I learned about Big Brother Mouse through Trip advisor. I made it a point to visit this place. The staff there was really helpful as he explained the importance of these books for the children. BBM has a lot of individual books and packs of books ready for purchase. I didn’t volunteer reading books, but I did purchased several packs of books to take to the children at several schools. I visited 4 schools at the village, and the school principal appreciated these books.

I went there 3 times. After a long school day, young boys and girls meet with tourists to improve their english skills. Doesn't matter, if you're not a native english speaker: They just want to practise.
Get an insight of their life, listen and talk. These 2 hours really had a meaning and purpose. They are polite and sweet. They never asked me for anything, but I learned, how hard their life is. Bring some cookies, a fruit, a pen and you can make them happy. If you have the time: invite your student for lunch or dinner: it may be their 1st real meal that week. It's the most fullfilling, satisfying and rewarding experience you can get in Luang Prabang. You can make a difference.

Luang Prabang is an excellent town to visit. It also has an excellent volunteer organization that invites English speakers to assist local students (adults and children) who come in to hone their English skills. The center is located on the street adjacent to the 3 Nagas hotel.
Be aware, these are students who are committed to learning -- their grammar questions can be quite pointed! The students are interesting, interested, and offer an excellent opportunity to learn more about Lao society including the villages from which many of the students have traveled.
This is an incredible organization that seeks to make a real impact on local students through casual (and longer-term) volunteers. It deserves very broad support - M. Collin and several other long-term volunteers will quickly usher you to an eager student - it was the best 6 hours we spent - we regret not going the first day we arrived.

Three of us went to the Big Brother Mouse facility in town in Luang Prabang and chatted with three boys for nearly two hours. The experience was rewarding and meaningful, as each of the boys were genuinely interested in improving their English skills. The boy I chatted with carefully noted several "new" words he was unfamiliar with, and clarified his understanding of them. The informal discussions clearly help sharpen the students' skills, while broadening their perspectives on the world.

A great initiative to help those kids (14-20 y) to improve their English. Reason: they want to get a better life than their parents have. They are thankful that you want to just chat with them. 9-11 and 17-19 h every day.

If you are looking to do something impacting and well worth your time, then I recommend this place. I thoroughly enjoyed having an English conversation with a local guy currently studying at college and looking to improve his English.

BBM started out publishing Laos books and offering tutoring to local Laos people. They still do both and you can help local folks practice their English twice a day in the am and early evening. Bit BBM is also building and overseeing new schools so you can spend a day tutoring pre-school to high school students. It is an amazing experience to be in a local community and share in the excitement of learning. If you’re in town & want to do more than just the ordinary tourist activities, spend some time at BBM. You won’t regret it.

I am so impressed - both with the organisation that had this wonderful idea and made it happen, and with the students who turn up every evening to practise their English.
I was introduced to 4 students (with ages ranging from 15-19) and it was such a pleasure to spend time talking with them. We talked about their families, job aspirations, travel etc. and it was as interesting for me to learn more about the Laotian way of life, as I hope it was for the students practising their English.

Visiting Big Brother Mouse should be on everyone’s to do list and if you have time ( which I highly suggest you make time) it is an enriching experience . Try to go at a time when you can participate and volunteer to speak English with one of the eager young people who are so enthusiastic. I always gain more than I give and learn so much. What an amazing organization . The experience will be with you forever.

Any hostel or guest house in the historic old quarter of Luang Prabang is nearby to Big Brother Mouse, no more than a 15-minute walk and in many cases less. The Big Brother Mouse program is located near the end of the peninsula, near Wat Sene. City Backpackers is perhaps the closest? There is a hostel near Utopia Bar that is close -- Y Not Laos Hostel. Tony Central Hostel. Just look at a map of hostels in the area and pick something that is on the peninsula (which if small and easy to walk, with minimal traffic). LPQ Backpackers is a little further but still definitely easy walking distance.
Note that you can also often get a guesthouse private room in Laos as low as $10-12 as well, just towards the end of the historic district or a little outside of it.

It is in the Old Quarter. You just turn up at either the morning or evening session - check their website for exaxt timings.
