We were here in a snowy winter and it was beautiful. Obviously the experience in different from other seasons so you do need decent, appropriate footwear and clothing.
Stunning views, a photographer's paradise.
Ice drifts along the lake edge and ice crystals hanging from the trees make the area very atmospheric.

This is a beautiful lake we had a room overlooking it. Try out the lake Akan cruise to the island in the middle to check out some moss balls

We visited on the regular sightseeing bus White Pirika. This is my first time in winter. It's so icy you can't tell if it's a lake anywhere. Cars are pretty much parked on the ice and there are a lot of tents for smelt fishing. Quite a few people are coming. It's slippery, so be careful when walking though. Not all of the lakes turn into ice, but I was surprised to see that it is completely different from Lake Akan in summer.

I've wanted to visit this lake for many years, which is home to a special natural monument, Marimo.
Around the lake there are Speciality Lodging and shops because it is a hot spring resort
Even in the morning, it was crowded with many people.
Although the color of the lake surface was dark green due to cloudy (fog) on the day of visit
If you look near the lake by boat, you can get a good view of the trees that have dived on the lake surface.
I felt the transparency typical of a freshwater lake.
I was surprised to hear that Lake Akan is a much larger lake than I had imagined and freezes over completely in winter.
Is it like Lake Suwa?
Don't miss Churui Island, which has a Marimo exhibition room and stops by on a pleasure boat.
I also learned a lot about the existence of Lake Koakan for the first time.

The enchanting Lake Akan (阿寒湖, Akanko) is one of the several attractions that we visited in our 10-day Hokkaido self-drive vacation. Similar to Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashū in the Akan Mashū National Park, Lake Akan is a caldera lake formed by water filling the caldera, the latter depression is created from the inward collapse of the empty magma chamber roof of the erupted volcano thousands of years ago with the exception that, according to sources, its elongated “T” shape is due to several cumulative volcanic eruptions (and resultant inward collapse) in its history, resulting in the several volcanic cones in which 4 of them appear as islands of Oshima, Kojima, Yaitaijima and Churuijima above the lake. Lake Akan has an approximate area of 13 square kilometres, a 26-kilometre shoreline and is ranked as the 11th largest lake in Hokkaido. It is 420 metres above sea level and its deepest point is 45 metres. There is a cluster of stratovolcanoes surrounding Lake Akan including Mount Me-Akan or Meakan (Meakandake) at 1499 metres (highest), Mount Akan-Fuji (Akanfujidake) at 1,476m, Mount O-Akan or Oakan (Oakandake) at 1370 metres and Mount Fuppushi (Fuppushidake) at 1225 metres. Mount Akan-Fuji is one of the many symmetrical volcanoes that is named after the famous Mount Fuji. According to Ainu legend, Mount Oakan (雄阿寒岳) is named "Pinneshiri" (meaning "man's mountain") and Mount Meakan (雌阿寒岳) is named "Machineshiri" (meaning "woman's mountain") because Mount Me-Akan is “hotter”. Incidentally, Mount Meakan is designated as one of the "Nihon Hyakumeizan" or the One Hundred Famous Mountains of Japan (a 1964 publication by mountaineer author Kyūya Fukada).
I see there are two ways to enjoy Lake Akan. The first is a panoramic view of the lake at two observatories or lookout points - drive about 5 minutes from hot spring resort town Akanko Onsen to Kokusetsu Akankohan Ski Area, park your car and look for a signboard stand that has two signboards one for “0.5km Akan Lakeside Observatory” and the other for “Mt Hakuto-zan Observatory 2km”. Reaching Lake Akan Observatory at an altitude of some 530 metres above sea level takes about 15 minutes of one way walking up the clear mountain trail while it is about 1 to 1.5 hour of one way walking (depending on your fitness) to reach the near-to-summit Mount Hakato Observatory (Mount Hakato or Hakutozan or Hakutosan is about 950 metres tall).
Unlike the Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashū, the second way is to take a cruise on the lake, which is what my family and I did onboard the “Akan Kankoukisen” cruise boat or ship that departed at 1:05pm on a sunny and windless weekday afternoon.
Getting there: You could get to the hot spring resort town Akanko Onsen (where the cruise boat departs from) by car from Tancho Kushiro Airport in about 1 hour and half and from Abashiri and Kushiro in about 2 hours. We drove our rental car to the cruise centre from Kussharo Prince Hotel directed by Apple Map or Google Map on the Apple Car Play. Alternatively, you could take one of the few daily buses operated by Akan Bus between Kushiro Station and Lake Akan that costs ¥2750 one way and takes about 110 minutes. We parked our car in unmarked and free parking lots next to the cruise pier and along Hotel Gozensui. We visited the shops (mainly souvenir shops) around the pier before the arrival of the boat.
The cruise boat: The “Akan Kankoukisen” cruise boat departs from the Koun-no-Mori Pier at Akanko Onsen at the following times between mid-April to late October - 08:05, 09:05, 10:05, 11:05, 13:05, 14:05, 15:05 and 16:05. The duration of the entire cruise is 75 minutes. Between late October and end November, it is best to check the Akan Sightseeing Cruise Company website for the departure timings due to reduced frequency. When we were there in September 2023, the cruise ticket cost ¥2000 for adults, ¥1830 for secondary school children and ¥1040 for primary school children but since March 2024, it has been revised to ¥2400 for adults and ¥1240 for children on its website. The large boat that we boarded has painted pictures of cute animals. It has two levels; each level comes with open deck at the back of the boat and an enclosed deck with windows and benches. The boat moves at a comfortable speed that did not pose any safety risks to the passengers.
The Lake attraction: Even before we board the ship and standing at the car park, we were already astounded and enchanted by the view in front of us of Lake Akan and the imposing Mount Oakan (on the right). Lake Akan has this really beautiful blue colour which upon my research on the internet is closest to medium sapphire blue. The cruise boat takes the following route: turn right past Kojima and Oshima islands to the Takiguchi area -> U-turn and past Oshima island along the eastern lake shore -> stop over at the Marimo Exhibit and Observation Centre at Churuijima (Churui Island) for 15 minutes -> return to Koun-no-Mori Pier past Yaitaijima (Yaitai Island).
Throughout the cruise, I was at the second level (upper) open deck area at the back of the boat as I could see more scenery, move around freely with no benches and windows (unlike the enclosed deck) and select the best angle and spot to take my photographs. Furthermore, if there was any wind that was generated by the cruise boat, the former was sheltered by the enclosed deck in the front. I enjoyed the following experience:
(1) The approximate 18-kilometre cruise on Lake Akan taking about 85 minutes (including 15 minutes stopover at Churui Island's Marimo Exhibit and Observation Centre) was really relaxing
(2) Ravishing the sight of the ever imposing 1370-metre tall Mount Oakan (with 3 explosion craters at the top) as we cruise past it - the boat was only about 5 kilometres away from the mountain! Mount Oakan was cloudless at its top on the return journey which enhanced and revealed its majesty even more.
(3) Moving away from and coming back towards the Koun-no-Mori Pier always with the background or backdrop of immovable trio of Mount Hakato, Mount Meakan and Mount Fuppushi (what a contrast). With the sun shining at the back of the trio of mountains, the latter appeared black.
(4) The closeness to the untouched forest, wildflowers and turquoise water at the Takiguchi area
(5) The visit to the Marimo Exhibition and Observation Centre on Churui Island to see up close in an underwater viewing area the famous yet extraordinary Marimo (Aegagropila linnaei) that was first discovered in Lake Akan in 1897 by the botanist (Mr) Tatsuhiko Kawakami and to learn about its ecology. Marimo is not your typical algae – it is a green algae ball or sphere that can only be found in a few places in the world but none of these places has the favourable environment at the bottom of Churui Bay and Kinetanpe Bay in Lake Akan that enables the growth of Marimo to become the largest in the world, around 20–30 centimetres (8–12 inches). I have never seen a form of Mother Nature growing in a ball until now! You really have to see it up close and personal at this enchanting yet mysterious spherical green algae ball! Marimo was so special that in 1921 it was designated as a natural monument of Japan, and later in 1952 was designated as a special natural treasure.
With such gorgeous scenery of enchanting Lake Akan and the towering majestic volcanic mountains and of course the rare opportunity to see the rare Marimo, you could do no wrong in taking the boat cruise with Akan Sightseeing Cruise on Lake Akan. In fact, the boat cruise has something for every season, for example the one-week "icebreaking cruise" in late April to herald the arrival of spring and enjoying the burst of red, orange, yellow foliage colours of the forest at the lake during autumn. Even without taking the cruise, you could enjoy a mystical natural phenomenon in Lake Akan in winter - "frost flowers," – in which the water vapour evaporates from ice and then cools and condenses into frost crystals which grow into a “blooming flower”.

We had 2 hours of free time after getting off the tour bus. I walked around Lake Akan Onsen town, and there were quite a few customers. The sightseeing boat dock was quite crowded. I got the impression that there were many nice hotels. I thought it would be nice to stay at Lake Akan Onsen and relax.

I visited Lake Akan to see the marimo.
The sightseeing boat dock was right in front of the hotel where I was staying, so it was easy to get around.
The sightseeing boat costs 2,000 yen per adult (1,040 yen for children) and takes about 80 minutes to go around.
The scenery was so beautiful that the 80 minutes flew by.
On the way, we got off the boat at a facility that protects marimo and got to see some wild marimo face to face. I was surprised at how big they were, way bigger than I expected.
It would be a real shame to come all the way to Lake Akan and not take a sightseeing boat.
I think the 2,000 yen boat fare is worth paying.

I took a 75-minute cruise on Lake Akan. The highlight was a visit to an island which has a Marimo Exhibition Center. Marimo is a rare green algae comprising numerous filaments that clump together to form a spherical shape.

Can anyone advise on any website for the bus form Sounkyo to Lake Akan. I checked the bus details ( like Akan bus) but the date is not updated as 2019, not sure if the timing is still the same and how do we make reservation. Plan to travel

こんにちは 1月に阿寒湖に行きたいのですが 空港から公共機関でアクセスできますか?
東京からですので空港は問いません。
Đã viết vào 15 tháng 9, 2015

Hi. I plan to make Kushiro as my base since I am coming by public transportation.
I would like to ask if anyone here has used the Pirka Gou trip by Akan bus.
Included in the trip is Lake Akan, I was wondering if the tourist is given the chance to do the Lake Akan cruise aboard that sightseeing bus tour.
Thanks.
