This was a branch office for the Edo government from 1692 to 1868, and the only site in Japan of a provincial office where the main building remains. It also housed a legal court and an interrogation room (with torturous methods), as well as being the official residence of the governors/magistrates.
The rooms have been recreated beautifully and the signage explains a bit about the customs. In addition, a rice granary -- the oldest and largest from the Edo period) -- offers insight into how taxes were paid in rice.
All very interesting and worth the time to walk through.

Fantastic experience on governor housing. It is very educational and could be boring to some. Enjoy the little garden. Quite a historical moment.

C’est une très grande propriété qui est très bien entretenue. La visite guidée était très intéressante. Ce qui m’a surpris le plus était la présence d’une chambre de tortures dans cet ancien édifice gouvernemental.

Vai ter que tirar o sapato… eles dão um saquinho para carregar o sapato… como estava frio (8oC), levei uma meia grossa, mas mesmo assim: meio frio…São 440 yens e você segue as setas; interessante visitar um prédio público japonês antigo (tem jardim, área de grandes reuniões, armazenamento de impostos = arroz, banheiro e até área de “tortura “). Na frente do prédio, de manhã, tinha uma feirinha.

We arrived here on a Tuesday and learned many of restaurants and stores are closed Tuesday and Wednesday because they are open weekends. So watch your timing.
The town has some very pretty photo-op views and a preserved street or two. We really thought it was special, until we visited the next stop on our itinerary, Shirakawago (see my review), an hour away by bus.
That said, there are interesting things to see, especially the storehouses that hold incredibly intricate and beautiful floats wheeled out for the spring and fall festivals.
For us, the hi-light was a hands-on lesson in woodworking using hand tools to fashion a ladel of magnolia wood. (see separate review and photos).

Interesting historical place for Japanese. A quick walk thru within the building however not sure if it is worth a visit as there was not much to see.

We were surprised how interesting we found this building. We spent around an hour there and found it enjoyable. There were QR codes with explanations of various items. Also loved seeing the torture area and the loos!! The rice building area was closed off for repairs.

昭和44年まで約300年間，役所として使われた施設跡です。時代劇の中でお馴染みのお白洲や大広間、茶室や拷問道具等がそのまま見ることができ、また真向兎という釘の頭を隠す装飾品等や庭園他建物としての見所も多いところでした。コロナ禍での人数制限により、静かに見学できたのも良かったです。

立派な門構えの陣屋です。広い敷地に江戸時代からの建物と再建された建物、大きな蔵（再建途中）、美しい中庭があり、とても見ごたえがあります。
江戸時代からの大広間や吟味所、御白洲、再建された生活空間や町役人の詰め所、別棟の大きな蔵は資料が展示されています。
これで入場料４４０円は格安です！
１０月下旬でよい天気でしたが、さすがに後半は足が冷たくなりました。
