The Portuguese city of El Jadida is a fascinating place, full of history and culture, but unfortunately left abandoned (in view of its maintenance and improvement) by the authorities and its inhabitants. This heritage, although classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, deserves a management worthy of a regional and national heritage, and a much more ambitious presentation.
Every time I visited, I was struck by the incredible potential of this site. The remains testify to a rich past, but the tourist experience is tarnished by a series of problems:
The Portuguese cistern, one of the flagship monuments, has been closed for renovation for more than two years, with no visibility of its reopening.
– The theatre (former Portuguese church), another architectural treasure, was closed on a Sunday, depriving visitors of essential access.
Cleaning services seem to be absent, adding a feeling of widespread neglect.
The old houses, yet magnificent witnesses of the architecture of the time, are left abandoned, accentuating the feeling of dilapidation.
Worse still, illegal constructions (you just have to lift your head to see the extentions of floors) distort the harmonious and historic urbanism of this city, distorting its unique character.
These shortcomings are all the more regrettable as the city could become a real socio-cultural and economic engine for El Jadida. Initiatives could be put in place to restore and animate this site: festivals, exhibitions, interactive guided tours... The possibilities are endless to revive it and attract more visitors.
Despite these challenges, I highly recommend visiting the Portuguese City. It is worth a visit and arouses ambivalent feelings: wonder at its beauty, but also frustration at its current state.
It is urgent to save this exceptional heritage and make it a source of pride for the region and the country. Restoring old houses, controlling illegal construction, and putting in place a real preservation and promotion strategy are imperative.

I've been hearing about El Jadida for a long time for seaside and tourism. We stayed there 1 day and it was more than enough. Just out of the toll booth, we are greeted by the police on a 4-lane because we were driving at 90 km. Real trap for 80% of motorists, it looked like a tax disguised to pay on the spot in cash otherwise they withhold your license. Thank you for the welcome. Then a dirty city everywhere streets beaches. Its inhabitants lack education and throw their trash everywhere. The rental was just average compared to the reviews (no air conditioning, water heater to troubleshoot, ..) with a property owner who harassed us once we left to put an excellent Rating on Booking.

The Portuguese City and the ramparts were dirty, full of garbage, and had not been restored for a long time. The tank was closed indefinitely due to a security risk. The smell of rotting waste in the city and the poor quality of accommodation and restaurants made us bitterly regret choosing to stop in El Jadida. As for the beach, it’s crowded, full of garbage and it’s very awkward to get in a Western swimsuit.

El Jadida resembles, in a small way, the much more famous Essaouira.
The two cities have a similar history in common: both had their heyday under the Portuguese, who remained here for almost three centuries (from the beginning of the 16th to the end of the 18th century).
El Jadida also presents itself as a fortified city (the walk on the ramparts is pleasant, although not comparable to the other).
In addition to the walls, there are also the cistern and a church, now used for other purposes.
Finally, another point that unites them is the presence, until the 1950s, of a Jewish community that allowed a strong development of the city.
The village is really small, the souk almost non-existent and, above all, without particularity, it is still nice to walk in its alleys, all in all quite clean.
For those who go to Casablanca is certainly an interesting stop, of which we recommend the visit

The Portuguese city is a stunning walled town next to the port. It's possible to walk up to the ramparts for a wander and to see great views.

We were looking forward to our visit of El Jadida, however we left the next day after our arrival. The city is full of garbage everywhere, it smells terrible in large areas of the city, even on what could have been nice spots. On top, the old Portuguese buildings and even the walls of the citadel are in deplorable state. It’s unpleasant to walk around. It’s so sad, because it’s such a contrast with other cities in Morocco and the rest of Morocco. One wonders what has gone wrong in this city.

Unique atmosphere in this city, a jewel of 16th century military architecture. It was called Mazagan but was renamed El Jadida in 1815. Its fortified walls and imposing bastions overlook the ocean characterized by the influences of Portuguese, Arab and Moroccan cultures. Walking through the picturesque streets was nice, it's a shame that the cisterns were closed and we couldn't visit them.

Not much to see at all BUT if you’re in the area and you have some free time then I’d recommend it. I took a train from Casablanca and I wouldn’t recommend this trip to friends. The city outside of the fortress looks lively with many little eateries. The GOOD thing is that the taxi drivers seem honest here, 10 MAD from the train station to the old city, flat rate. THE CISTERN IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR REPAIRS ( as of September 23 )

I visited El Jadida last March 2014, as a tourist. As your question has only just been sent, I assume you are visiting there in December 2015?
I suggest you contact the tourist board for El Jadida, or if there is none in this town, then the Moroccan tourist board in Casablanca, who will no doubt be able to help you.
