Great space for seeing Austin along the Colorado river, we entered near city hall, there was quite a it of garbage and weeds that needed tending to. Lots of joggers and cyclists on the trail. Found Stevie Tay Vaughn too

We took our three kids (13, 11 and 7) on this six mile hike, unsure how they would do. It proved to be tough but doable! We were so proud of them for hanging in there - all those steps were not easy. The trail was mostly shaded and well kept. We went on a random Wednesday, so it was pretty quiet.

We love to hike but haven't been on the trails in quite a while. I'm reasonably fit thanks to regular Pilates, but not the greatest cardio capacity. However, I managed the trail just fine by pacing myself on the ascending stretches. The nice thing about this trail is it has a good mix of ups, downs and flat-ish spots - so there was plenty of time to recover from a long up-hill stretch while keeping forward progress along the trail. We enjoyed the hike on a very sunny day and stayed pretty cool thanks to so much shade throughout.

What a hike! 2736 steps and stairs. I would recomend I starting at the bottom where the pond is and hiking to the top then back doen. It is 6 miles roudn trip but worth it! The views are great and the creak is cool to see as you hike.

Download the AllTrails App and follow the recording for an easy to use guide. This trail is probably the best and most challenging trail Austin has to offer. Still great for all ages and accessible year round. Great way to get some good old nature. Enjoy.

Great hike with challenging ups and down. No great views but quiet nature setting close to city. Reviews mentioned jogging and im a trail runner and that path would be extremely challenging. But a great bun burning hike. Out and back. We saw people mention paying but we were not charged?

River Place is a gem! It’s a great place to recharge, but also get a workout. The stairs and rocky terrain are a challenge, so wear good athletic shoes and bring plenty of water. Yes, they are charging Saturday and Sunday from 8-4. It’s just something to plan around. This trail is worth the trip!

The community is charging a $10 per person fee as of 2 March 2019. This MAY only be on weekends though.

It's a pretty little trail. I'd recommend that a hiker start at the retention pond at the bottom and hike up and back down. I did the reverse, and hiking back up all the steps wasn't how I would have preferred to end the hike.

I'm giving it a 3 instead of 5 since the fee is rediculously high for a hike. If it's free on week days, then it's worth the drive out there.

Went out today to hike this trail system in the River Place neighborhood. This is quite a trail for being located in the city between homes. Two things, first this trail with all the steps is not hard, I would say more moderately difficult unless you are not in condition then it will be a killer for you. second as of March 2nd 2019 that's tomorrow there will be a $10 fee to use the trail per person and another 10 bucks if you bring fido with you. I think Quincy the hiking hound should get by on 5 bucks since he's such a pipsqueak , that's why I hit it today. Now if you want something not too strenuous but still a substantial workout start at the Woodsfield park trail head on Big View Dr and hike in to the C5 sign. There are some of the ominous steps in this section but not to the extent once you pass here. If you chose to do the whole trail there are 2000+ steps in it's entirety. But it's not like you hit them all at once they seem to come in bunches especially past the C5 sign bunches of 50 to 100 at a time but even then there are places where you can get a step or two in before you have to step up again which allows you some quick rest for your legs. I did the whole trail system, Panther Hollow, the Canyon trail and the Fern Trail which is not to be missed on this hike. In the interest of time because yea I gotta work later today I took the Canyon trail to the canyon trailhead on River Place Blvd. I then used the sidewalk (Ugh!) to return to the Fern Trailhead about a mile up the street to the right when you exit the Canyon trail. I then re entered the trail system and took the Fern Trail back to Panther Junction where all the trails meet and re traced the Panther hollow back to the car. By far the short fern trail was the one to see. Fern creek tumbled down the hillside towards Panther creek in a series of small waterfalls and cascades through the rocky terrain. This is a well constructed trail I would put it on par with a National Park trail. Wear good shoes the steps are made from logs that are round and I am sure slick when wet or muddy. Worth the ten bucks you are going to have to pay.

My husband, a friend and I hiked the River Place Trail on a Sunday morning. We parked one vehicle along the road at Panther Hollow Trail head (8820 Big View Dr.) then drove to the other vehicle to Canyon Trail head (4740 River Place Blvd.) and parked along the road. We hike up and down 3.2 miles of hills including 2,736 steps from Canyon Trail head to Panther Hollow Trail head (Boardwalk Pond). That hike direction is downhill but that was hard to tell occasionally. We experienced a few steep passes, several small creek crossings, small waterfalls and 1,700 feet of elevation change. The hike took us 2 hours (with some stops for photos). Normally, we can hike 3 miles in one hour with some photo stops. Our calves were a little sore the next morning from all of the steps. The trail was narrow most of the way. There were mileage signs about every half mile. Take plenty of water to drink. I recommend the trail. The trail access is free now but will cost $10 per person (and $10 per pet) starting March 2, 2019.
