Bako contains a rich variety of wildlife - including the endangered Proboscis Monkey - and a coastline covered with small bays, coves and beaches. While it’s relatively small (only 27 sq km) it is reputed to have almost every type of vegetation in Borneo within its boundaries.
It’s criss-crossed with a number of hiking trails ranging in difficulty from moderate to challenging. Be aware that hiking here requires a reasonable level of fitness, and lots of water, in order to manage the heat and humidity.
We took the advice of a number of bloggers and booked accommodation for one night (booking online is easy, but book early as there is limited availability).
Accommodations are simple (we stayed in a Type 4 Forest Lodge) but do the job. Our unit had air conditioning, ceiling fans and a private toilet and “shower”. Note: water pressure is almost non-existent in the shower, and there was no hot water, so a cold bucket and ladle shower had to suffice. Not a huge deal, though.
Staying overnight also affords you to take in the night tour, which we highly recommend. Out night tour didn’t reveal any large fauna (these things are always hit and miss), but we saw a remarkable variety of insects, arachnids, amphibians, lizards and snakes. It was great!
We also ensured that we arrived at the park early on the first day - around 9:00 a.m. - which allowed us to do some hiking both days (Note: getting there requires a boat trip, which costs RM200 round trip. If you can share the boat ride with others the cost per person goes down to as little as RM40 if you can get the five person maximum in your group).
We had a fabulous opportunity to see a troop of Proboscis Monkeys both days, including a very up-close and personal encounter with the Alpha male of the troop. We also had the good fortune to get great views of a couple different troops of Silvered Leaf Monkeys (aka: Silvery Languars), including three mothers carrying very young babies on their chests.
We highly recommend a visit to this amazing park.

The shuttle boat operators have set up their own version of the taxi mafia scam system that is present in some SE Asia locales. When I visited 7 years ago I November it was a simple system of buy your return ticket, get put on a boat and then take any boat at whatever time you want to return. Now the system is that you have to charter a boat, with a set return time, with the fee set at 100 MYR for 1-5 passengers and 200 MYR for 6-10 passengers ONE WAY, so double that for a return trip. This on top of the park admission fee. Now my experience was that five other people arrived and hired a boat together, “sorry there are 5 of us”, same story with the next group. Since I already visited 7 years ago, knowing the slim chance of seeing proboscis monkeys, I was not going to pay out 200 MYR to these thieves, I got the next bus back to Kuching which is only 1 MYR in comparison. Skip this place unless you absolutely want to have a slim chance seeing the Proboscis monkeys.

I enthusiastically booked 2 nights here in eager anticipation of seeing an abundance of unique Borneo wildlife. We left enthusiastic to leave the next day. The good: pretty jungle trails with beautiful trees, plants, and eventual overlooks; seeing bearded pigs and silver leaf monkeys up-close; a fabulous night tour that was our highlight here with good sightings of flying lemur, palm civet, green vipers, and lots of spiders and bugs.
The bad: accommodations aren't very clean, aren't very comfortable(though they have a/c), and don't provide towels or sheets; the only food options are at the cafeteria and was horrible; very few bird species and the probiscus monkeys only offered glimpses of their bizarre forms; pretty beaches but it's forbidden to go in the water and get refreshed from the very hot weather.
As I said in the title, it was(barely) worth a night to see the unique night creatures and bearded pigs we'd not seen in Sabah, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic place. Amazing views. You must take a boat and view the park from the sea. The best attraction.

*Take cash*
This in point 1. The boat station & park entrance only take cash. There is NO cash point/ ATM on site.
It will be a long way to go if you can’t actually pay for the boat across.
Our boat across actually took 6 adults & all the prices are fixed, so there is no hassle at the jetty.
When you land on the jetty the other end, we felt a bit lost. Poor signs & an unmanned desk. You have to walk to the right to the Office, which is a 10 min stroll.
There are numerous trails in all directions & it all depends how much time you have.
The trail maps give ZERO information on trek difficulty level. We completed 3 & each do have a degree of challenge & I’m sure others are harder.
Didn’t see the numbers of animals we were hoping for (3 pigs & 1 monkey)
We trekked the Santubong Nation Park the previous day enjoyed that more. That’s free & you don’t see another sole all day.

We arrived by boat and left our luggage in the locker room while we went for our first walk with our guide Alex ( who was excellent). We checked in at 2pm - we’d chosen a lodge with air conditioning. The lodge was spacious but very basic - strange , we thought, not to give you a top sheet, just an old cover (like a large towel). You need to take your own towels. Good to have a fridge but we had to unplug it to charge our phones as the other sockets didn’t work. Shame there’s a lot of plastic washed up that they don’t get rid of. The food was very ‘basic’ too - all lukewarm from a buffet. However, lovely walks and great to see the wildlife. You have to be sure footed on the walks - lots of roots along the paths but also boardwalks. Saw hairy pigs, flying lemur, 3 types of monkey, frogs, insects and wasn’t bitten by any mosquitoes!!

Great day trip! Don’t do an expensive organized Tour, just organise it yourself. Get a grab from the city (35rm) and go to the the registration Office. Get tickets for the boat (boat for 5 people is 100rm for 5pax, you can share the total with other travellers just wait till more arrive). Entrance to the park is 20 rm. Jetty was not crowded or anything it was very well organized. We decided to hire a Guide at the registration Office for 150 rm ( Guides have a small booth there where you can hire them).
Boat trip to the park was nice and we did a couple of hikes in the park. We saw alot of animals mainly Thanks to the Guide. He also explained alot about the local tree’s, wildlife etc. Totally worth the price.
There is a small restaurant in the park where you can get lunch, drinks and use the toilet. Don’t expect too much, it’s basic.
In the afternoon we hiked to a different beach Where the boat picked us up to go to the sea stack rock. We were the only boat there and took some nice pictures. The boat took us back to the restaurant area (this extra trip costed 25rm per person). After this we returned to the registration office. Tried to get a grab back to the city but grab wouldn’t come out here for the return trip. One of the locals hanging around the Office drove us back for 50rm.

We had a wonderful guide, “Muhammad”, at Baku National Park in late December 2022. He’s an older gentleman who normally fishes, but he was a great guide. We don’t know his last name. We were “assigned” to him at the Government Boat Dock in the mainland to guide us on Baku.
I’m not sure how to get him as your guide. Maybe contact him at his WhatsApp number: +60 17-828 3508???

grazie

You can arrange with local rangers stationed at bako. I went for a night hike. Without them i would not have been able to see the noctunal amphibians and insects.
