Situated on the tip of the Dockyard Point in Stanley, this is known as the Southern Monument. A simple walk from the Museum will get you there.
It was in a fantastic setting and we caught a glimpse of it just as the Sun was reappearing, forming a lovely reflection of the town / surrounding waters. I believe it’s formed from stainless steel and was unveiled in the early months of 2015.
It commemorates the lives of the 28 men and women of the British Antarctic Survey and Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who have lost their lives during their research of the somewhat unknown continent.
The Northern Monument is located in Cambridge and the creator is known as Oliver Barratt. A memorial plaque can also be found in the crypt of St Pauls Cathedral in London.

This is a memorial to 29 British Antarctic Survey people who died in the Antarctic since the first permanent research base was established in 1944. I actually missed seeing this on my first visit to the museum. However, I saw it on the map given out at the visitor's centre and came back.

Were it not for our guide we would have passed it right by without even noticing it was there. The idea behind honoring those it does is terrific. I just wish it were more visible.

Curiosity took me to look at this which is not far from the Historic Museum. It's a memorial to 29 British Antarctic Survey people (including a woman) who have died
in the Antarctic since the first permanent research base was established in 1944. It points towards the Narrows of Stanley's Harbour, through which the researchers would have passed on their way to the Antarctic.

How can I describe this, it is a shiny metal thing behind the museum close to the shore, it did not seem worthy of taking a picture, and when we looked at the map my husband thought that we had not seen it, so I pointed it out in the distance.

Located right behind the Stanley Dockyard museum, this is a polished stainless steel needle about 3.25 metres high, dedicated to the 28 men and one woman of the British Antarctic Survey who have died in the Antarctic since the first permanent research base was established in 1944. It is the Southern Hemisphere component of a larger Antarctic Monument, the Northern Hemisphere component of which is made of oak and situated in Cambridge, England.
