This was an adventure to get to. We traveled over bogs, streams, fields and some dangerous terrain to arrive at Volunteer Point. There were a number of penguins here. The weather and terrain can be very rough. Probably the roughest two to three hour ride we have ever had, first over gravel roads, and then over rough terrain. Our driver kept talking about how she prayed we wouldn't break down in the process as we were miles from anywhere. We did drive in a caravan for safety reasons. It is mostly king penguins but there are also some Gentoo and Magellanic penguins as well. The weather was rainy with a very strong wind, but it is the Falklands so you can get some crazy weather in the blink of an eye.

This is one of the best places to see the King Penguins outside of South Georgia. You are on a sandy beach next to the water so the penguins come and go up to a rise with a grassy area where most of them congregate. They are all around.

Patrick Watts Tour to Volunteer Point on Falkland Islands out of Stanley is well worth the trip! When the cruise ship tours were booked, we found his tour and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Many tour companies want money up front, but getting into Stanley via cruise ship is a 50/50 proposition depending on weather. Patrick Watts did not require prepayment. The tour operator met us at the port and got us off and going on our way very quickly. It is a rough, bumpy ride off road to the Point, but our driver did an excellent job making the trip as safe and enjoyable as possible. A stop on the way at the Bake Safe was reflective of the hospitality of the islanders, as well as the packed lunch that was included on the tour. The sight of hundreds of King Penguins, Gentoo and Magellan penguins is breathtaking. Photo ops abound. This was a great location to see so many penguins in one place. A short tour of the town on the way back was also provided. Many thanks to all the tour guides who made this trip possible. We highly recommend this tour company.

The journey out to Volunteer Point is conducted in individual 4x4's that drive in a caravan of 6-7 trucks. The journey out is terrific, with beautiful scenery and plenty of good ol' fashion 4-wheeling. If you gut stuck in the mud (we didn't)...no problem as one of the other range rovers will help you out. The trucks are super comfortable and clearly have been put to the test...so they can be trusted and you'll be super safe.

After about 1.5 hrs from Stanley, one is rewarded with excellent animal viewing and beautiful vistas. Our weather was pouring rain, but even that couldn't damper our excitement and the spirit of adventure. This is King Penguin central with thousands of birds. We saw penguins molting, feeding their young, sitting on a few remaining eggs and traveling back and forth to the sea for something to eat. Also saw rock hoppers and Gentoo penguins here...so if you're looking for penguins, this is definitely the place to come. Definitely not to be missed!

The journey (via 4X4) is as good as the destination. We say numerous king penguins, as well as chin-step and adelie penguins. The views along the water are beautifully and the penguins just accent the event.

With the benefit of TA reviews I booked this tour far in advance of our cruise. Patrick is a pro. He communicates promptly by email answering any and all questions clearly and substantively. Whether the cruise ship docks at Stanley is only a 50/50 proposition, so Patrick doesn’t even take a deposit in advance. Fortunately, we were one of the lucky ones. Our ship docked and we’d arranged with other passengers on the tour to get the first tender to shore. Everything was well-organized and efficient. Nine 4x4 vehicles, each taking 4 passengers took the 2 ½ hour ride, half of which was on “off-road” routes. The ride to Volunteer Point was fun and enjoyable; our guide, Sean, a lifelong Falklander, was great. Sean spent the ride outlining the history of the islands, including the 1982 War, along with offering interesting commentaries about life of Falklanders living on the island. The highlight, of course, was Volunteer Point. Hundreds of King Penguins in one colony, two other colonies of Gentoo Penguins and Magellanic Penguins in burrowed homes on the beach. Photos galore, including video’s of chicks eating from the mothers and watching penguins waddle and scamper to/from the ocean for swimming/feeding. Truly an amazing experience at excellent value with a terrific tour company. As one of the highlights of our South America adventure, I highly recommend this tour!

Volunteer Point has been on the wish list for many years and was always a definite place to visit on a recent trip to the Falkland Islands. A day tour was never going to be enough so we booked a 4 night stay at Volunteer House. It is an adventurous drive to get there but that makes it all the more special. It also means less people. We were lucky there wasn't a cruise ship in Stanley during our stay as that can mean a lot more people doing the day trip. But even so they are only there for a few hours in the middle of the day and the rest of the time it is just the 6 guests staying at Volunteer House.

We didn't get to meet Trudi but Derek looked after us so well. We had a cosy little attic room and shared the bathroom with the rest of the guests. Water pressure is very low but with water at a premium in this remote location it is to be expected. All meals are included and you do eat very very well. A good selection of hot and cold for breakfast, a packed lunch and a delicious dinner kept us very well fed.

The wildlife is next level. There is a huge King Penguin colony a kilometre from the house. Plus Gentoo penguins and lots of birdlife. A gorgeous white sand beach and miles of relatively easy walking complete the picture.

Don't go for a day. If you can manage to get a booking at the house then stay longer. you will not regret it.

The only way to see Volunteer Point is with Patrick Watts tours. I contacted him via email and he was very gracious to accommodate me. The drivers picked us up right outside the ship. Both drivers were very experienced and friendly. Included was a lunch. Bonus USB with pictures. Drivers gave us plenty of time and got us back to Stanley in time to see the city.

I actually visited Volunteer Point whilst on exercise with the Army in The Falklands in October 2014. We paid £15 to a farmer to land in his field (flew there in a Sea King) and the day was ours. We were told to stay away from any nesting penguins, which we did, however, the babies, in their thick brown furry coats were very inquisitive. They would come up to you to have a nose. It was very smelly (fish) but they were the cutest things.
We then wandered over to the beach, where myself and my mate were very fortunate to get right up close to a penguin and touch it. He was lazily lying on his belly on the beach (the penguin, not my mate) and we managed to stroke him.
For me, it was an amazing experience, I'd only ever seen penguins in a zoo and never in the wild. It gave me memories I will cherish forever.

Just an incredible experience! I went in December when the King Penguins were sitting on their eggs but the Gentoos have hatched. There are penguins everywhere, and not at all bothered by our presence. There were lots of other birds around too - plovers, dotterels etc. A fantastic place to visit if you are in the Falklands.

Undoubtedly one of the best places I have ever visited. I genuinely felt like I was in the heart of an Attenborough documentary!

I had the honour of visiting this location twice. Once via an off-road all day trip with Discovery Falklands - what an experience (may I add that I highly recommend Tony’s company - fantastic value for money and a top guy)! Secondly, with the RAF via helicopter - another first for me.

So Volunteer Point - truly brimming with wildlife, all living in their natural habitat. The place is made more special by the fact it is inaccessible and untouched. I was blown away by the sheer magnitude of Penguin life - they were everywhere. After spending a good part of four hours with them in total, i’d be lying if I said I hadn’t fallen in love with them as a species.

Personal tips - wrap up warm (there is a chill out hut but when you’re down on the beach the wind cuts right through you). Bring plenty of food and drink. Make sure your phone is charged - you won’t want to miss out on any photo opportunities. Be courteous - this shouldn’t need much explaining. Lastly, if off-roading with an experienced tour guide, prepare yourself for a bumpy (but enjoyable) ride!

If I could give more than five for my rating I would. Absolutely the number one thing to do if you find yourself in the Falkland Islands. Unforgettable experience!
