albert?
Thanks.

It takes about 15 - 20 minutes from your hotel (Hotel Parc Sovereign) to reach Kampong Glam either via foot or public transport. You can either google the route yourself or enquire the directions from your hotel's concierge
The last time I visited the Malay Heritage Museum (formerly the Istana Kampong Glam), the admission was free.
And don't you worry about food wise. You'll be spoilt for choice with the wide variety of cafes and restaurants along Bussorah Street. I would suggest catching an early breakfast at Kampong Glam Cafe. A lovely coffee shop where tourists rub shoulders with the locals :)
Have fun in Singapore!
