Set just outside Stanley this is an amazing site. The totem pole is quite high and has hundreds of pointers on it. It is all getting a bit jumbled up but worthy of a few minutes to look at it

The Famous Totem Pole .....

A post, I believe to have been erected in 1982, that is situated on the road to Surf Bay. It was originally created by military personnel during the conflict.

To date, the totem pole has been added to by almost forty years worth of locals and tourists. It displays a range of locations from all over the world.

It’s definitely worth a look and you may even wish to add your own hometown to the vast collection of signs!

SO58 stuck on pole.

An iconic part of Stanley, erected post 1982 by service personnel i believe to indicate how far they were from home. It has been added to over the years and somewhere many stop at when visiting the Falklands. I placed a "SO58" sticker on a board - representing Welsh football and Wales to the world from the 1958WC through to Euro16. Cymru am Byth.

Good for photo op

Situated on the Stanley by-pass road, en route to Surf Bay, east of the town, the Totem Pole is a quirky structure signposting distances to various places in the world. Originally created by military personnel, signs have been added by many visitors. Most are villages, towns and cities in the UK at roughly 8,000 miles away but locations in the American continent can also be found, along with Europe and even Russia.

A bit of a hike, but a good photo op!

This place is a bit of a hike from the cruise ship terminal. Located east of downtown along the Stanley bypass road on the way to Surf Bay, it is along the roadside in the middle of no where! At least 1.5 km, maybe more, from the ship terminal along a lonely road with blowing wind! I was expecting a Native American Totem- so I was surprised (and hugely amused) when I got to what is simply an old wooden telephone pole covered with metal and wood signposts pointing to various points of the compass and showing distances to various hometowns! I learned later that this was started by British servicemen posted in the Falklands post 1982. Over the years tourists have added to it. Distance and direction to Murmansk, anyone?
