The trail is 2rd forest and last 3rd open with great views. not particularly difficult but long. Take your own water supply.
Be careful, this hike requires planning ahead : the number of visitors per day is limited, you need to book access online (for free).
Access booking does not guarantee a parking spot, which is very small, so you are likely to be sent to an alternative parking 15km away, and will need to take a bus back to the start.
You easily loose 1 hour, which can be critical to be at the last shelter on time.
On busy days either come as early as opening time, or come via public transport/ taxi. I personally find this a pity that they build huge - useless - shelters on the trail, but cannot make a descent parking lot at the start...

Hotel Skypark Jeju 1, which provides the most optimized service for visitors to Hallasan in Jeju Island, operates a package that includes round-trip shuttle service, equipment rental, and snacks. The service here is top-notch and top-notch.

I really enjoyed the moments of solitude in the mountain with very fresh air and cool early December breeze. The feeling of standing above the clouds is great. But the summit is windy and cold.
Brought 2 litres of water, but not enough food, as long as you persevere, you can reached the summit if you start early. I strained my groin muscles midway through the rocky section and developed cramps after the second rest station, but have enough rest on the route up and pace yourself, nothing can stop you. I fell twice on the way down as that's when I felt the knee are wobbly. In short, pace yourself based on your fitness, no need to rush, every little steps count.

It took my partner three trips to be able to reach the summit because of weather issues. I lucked out and was able to get up first trip! If you are visiting Jeju and are in basic physical shape (or better), I would absolutely recommend planning a hike.
The hike will take the better part of the day and you'll need to secure a permit in advance. Don't forget to pack a lunch and plenty of water. There are easier portions of the hike towards the beginning and a few stops along the way. While the toughest part is not at the top, be prepared to wait if you want a photo by the summit sign and of the crater.

It was funny to read in the 1960s-70s HallaSan had tadpoles in the crater-lake!
Now, climate warming has dried up a good part of the lake—still there—as well as spruce trees at the summit. We climbed it but underestimated Halla Mountain peak, where Baengnokdam Lake is 2,000 metres high (1/4 the height of Mount Everest). Of course, its unique biodiversity could be seen with birds, butterflies among the Sasa Borealis, hidden pangolins, and chipmunks. We arrived close to 8:30 and returned around 5:30 on the harder Gwaneumsa trail, but Seongpanak also has both coastal and polar varieties of foliage—transitioning from tropical plants, pine and giant temperate cedars to Jeju spruce and maples. Pre-registering is a “must” (5:30-10:00 a.m.) for free limited ‘spots’ on Gwaneumsa and Seongpanak at visithalla.jeju. go.kr; we climbed 6,745 manmade stairs during ascent on the former. The first 1,500-1600 did not seem bad; but increasingly the gradient of more than 20% made the Gwaneumsa stairs steep (without a hand rail). Seongpanak has a gentle incline so most people would prefer it. It’s also a better idea to register with friends and swap places: a couple or trio going up one path to the peak; and switch with another ascending in the other direction or path to descend along a different route.
This time in August was a good time of year to hike, as the stairs and long ramps were dry. The 18-km route (return) is deceiving with only two toilets on the mountain—2 km to the next at the real check-in Center or “shelter.” (The warden there turned away a French couple from the shelter 4-5 km toward the top for arriving 5 minutes after the cut-off time of 1:00 to block latecomers from attempting the peak trail.) The remaining 5,655 stairs would become the hardest anyway; but safety and not getting caught in the dark is the park’s concern.
Those Jeju grandmas and grandpas motored up/down the Gwaneumsa path, though, before the young adults and city-stragglers. Some even had tents as their base camp along Gwaneumsa.
It appears the Jeju tradition of climbing sacred mountains 1-4 times daily has kept locals in “peak” shape. I suppose it’s better for the average tourist to simply stick to the easier route…or share both!

Climbed the Seongpanak trail (9.7 km) going up, which took us 4 hours and 47 minutes 😁 including rest and photobreak... This trail is longer than Gwaneumsa trail.. Started with a kinda "walk-in-the-park" trail in the forest for few kilometers.. We saw wild deer and crows.. Then, the trail became challenging and more difficult towards the peak.. Unfortunately when we reached the peak, it had very low visibility and was very windy... We were not able to see the crater 😞 because it was covered with thick fog/cloud...

Seongpanak Trail is about 9.7 km to and from the parking lot. Few kilometers from the summit was easy with boardwalk paths and steps. There was a three kilometer stretch of snow covered trails that made the descent quite stressful though. Once the snow covered area was cleared, it was a long but relatively flat walk rest of the way which my knees were thankful for.

Hi LG_Kay,
May I know how long you took to hike up and down?
Could you advice how you descend via the Sexxxx trail?
Thank you in advance.

Hello there,
Read about the bus 781 to go seongpanak from city....but how to go back? using the same 781 bus? and what time is the last bus available?
Is there ANY route at all that connects the summit trails to the Western trails? Like Gwaneumsa to Eorimok; maybe Seongpanak to Donnaeko or Yeongsil. I read, from other sources, that the 1.3Km connecting trail at the top is closed now. Is there any other connecting route?

If I remember correctly, it was open at the time of my visit in May 17. Better to Google for Hallasan National Park and contact them by email.

We have climbed before, but our hotel was quite far away. We are trying to find the closest hotel to this trail. Any input?
