Abbiamo assistito alle funzioni religiosi (compresa la processione) della Pasqua: atmosfera serena, tranquilla, una semplicità a tratti di altri tempi. La cattedrale è imponente, scenografica, che domina sulla grande piazza della città.

Recently been renovated, impressive inside and out and dominates the Cluj old town skyline. Built originally in the 14th century and apparently has a solid gold cross on top of the spire. Big old building.

Sebbene sia la seconda chiesa gotica per dimensioni della Romania, dopo la Chiesa Nera di Brasov, la grande Cattedrale di San Michele non esibisce le sue bellezze a prima vista.
La sua mole imponente e la sua torre, che costituisce un punto di riferimento per chi si deve orientare nel centro di Cluj, si accomoda nella vasta e spaziosa Piazza Unirii. venne costruita tra il XIV e il XV secolo, ma alcune parti, interne ed esterne vennero rimaneggiate. Colpisce la facciata asimmetrica, il portale sovrastato dall'Arcangelo Michele, l'alto campanile ottocentesco con l'orologio, i grandi contrafforti che sembrano reggerla ma anche slanciarla.
L'interno, come quello di molte chiese di questa zona, è arioso e dalle colonne partono fasci di nervature che sorreggono le volte stellate.
Alcuni manufatti artistici all'interno meritano un'occhiata, così come gli affreschi rinascimentali che però risultano danneggiati dal tempo e dai diversi interventi umani che si sono susseguiti nel tempo.
Ci ha colpito molto la scala del campanile (noi l'abbiamo trovata accosta ma aperta per i visitatori), a doppia elica con dei punti di passaggio: questo permette di salire e scendere contemporaneamente con facilità.
Il campanile è alto 80 metri. Potrebbe essere il più alto della Romania, anche se in alcuni testi si trova che il primato spetta alla cattedrale di Timisoara. Pare che Ceaușescu fece un volo cercando di toccarne la punta.
La cattedrale è stata la testimone e centro della vita di Cluj ormai da oltre 700 anni: vale certo la pena di visitarla :-)

I must say what sight for travellers. Amazing Catedral for anyone who is visiting Cluj. This should be the first stop and then you can visit other parts of the city.

It's a nice church located in the city center. It's worth stopping by to admire its great architecture. The interior also looks wonderful after the restauration works.

Det er en super flot og stor kirke i midten af byen, og den absolut ses fra alle sider.
Vi besøgte kirken en dag hvor de lokale nød det gode vejr, stemningen omkring kirken var super behagelig.
Besøger du Cluj, kan du næsten ikke "undgå" at se kirken.

Massive old Church. Good news is you can park outside the church and walk into centre of Cluj with ease. There are some great cafe bars along the streets next to the church, Excellent o sit out on the sidewalk with a beer and a sandwich. The church is free to get in and it is Massive. It is quite basic on the inside. I have been to lots of other smaller churches in Romania and they are Superb - you have to go and see them inside. Ornate, with beautiful icons. I went to a Sunday morning service and it was a lifetime experience. They had a hymn singer and his rhythmic singing was a joy to hear. The church was packed - standing room only. I am not a normal church goer but I would highly recommend you search them out and pay a visit. The Romanian people are very religious folk and churches there are full not like the UK. The Religious Icons are some of the best and ancient art I have ever seen - you can spend a couple hours just looking at the artwork. The Church I visited was in Campia Turzi called Biserica Ortodoxa Nr 3 Sancrai.
