This museum is not well advertised, and we stumbled on it by accident. It certainly packs a punch. We had the place to ourselves and the guide took the time to give us a personal tour of the museum, which is an old fort.
It was fascinating to see the rooms decked out in the traditional Portuguese colonial style, with many original artefacts from the colonial times. However, this is not a rose-tinted revue of Portuguese times. The upstairs of the museum has several exhibitions documenting the struggle of the non-Portuguese inhabitants on their road to independence. There are some truly one-of-a-kind exhibits. For example, they have the original independence declaration, the last Portuguese flag to be flown and the first Sao Tomean flag to be flown.

Un des rares endroits touristiques de la ville. 2€ par personne l'entrée et le guide maîtrise le français. Dommage que certaines pièces soient un peu vide, mais cela permet de mieux appréhender l'histoire de l'île. A voir par curiosité donc.

Museu integrado dentro do forte de São Sebastião e relativamente bem conservado.
Vale a pena fazer a visita guiada por um dos guias do museu que mostram as poucas salas, contam um pouco da história de São Tomé e levam-nos ao telhado e ao farol de onde a vista para o mar e para a cidade são agradáveis.
A visita não demora mais de 15 min e custa 2€ por pessoa.

Petit musée intéressant à visiter avec un guide (l’un d’eux maitrise le français, un autre l’anglais). Différentes salles qui retracent les grandes époques de l’île : découverte, esclavage, cultures du café et du cacao, indépendance... illustrées par des objets d’époque (meubles, photos, pièces religieuses) La visite se termine par le phare. Visite courte mais instructive et l’occasion de mieux comprendre l’histoire de l’île.

You get a small 20 min tour from an English and French speaking guide as part of the admission fee of 25 dobra pp.
The exhibition is relatively small but contains some cool old artefacts.
I am not a history boffin,but it seemed to me that the exhibition is a bit one sided and does not tell the full story- but that is just my opinion and I may be wrong.
Nevertheless, should definitely be on your to do list when you have the time.

Adorei a visita ao antigo forte de São Sebastião! É um espaço com um espólio notável, fundamental para quem se quer inteirar da história de São Tomé e Príncipe! Os guias são de uma simpatia fora de série. Recomendo vivamente a visita!

My expectations were low but I'm thankful i took the time to visit the museum. The guide could only speak in Portuguese but we manage to understand her explanations. Very informative and frankly a must if you want to understand a bit the struggles santomeans have gone thru since the islands were discovered by the Portuguese and their economies shaped to fit the needs of the empire.

Um museu é preservação da memória.
O museu nacional de São Tomé é uma vergonha.
Não quero referir-me à qualidade e valia das peças expostas, apenas ao seu cuidado.
Demasiadas pessoas a vigiar e nem uma para limpar o pó.
Mau.
Fortaleza em estrela, a típica fortaleza portuguesa na costa africana. Mau conservada.
Tempo perdido. Salve-se a memória.

O Forte de São Sebastião acolhe o museu que se pretende nacional e ser o fiel depositário de memórias, tradições, lutas e actividades do arquipélago antes e pós-independência. O acervo que acolhe, bem restaurado, organizado e exposto, permitiria atingir melhor tal desiderato. Sim, eu sei que não é um museu europeu... Mas assim, com peças sujas ou danificadas por infiltrações via telhado (destelhado em alguns pontos), portas e janelas (empenadas ou danificadas), deixando também o acervo à mercê do ar marítimo e do pó, não é bonito de ver nem de sentir o que revela. Mais uma vez a idiossincrasia são-tomense traduzida no “leve-leve” tem consequências nefastas. Em boa verdade, aqui não se trata da tal idiossincrasia, trata-se de desleixo. E é pena…

É exatamente o que o JF disse. Eu contratei motorista, com jeep, e fiz esses 3 passeios.
Acrescento uma visita ao mercado da cidade, apesar de por vezes o cheiro não ser o mais agradável.
Não perca uma ida, com tempo, à praia de Inhame, é ótima.
Quanto a restaurantes acrescento o Papa Figos e o PORITES, são muito bons e com preços acessíveis.

We will have a Sao Tome party at my home this month. We are interested to know what kind of party activities folks there enjoy. Perhaps some types of regional games. I understand you are a museum, but wondering if you may have information of this type for me!

Wow! This is a touch above my pay-grade ... I am actually simply a traveller who happened to spend time in the wonderful country, and really can't thrown much light on their recreational habits or hobbies.
