I'd just like to flesh out the description of the route from Oncheonjang Metro to the Temple, via the Cable Car and the South Gate, as it can be quite confusing.
From Oncheonjang Metro, exit on the west side, turn left (south) and walk to the next crossing of the main highway. Cross the highway and continue west up Geumganggongwon-ro. When you get to Geumgang Park, turn right and the park entrance is on your left. Walk in and follow the signs to the Cable Car station.
You can buy a single or a return ticket. If you are going to walk to Seokbulsa, you probably won’t want to return this way! (And don't forget the cable car is closed on Mondays).
When you get off the cable car at the top, follow the signs for the South Gate. Walk for about 2km. Keep to the well-trodden path. When you get to the gate, don’t go through (unless you want a quick look around). Instead, turn left and back on yourself and you’ll see a sign to the temple. Follow the path downhill for around 500m to the South Gate village. Basically it’s a shanty town of shacks and awnings. Then it’s a bit tricky. There is only one sign for Seokbulsa in the village. Once you have passed that, keep going in a straight line. The path will start to narrow. When you get to the first tennis court, turn right. The path is now quite narrow. Walk past more tennis courts but don’t be tempted to go into any of them. Stick to the path between them. As others have said, this the most difficult part of the walk, a couple of kms through the forest, mostly downhill, with a lot of rock-hopping. You need to be fairly fit and have good footwear. It’s not in great condition. Don’t be tempted to veer off course, just follow the stream downhill.
Finally you emerge on the hardtop road which is the main vehicle access to the temple. Turn right and start uphill. It’s a tough, 1km walk, zigzagging uphill, but at least the surface is much better than the path!
In total it took me about 1hr 45mins from Cable car to Temple.
When you've finished your visit, I’d recommend heading for Mandeok Metro station. Follow the hardtop road all the way down the hill until you get to the bus stop at Byeongpungsa Temple Entrance, then get the bus just one stop to Mandeok Metro. I’d recommend the bus because the pavements here are not safely separated from the highway.

Настоящий оазис уединения и спокойствия рядом с портовым курортом. Немного затруднительным может показаться подъём, но по дороге множество красивых остановок для отдыха

As many of the other reviewers have said, this is quite different from the usual Korean temples and the temple itself is really only the start. I won’t dwell too much on the temple itself - more on getting here - as most of the other reviewers appear to have access to a car or came by taxi. I had read that you could also access the temple via the Geumgang Park Cable Car. I read one travel blogger who said that the walk from the top of the cable car was an easy 20-30 min amble through the forest. Either he was:
A) lost and went to the wrong temple
B) runs up Everest in his spare time
C) had made up some alternative facts.
It took us around 1.5 hours- we weren’t going particularly fast, but there was no way it would take 20 mins.

Turn right and walk past the tennis courts, and then walk a couple of kms through the forest, mostly downhill, until finally you plop out on the road. Then the hard bit starts- 600m climb up the road, but I promise you / it is worth it!

I like to think of myself as a seasoned traveler of Korea after having visited most of the country and seen most of the highlights. I will say that Seokbulsa Temple in the northeastern part of Busan is in my opinion the pretties temple in Korea. It is situated along the cliffside in a more remote part of the city. Sure, there will be plenty of tourists and individuals wanting to take photos (especially during the peak season), but I think it is worth it! If you are traveling to Busan, I definitely recommend including this on your itinerary.

Unusual stone carvings of Lord Buddha on the rock face here. They're not that old as they only date from the 1930's. I guess this is what some monk decided to do during the Great Depression. Definitely well worth making the trip to see it although I found it a little hard to orient myself to Google Maps after I got out of the Subway at Mandeok Station. I don't know if it's my age or the app or probably a combination of both. I took a cab to the trail leading to temple. The driver was kind but ain't they all? It was a nice walk back down to the station and there is a trail part of the way.

Best thing we saw in Busan. Combine with the Geumjeongsanseong fortress South Gate if you want, also worthwhile. This is quite an uphill hike but worth it.

We arrived via subway (Oncheonjang Station) and up the cable car; we followed internet directions to reach the South gate, after that we got lost.
The fact that it was raining on and off and the few signs didn’t help us. After a while we went through a little village (main dish they offered was duck bulgogi) and afterwards down (bridge/little river/rocks) and up (steep part). After hiking for 5+ hours through the mountain we finally reached Seokbulsa temple and it was worth it!
It started raining again; there was only a couple walking around and soon we had the place all to ourselves.
We have seen several temples, but got to admit the wall carvings are truly unique.
We were thankful for 2 things: the drink vending machine a little before reaching the temple and for not slipping down the rocks along the way and being hurt.
Arriving through the road (not the cable car) there are taxis that can save you around three fourths of the steep ascent, but missed one going the opposite way so had to walk down and had some food mid-way at a nice looking café.
Once we reached the bottom since we arrived from a different place and there was no subway around we asked a guy waiting for the bus and told us to cross the street and take the bus; we did and arrived at Minam subway station to change to line 4.
I enjoyed the hiking, but my teenage son hated it. My body hurt the next day, but I was still smiling.

We left the Busan Tower area at 7:15 am and were back by 11 am - an easy half-day activity. Not sure why everyone says it‘s so hard to get to. We took subway line 1 to Dondae, then took bus 46. Just put Seokbulsa in Kakao Map, and this is the path it shows. The bus drops you off right at the 1.5 km path through woods and onto a sort of street to the temple. It took us 30 min. from there. The last 500m were the steepest. English and Korean signs all the way up. And it seems you could drive/get a taxi up if you really needed to.
There were only 2 others there when we arrived. It was so peaceful and beautiful - the rock carvings, the views... a true highlight on our Busan trip.
We were too early for the cable car on the way out. Thought we could take the cable car down, but the signage to find that path from the temple was questionable, so just took the same path back down. Would suggest going up with the cable car and back down toward Mandeok to the 46 bus. There are plenty of signs down.

This temple was the highlight of our Busan visit. You can reach after taking the Geumgang Cable Car, but there is also a bus stop not to far away from the temple. We took the cable car and had a hard time finding the temple. We had to ask for directions, but luckily found a very friendly Korean gentleman who showed us the way. The walk to the temple was not easy, so you'll need to be in shape.
But when you reach this temple everything is forgotten. The view on Busan is breath taking, but what makes this temple truly unforgettable are the magnificent rock carvings. What a tremendous feat!

Unfortunately we don’t have a car, so we’re wondering if the bus (one of the reviewers said there is a bus stop close by) or the cable car would be the best way to get there? If it’s the bus - does anyone know the number (several alternatives on google maps- but none seem that close). Thanks!
How close to the temple can you get by car?

There is parking within about 5-10 minutes from the main entrance. My friends and I parked farther away and enjoyed the hike. We parked at the coffee shop on the left going up the mountain. It was good coffee also with a great view of Busan. I hope you enjoy the temple.
Hi How long is the way down ? Thanks

Hi,
'Just read your review. Wondering about temples in the Busan area. Did you visit any other temples and how would you rate this one in comparison? We are looking for off the beaten path plus ancient architecture and spiritual ethos.

You should check out Haedong Yonggungsa (해동용궁사) Temple if you have time! It's a gorgeous large temple by the sea. I was actually more impressed with this temple than I was by Seokbulsa but since it is more popular there are more people here and it may feel a bit hectic.
If I remember correctly it takes about an hour from Haeundae Beach, there should be bus numbers you can google.
