十九路军陵园在水荫路这边,从地铁站下来必须走好一段路才能到达。这里人比另外两个陵园更少。环境更清幽。但是这里管理还是很好的,所以适合来坐坐歇息。

I stayed at Euro Asia Hotel and on a morning stroll around the vicinity of the hotel stumbled into two Martyr cemeteries; one the Huanghuagang Cemetery and the other the 19th Route Army Martyr Cemetery.

The Huanghuagang martyrs perished in their revolutionary attempt to overthrow the `terminally ill' and fragile Qing Dynasty. On the other hand, the 19th Route Army martyrs sacrificed their lives in their battle against the Japanese Imperial Army in Shanghai in 1931/1932. One against the internal enemy and the other against an external opponent.

Guangzhou appears to me a City of Martyrs. Each cemetery testifies to a period of upheavals and turbulence in China's modern history, an era characterized by internal chaos and external intrusions by foreign imperialist powers.

Since the Meiji Restoration, Japan modernized into a great power and technologically, she was at par with the Western Imperialists. Under the pretext of trading, the western powers and Japan stationed their garrisons in Shanghai settlement. In 1931, the Japanese troops blatantly extended their area of territory in the settlement area and launched attacks into China's territory but their attacks were met with fierce resistance from the 19th Route Army. The Japanese warships even forced their way into Shanghai dock to counter ambushed the Chinese army from the rear. It was blatant intrusion and aggression and yet the Japanese had the gut to demand for compensation.

It was national humiliation. The painful historic lesson tells how miserable a technological backward country can end up at the disposal of the hegemonic powers. Despite her size, China lack the punching power that is feared by all the imperialist powers. Both Japan and the Western powers were eager to slice up China.

I stared at the photographs of the martyrs of the 19th Route Army and I pondered: There is no point raking up emotional hatred against Japan. Japan still possess the technological edge in many areas. The Japanese brands: Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc are associated with many quality products. China needs to surpass Japan in the technology sphere not military battle, not hatred. When Chinese brands dominate the global market, China can proudly raise her head and not be bullied again and be equal with any superpower.

The spirits of the 19th Route Army shall then be appeased.
