If you only have one day in Stanley, this is a must-see activity! Greeted by Andrew, we set off by boat across to this very special place called Kidney Island. Andy’s knowledge, expertise and respect for the wildlife made this even more memorable. We landed on the west side of the island and started into the tussock grass following the bellows of resting sealions, and observing various birds of prey and seabirds along the way. Before heading over to the sea cliffs to visit the Rockhopper colonies perched up on the edge of the rocky cliff tops. But then the main event happened! More than 100 thousand sooty sheerwaters start returning to the island as the sunsets they appear in huge numbers scattered across the dusk sky. It was one of the most spectacular natural events I have witnessed and nothing could prepare me for the sheer magnitude of what I was witnessing. This is truly a hidden gem of visiting the Falklands, the good thing is, it is only a short 30 minute boat ride from town. You have to see this and if you are lucky you may get a spectacular Falkland Island sunset as well.

Got a bost from the jetty in Stanley and made short trip to Kidney Island, i thinknit took about 45/60 minutes. Once there be prepared to wade through lots of tussac grass, the island is pretty much 99% covered in it. We went to see the Rockhopper penguin colony on the north side first and then a little further around we saw quite a few sealions, either on the beach or sleeping amongst the grass.
In the evening the Shearwaters cone back to roost which is apparently pretty spectacular, on this occasion i did not stay till sunset.
Definitely worth a visit if you have a morning or afternoon free.

The boat trip to Kidney Island I've made with my co-workers was the best experience in my month in the Falklands. The nature is astonishing wild and of a rustic beauty. Saw lots of rockhopper penguins (actually, got really near a group), and the expedition through the tussac grass is one of the most authentic things to understand a bit of how the settling on the islands happened. By the way, I discovered there that tussac is edible and tastes just like heart of palm. Make sure you see the shearwaters (maritime black birds) coming back at sunset, for there are literally tens of thousands of the birds spinning around in the sky as a school of fish right above you. Make sure also to wear some wellies or really good waterproof boots.

Kidney Island is a small tussock covered island about an hours boat trip from Stanley and is you have the time is well worth a trip.

The island is one of the best examples of tussock grass in the Falkland Islands and is great for kids to explore and have fun; whether its for building a den or jumping from bog to bog (Tussock grass grows in huge bogs close together and each bog can be up to 8ft high).

For the wildlife enthusiasts the island is home to a good population of sea lions and the tussock grass provides great cover for watching them without them seeing you (just be careful when you're walking through the tussock grass not to step on one)

When I asked for an afternoon excursion, the hotel lady and the travel agency manager suggested this place to me and others around while we were stuck with an airport closure on our departure day in Stanley. 6 of us went through Murrell in the north and reached the coast overlooking Kidney Island by 2 4-wheel-drive jeep. A little bit of off-road driving was involved The birds we saw there were mostly rockhopper penguins. It was such a windy afternoon with no rain that I found my body and my camera weighing about 800 grams kept shaking on a very windward spot where colonies of rockhopper penguins were along the coast in our front. One of the 2 drivers offered to take us to a neighbouring spot with a more concentrated colony of rockhopper penguins which was less exposed to strong winds. There we kept taking shots of penguin families and groups of about 10 chicks being looked after by a few adults. A camcorder for scientific research purposes was also there and most of us weer just so happy to be so close to this colony of birds with little fear for people. The weather condition was not that nice for photographers indeed, but the afternoon was still fun and the excursion a bonus to me before my headache for flight changes and travel insurance claim set in.
