I spent one afternoon walking in the Hitchcock woods and the area is very well maintained and beautiful, free to enjoy!

Great for a walk. The e trance was a little hard to find but once we hit the trail it was an easy walk and enjoyable.

This is one of (or I've heard the largest on the east coast) urban forests, and it's very quietly tucked away in the middle of town. There's a lot of hiking trails, but it's all pretty similar looking. If you bring your dog, please keep them leashed for their safety and the safety of the horses. There is no water available and it's easy to get a bit lost, so bring plenty if hiking in the summer.

If you are visiting Aiken, SC and enjoy getting some fresh air, Hitchcock Woods is a great place to check out! It is a diverse forest with over 70 miles of trails open from sunrise to sunset 365 days a year! It is free admission and welcomes all hikers, dog walkers, runners and even equestrian riders! We enjoyed a nice hike in our time here and look forward to coming back.

Wow, what a beautiful park. Lots of great trails and tall trees. I could’ve spent all day here but didn’t bring my best shoes. Wear your hiking shoes or cross trainers if you’re going to be in here for a while. But it is definitely a must do while you’re in Aiken. The foundation that takes care of this place does a fantastic job. It’s a 2100-acre forest with 70 miles of trails. Keep in mind the trails are sandy for people and horses, so wear good shoes. Thanks to the Hitchcock family for donating this land and preserving it for all of us to enjoy.

This review is for the easiest walking trail available which is about an hour long route. Trail start located at 1111-1037 Clark Rd.
An easy trail for beginners though I recommend following the route on an app closely as there are many side trails to get sidetracked with, making the route confusing for first timers. I used the AllTrails app that worked well enough.
Be aware the parking location is very limited without much room to get in and out. You may have to find a suitable location to street park on Clark road itself.

This is a huge wooded area with lots of sandy trails for walking, running, and horseback riding. Access is free!!! It's a beautiful place to take a walk. Lots of shade.

This is probably great for horseback riding. But it is not all that pretty (lots of pines) and the worst part for walking is that the trails are sandy. It is a huge woods if you want to get away.

Many different trails from flat to slightly hilly. Long or short hikes depending on what you are looking for. Small parking areas though we have never had an issue. Well maintained and a great place to horse back ride too.

Over 2200 acres and I dont think 8 saw even a third. Lots of opportunity school over jums, and hack along over great footing. Beautifully maintained.

We would just love to view horses grazing, or in fields after we park our car somewhere, or even just driving past. Any suggestions?

No I do not, since most in the area have their own or board theirs in the area. I am certain your hotel or inn will have the answer to that question.

Bebbington Springs. Is it really a spring? are you able to swin? If so... is just like a pond? Mushy bottom, dark water? Or more like sandy rocky bottom with clear water?

It’s just a tiny trickle. You might not even see it. No way you can swim. No swimming anywhere in Hitchcock woods. Much is sand. Black Gum pond has a murky bottom. Turtles and snakes. Black gum pond is not near Bebbington Springs.

We would like to take 3-4 horses to ride Hitchcock Woods. Is there a recommendation of a boarding facility for the horses for a couple of nights?

There are places that board horses in Aiken. Your best bet would be to Google Aiken Horse Boarding. We walk in Hitchcock often and always see riders.
