Not sure which feature is more amazing at this popular site--the ornate temples, or the soaring trees that tower over everything.
Nikko can be done as a day trip from Tokyo; but, to savor the town's atmosphere consider overnighting in a ryokan (Japanese spa).

My 97-year-old father insisted on going, so I knew it was crowded, but I went there in a wheelchair, and I felt very sad because it was so unkind. People in wheelchairs can enter through the second gate, but it is locked and they can't open it unless they go and tell the guards. The guard's grumpy attitude makes you wonder what he's mad at. Why do I have to lock the door to begin with?
If you can't use a wheelchair, put it on the website in advance.

Beautiful place for sure, very interesting buildings and in the middle of a giant forest. However they could do with a max capacity, it was busy to the point of non enjoyable at some points

I have to climb a long flight of stairs to get to Tokugawa Ieyasu's grave, but a woman who is too tired to climb the stairs and resting says, "Are you going to climb!? Don't you climb up there?" 'Oh, my God!' a staff member heard loudly. The other staff are also basic tips. I was about to enter the ceiling where the dragon was written, and the staff said, "You have a ticket, don't you?" "I have it!" he said with a smirk as he searched for it, not knowing which ticket. There was no explanation that the tickets were stubs and the staff had a bad attitude. Nikko Toshogu Shrine itself wants to go, but the presence of staff makes it difficult to go.

Bought the tickets for my group member, the ticket lady showed me the total amount I had to pay, by my mistake I handed not enough, if only she could politely tell me how much was not enough my experience would be great today, but instead with no smile and just showed the calculator was confusing, above all she asked me to count the ticket (which quite hard to do with dry hand in winter) was not easy and at the end she said I didn’t think you can’t even do that (both in counting the amount of money and the number of tickets) sound very insulting for me

If I had to rate my top attractions in Japan, this would probably be in the top five, perhaps even top. So many beautiful buildings on one site, unbelievably artistic and complex carvings wherever one looks. Too crowded, but this is unavoidable as everyone wants to visit this amazing site.

It is an unmissable place for sightseeing in Nikko. There are wonderful Yangming Gate, Three Monkeys, Sleeping Cat, etc.
And in Toshogu Shrine, there are places where some secrets are hidden. It's fun to look for it.

Definitely the most beautiful sanctuary we visited in Japan. A must.
Nestled in the heart of a green setting, the place is beautiful.
Obviously it is very busy and it is recommended to go very early, but it did not spoil our visit.

I haven't been on a school trip since elementary school♪
Last year, during the autumn foliage season, we abandoned our visit because we couldn't even get to the parking lot due to the super heavy traffic.
This year, it was revenge.
Still, it took me two hours to get to the parking lot after getting stuck in traffic.
Another long line forms along the approach.
As I observed what was going on, it was a line to buy tickets at the ticket machine.
We had no choice but to queue up and finally get tickets to see the show.
The security officer explained on the microphone that if you buy your tickets online in advance, you don’t have to wait in line, but there is no explanation on the official Nikko Toshogu website, which is extremely unkind.
Also, due to the influence of inbound traffic, a very large number of people in the area were using their smartphones intensively, and the mobile signal was not connected.
And then ... when you enter the compound, every facility is right-of-way, and the aforementioned inbound traffic is also a factor, line after line.
I was sick and tired.
We stood in line several times as long as the facility was open.
The fact that we have such a large number of visitors means that we receive a reasonable amount of admission fee, so we would like the management to think about how to better route the museum by improving the premises.

As of November 3rd, the autumn colors are still there. When you go to the entrance there is a line of people. I was waiting in line to buy a ticket. It is always necessary to purchase in advance. It also closes at 4pm, so you have to consider the traffic before you know what you're doing. All the roads, a few kilometers around, are congested, so it's better to think that a few kilometers take half a day. Families (especially those with small children) should choose the larger road with convenience stores etc. in the same traffic.

Hello, I will be in Tokyo from December 28, 2018 - January 1, 2019 and I plan to make a quick day trip to Nikko Prefecture and see the Tosho-gu shrine.. I read that lots of people will be going home to their provinces at this time and the trains are packed! What date would you recommend I visit?

9:30am to 16:30pm availability to use the elevator but it is getting dark early so I recommend you go there earlier the better to see the dinamic fall.

There is a pilgrimage aspect to Nikko. And the site is spread out over moderately steep hillsides.
Naturally, much depends on the amount of time you want to devote to each element (there is not just one shrine, but a complex of buildings, and pathways leading secondary & smaller shrines, plus temples, the museum, etc). Other factors are crowds related to time of year, and day, etc. And weather, which also impacts crowds.
Strolling through, the core buildings of the main shrine? Less than a hour. But overall, budget at least a half day, more if you can afford it.
If you can budget two days, focus one upon a leisurely tour of the main sites, and another going up to Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and perhaps the Imperial Villa.

週末に東照宮や二荒山神社に行こうと思っているのですが、ガイドをお願いしてより詳しい話を聞きながら色々見れたらなと思っております。
そこでガイドを頼める会社などは何という会社なのでしょうか？いまいちネットで調べても出てきません。

東照宮はイヤホンガイド（1台５００円、ファミリーセットで３台１０００円）でも十分でした。
各堂内では宮司さんやお坊様が説明して下さいます（さいごにお守り購入の案内はご愛敬）ので、十分でした。
二荒山神社も良いけれど、是非大猷院（家光が祀られています）も行って見て下さい。本殿での説明でも「へぇ～そうなんだ」と思えるようなお話が聞けますよ。
ガイドさん無しでもゆっくり案内板を読みながらでも十分楽しめます。

It was easy to see both of these. We were there in April. The renovations seemed to be limited to the roof. I’d say the monkeys had already been renovated. The cat is very small and tucked away. Check out the reverse side too. Enjoy this fabulous temple. Lucky you.
