A 2022 revisit to the ever familiar and beautiful American Horticultural Society at River Farm.
One of my top places to visit in Northern Virginia! I am thankful that River Farm remains open to the public in all its natural beauty!
I have personally visited River Farm many times over many years and will continue to do so to the end of my time...

River Farm is a 27-acre landscape that takes its name from a larger plot of land which once formed an outlying part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Located at 7931 East Boulevard Drive in Alexandria, Virginia, it was established in 1653-54 and was designated a Horticultural Landmark by the American Society for Horticultural Science in 2004. The recognition was due to the ability to retain its historic character while at the same time showcasing the best and most environmentally responsible gardening practices. Aside from vistas stretching down to the Potomac River, the property also features extensive and creative play areas for children, a four-acre meadow, an orchard, one of the largest Osage-orange trees in the nation, a grove of rare Franklinia trees, gardens for edible and ornamental plants and scenic resting places for picnickers. Historically, the Kentucky coffeetrees are descendants of those first introduced to Virginia upon Washington's return from surveys in the Ohio River Valley. Such wildlife as bald eagles, foxes and bluebirds are frequently sighted. Visitors to the gardens will marvel at the Andre Bluemel Meadow that features two large black walnut trees dating to Washington's ownership, the George Harding Memorial Azalea Garden, the Wildlife Garden's small pond with frogs, goldfish, tilapia and turtles and the White House Gates, first installed at the White House in 1819 and used for more than 120 years at the White House's northeast entrance.

I visited River Farm recently after a friend told me about their beautiful gardens. Well she wasn’t kidding. It is charming and delightful - a gardener’s paradise. It’s just off of the GW Parkway on your way to Mount Vernon. They are rolling hills, meticulous gardens and a view of the Potomac River. Just lovely.

I was at this property in August 2019 for a wedding. This was a very nice venue for the wedding. Scenic gardens and views of the water. The historic farmhouse was open for self tours during the wedding. A tent was set up behind the house to accommodate all the guests. Hats off to the historical society, who maintains the property !

We had a good time. There was no one around, either in the gardens or in the house to talk with. However, we nosed around and a good time. We will return to see more of the gardens. The house was pretty neat, and I’d like to know more which is why we will return.

This place could be a showcase as it’s located just down the road from Mount Vernon and near Washington DC. Parking spaces are limited. When walking the grounds the ground is very uneven definitely not handicapped friendly. There are some steep inclines. The views of the Potomac River are over grown with limited vision of the river. This is the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society I expected more. None of the plants or trees are labeled as to species.

You may get tired of reading my reviews of The American Horticultural Society at River Farm, however I never get tired of visiting River Farm. I live near Alexandria, VA and one my most favorite places to visit is River Farm and has been for over a decade.
I love taking photographs and particularly that of the beauty of nature at different times of the year, under different light conditions and the familiar and new plants.There has been a recent turnover in some of the personnel at River Farm, however I am always happy to see that the dedication and skill is always of the highest caliber. My last visit to date was last month (November 2018.) I'll show you some of the pictures from this visit.

We walked down the bank of the Potomac River to a shady grove to classical tunes played by a trio hidden under a large tree. The wedding procession followed, with an inspiring ceremony. As we returned to the tented patio, guests shared catered canapes and drinks.A lavish dinner, tears and laughter over speehes by wedding party, and dancing and Carrot Cake.

If you need a break from city crowds or have any interest in gardens or photography or nature this is worth an hour or two on your itinerary. It’s located between Mt Vernon and Old Town (both of which should also be on your itinerary). The views of the river are enjoyable to just sit and watch the birds and boats and planes. The gardens are lovely to walk through, with several benches to stop and enjoy the view. I was first here on a sunny weekday in February with a gardener friend and we enjoyed exploring the grounds, and even in winter the trees and gardens had their own interest and made for an enjoyable walk. Came back for the spring garden sale and the flowers blooming in the gardens were so pretty. Lots of great nature photo ops (my teen is into photography and didn’t want to leave). Planning to visit again in fall with a picnic to see the leaves changing color along the river. As others have said, this is a hidden gem many locals don’t know about.

My last visit was this past week....I KEEP RETURNING TO RIVER FARM! That should give you an idea of how much I enjoy each experience. And...each visit is an experience in itself. Nature is dynamic and those at River Farm who are responsible for this treasure are totally involved with enhancements and continual care throughout the seasons..
Nature, Horticulture and photography go hand in hand as pleasures in my life. River Farm offers all in addition to friendships developed over the years with staff and volunteers.
