I love visiting each year with my train loving young son. We always get the museum horseshoe curve package. You won't be disappointed.

This museum far exceeded my expectations. A story of industry, history, culture and innovation is told by the various exhibits. I was especially interested in the section that focused on the laboratories and the research that took place that made the Pennsylvania RR the industry leader that it was for so many years.

It is a unique museum dedicated to Railroad worker life and rail operations. I learned quite a bit about the rail life from this museum. There 3 floors worth of museum space along with a roundhouse on the outside to see how rail engines were turned around.
It will take you a good hour and a half to go through the museum and visit a fair amount of exhibits. There layout is well planned. You get audio and visual props.
There is a entrance fee and a gift shop. You can combine your entrance with a visit to the horseshoe curve 5 miles away.

Small museum and roundhouse with interesting collection of equipment. Very interesting and informative shop tour. Several in-progress steam engine restoration projects can be seen among the displays. Worth a stop.

A very impressive museum. Well worth the stop. Even if you’re not into trains, the history given here is amazing. A lot of interactive portrayals of railroad workers. Tying this in with the Horseshoe Curve museum/observation area only enhances the importance of railway to the expansion of the west and the effects to the city of Altoona.

My husband loves railroads so this was a must stop while in the area. We enjoyed the museum, lots of information. We also toured all the old trains in the adjacent building. An enjoyable afternoon.

You'll learn a lot. While most of the museum is about rail there's a section about life in Altoona during the railroad days. There's also sections and how trains were repaired an area where they experimented to improve trains, explaining railroad stock holdings not surprisingly railroad was big business as well as a model train display and models of rail yards. Artifacts into oil cans, shovels, luggage, and tableware from cars.

I am not a huge railroading fan however, the museum is great! So much interesting history on the railroad in Altoona and how if affected the town and its people. The displays are great and were put together with care. There is a movie to start of with and three floors to explore. There is a caboose outside that you can go in.

We arrived here after visiting the Horseshoe Curve where we purchased the combination ticket good for both sites. It's a large building with exhibits on three floors. Much of it is geared towards kids interacting with the exhibits. The most interesting for us were some of the videos within the exhibits themselves where you could hear the personal stories of the people who grew up in Altoona at the height of the railroad days. You can go through the museum quickly or spend lots of time reading all the plaques. There was supposed to be a video shown in the theater lasting 25 minutes but the equipment wasn't working.
Then you can go outside to view some of the train cars, although none appeared to open to go inside. The roundhouse is also open to view inside.

Being a lover of trains since I was a little kid, this place was a must stop during my trip to Altoona this summer. It surely did not disappoint! Three floors of fascinating and one of a kind exhibits about the Pennsylvania Railroad, plus a beautiful train yard and round house full of locomotives and rail cars. Wonderful gift shop on the first floor and staff was very pleasant. Will definitely be back. Thank you!

The Railroaders Memorial Museum is downtown and Horseshoe Curve & Museum are a few miles outside of town. If you buy a ticket for either, you can go to the other on the same day for no additional charge.

You can buy tickets at the museum not shade trees there or picnic area
The Horseshoe curve has an incline or walk up and there is an area at the top and bottom where you park for shade and a picnic
