We were in Pantai Chenang and went to the night market there, wouldn't bother it was generally the same stuff as any shop along the street and believe most stalls would have been run by those shops. You can get as good a bargains anytime by just shopping along the street.

Since you are staying in Cenang, I would suggest you to go over the night market in Padang matsirat. All night markets begin their operations around 5.30pm, where the crowd usually comes in around 6.15-7.45pm. You can avoid the peak period since it only takes around 40 mins to visit every stall. After 9pm, most stalls will provide discount since they are going to close their stalls, and their foods could be not that good in quality. By the way, they won't open their stalls during the raining evening as stated in the previous reply by Jim T.
