This is a continuation of our one-day bus trip from GuangZhou. In the morning we’d visited KeYuan Garden (TA reviewed) and ‘Pub Street’ which is part of the Xia Ba Fang Historic Conservation Area. What’s more depressing than a closed pub? A whole street of them! The guide assured us that the street heaves at night.
Anyway, after a very nice lunch, included in the ¥99 trip price, we headed of to SongShan Lake.
We entered through the University Road Entrance. Entrance is free. The guide informed us we had an hour to explore the park. To put it simply, the park is a lake surrounded by a smooth tarmac path with entrances around the park.
There are bicycles of various kinds to hire at this entrance, along with various shops and clean toilets.
SWMBO and I followed our crowd, and strolled along the path, occasionally dodging the Lycra-clad cyclists on mountain bikes who hummed by. Why ride a mountain bike when the park is nearly as flat as a pancake?
As we strolled, we could see some of the buildings of HuaWei’s campus. They’re definitely not Chinese style, but an amalgam of European styles. A pity the hoi polloi is not allowed on the campus. I gather it’s very interesting, there’s even a small metro.
We got as far as the SongShan Lake Bridge to Huawai’s campus before the general consensus decided by looking at the dark clouds, that it was going to pour down. En-masse turned around and headed back rather quicker than we came, but not fast enough to avoid the downpour. Luckily SWMBO had an umbrella in her backpack, even so we were quite damp by the time we climbed aboard the bus.
If we go again, we’ll hire a bike made for two, and cycle the whole path.

I went there recently during the National Day holiday in China, so it was likely much busier than usual. It was a little bemusing that the ticketed "beach" area with the best views was closed to visitors. As were the boat rental services. You'd think they'd want to milk as much of the holiday spending as possible, but I guess the people who ran those facilities wanted to go home too. lol
That said, the free area was still huge. So large that people tend to rent bikes of all varieties to ride around it. On a nice sunny day, the views are gorgeous. Pictures say it all so I won't waffle about it.
Another point to note is that there's a village (maybe more than one) inside the park. Depending on which entrance you take to the park, you might end up walking through it to get to the scenic parts of the lake. The village itself looks pretty rundown, dusty and not what you'd expect of a scenic park, but curiously, they are doing a roaring business in traditional Chinese rural feasts. (农家乐) The locals seem to love it. There's literally queues of fancy cars from the big cities lining up to eat at a village that would not look out of place from China of 30 years ago. I guess it's the nostalgia and authenticity people are looking for? Personally I prefer a nicer environment, so I cannot tell you how good the food might be.

I and my wife spent a day in this beautiful park. We hired a cycle and went round the lake along the bicycle circuit in 3 and a half hours. There are a few food stalls on the way and the charges are very reasonable. As with most public parks this one is also clean and well maintained with a places where you can relax and while away time when pedaling becomes too monotonous. it gets a little crowded on weekends but with a big bustling city adjoining it that is only to be expected.

I went for a business trip for two weeks with a weekend in between to get around and see the place. The fact that I could not visit Hong Kong for leisure trip during the weekend disappointed me. But, the visit to this lake gave all the memories I could make from my trip. Despite the fact that it was kind of hot and sunny (max temperature of 27 and minimum probably 18) as the the time I visited was during 3rd and 4th weeks of November, I still could enjoy. So, the best thing is you can rent different kinds of bikes, even motor bikes near the lake entrance. But, if you are aware enough of the surroundings, there are guys offering free parking for the car which is monitored by themselves if you rent bikes from them. There is about 20km and so that you can ride on the bike around the lake. The lake is very beautiful and the surroundings are filled with plants and different big trees. So, you will keep passing through the cool shade provided by those big trees. On the roads inside, the four wheeler is banned, so going on bike pretty safe. There are toilets available fairly across the whole perimeter. The best part on the way is the fresh food. You can get fresh fruits and root vegetables like pineapple, carrot, sweet potato and banana. The street was good. I could happily enjoy the Paratha stuffed with omelette. It was tasty for Indian taste buds. You can variety of noodles as well like rice noodles, potato and glass noodles. If you want to have fresh bananas, make sure you try there coz all those fruits and vegetables are cultivated next to lake using the water. You won't believe my words about the food until you taste that by yourself, it is that great. The rent for a normal bike is about 2 pounds. I am not sure about the small motor bikes. Very relaxing and pretty location. There is water skiing as well, I don't know about the price as I don't know how to swim.
The Huawei factory in the lake premises is so big and attractive. The buildings look like they are of European style. There are some under construction buildings and so it coudl be dusty at some places. You might want to take the nose mask. Take a hat with you to avoid suntan on the face.

This is the perfect place to spend a day hiking or biking. There are miles of paved trails all around the park. It is a great place to escape the hectic and sometimes chaotic city. The air is exceptionally fresh due to the giant lake and surrounding trees. My family loves to walk around and enjoy the scenery.

Beautiful park and evening views. We enjoyed the park, its sculptures, lake views, the city lights on the other side of the lake, and the high oxygen content fresh air.

I would like to know from an expat perhaps living in Dong Gian if they could tell me anything about a circus troupe with lots of animals (tigers and penguins) staying at a complex next to the Waterside Hotel which is located adjacent to the Science and Technology Park. I saw some incredible things looking out my back windows....the hotel says they don't exist! And my friends here and in China now think I am insane! Help!
