Avoid, avoid, avoid! Whatever charm there is in the place is destroyed by over tourism and the insta-generation wanting the unique shot. Once you get over the shock of seeing so many “no photography” sign peppering the place, you’ll be met with hostile residents - especially if you’re “indian”. There’s very much this “we’re not indian” feeling about the place with the residents who should probably have left with the Portuguese anyway :).
We got yelled at for no better reason than walking the streets (no photography or intrusion of privacy), and as such I would avoid this place at all costs. The roads are not private property and really no one should object to one walking on a public road, but there you go!

The place is just for people who want to click or get clicked for social media mostly. The issue is its just 2-3 lanes of Portuguese style houses and obviously they are private properties where they don't allow photography. Still people manage to sneak and click pictures.

Beautiful architecture to explore along with cure cafes and nice restaurants. Lots of goan food, and also art shops/boutiques to browse. It's a well preserved heritage corner in Goa and can be a nice place to wind down for food or drinks along with some shopping.

Being a Goan myself, my friends and I were excited to visit this place but when we went there it was never the same. I understand and respect that they do not like people taking pictures but why do people from out of India are allowed to take pictures and not us. Why the difference? it happened right in front of us. All in all it was not a wonderful experience. But do respect the people and specifically the Church there and do not disrespect the place.

What a beautiful place to visit very peaceful when we were there I did notice a lot of signage asking for no photos to be taken I don’t quite understand that it must be good for local businesses if the beauty of the area brings people in there are also loads of cctv cameras about we did take photos and weren’t challenged by any we really enjoyed our visit

Tourists are NOT SO WELCOME HERE NOW. I believe that one of the very lesser known facts and tourists need to be educated about is that most of this area has PRIVATELY OWNED PROPERTIES AND HOUSES along with few cafés and restaurants. Hence, it is obvious and completely understandable that the locals are fatigued and agitated by the large volumes of crowd that pours this area during peak tourism times / weekends / holidays. Moreover, most of the area is mentioned as “NO PHOTOGRAPHY” zones but is confusing to understand what is okay and what’s not okay when it comes to photography. Thus, you may face a rage and shouts from the locals when you overstep the borders.
Locals have somehow developed an idea and an understanding that tourists are more interested in peeping into their daily private lives than being genuinely fond of the beauty of this place and just trying to capture few loving memories back home with them.
The place is beautiful but I am forced to rate it as “Terrible” due to the recent experience from locals and I would encourage people to skip visiting this place until it is brought back in order with clear guidelines by the local officials and people and until it becomes tourist-friendly again!

it is a heritage neighborhood in Panjim, Goa and is known for its colorful colonial-style houses, narrow lanes, with a vibrant Portuguese influence. It was once a quiet residential area but has now become a popular tourist spot, with little cafes, art galleries, and local restaurants. However, the influx of visitors has overwhelmed residents, especially with tourists taking photos of private homes, infringing on their privacy. It was also published in the news lately.
If you visit, please be respectful and avoid photographing private residences and remember to be a responsible tourist. Appreciate the beauty of Fontainhas while respecting the privacy of those who call it home.

Please read this review carefully before deciding to visit, and set your expectations accordingly.
Firstly, you are not welcome there. This is not a place for leisurely walks or casually taking pictures for memories. It's a very private neighborhood where residents are hostile towards outsiders. This isn't meant negatively—the residents are likely frustrated by the unwanted attention from Instagram/TikTok crowds. However, it can be shocking to see how they treat tourists who are simply interested in seeing the old part of town and perhaps capturing a picture of the street (not anyone's home) for memories.
To tourists interested in exploring old Goa: Do you really want to visit a place where you are so unwelcome? Consider trying the museums or other attractions instead. The cafes at Fontainhas aren't particularly noteworthy anyway. Even if you follow all the rules on the placards, there's a high chance you'll still be shouted at.
To tourists coming for reels/photoshoots: Please DON'T. It's a private neighborhood, and your actions are disruptive.
To the residents: If you offer services like cafes or shops to the public, do you really expect that tourists won't take a single photo of the area (not specifically anyone's house or the Church) for memories? If that's unacceptable, please ask them politely first—99% will oblige. If that's still not acceptable, consider making your neighborhood a gated community.
Overall, it's a 'lose-lose' situation for both tourists and residents. It's best to leave them be and visit somewhere else.

Not immediate vicinity. You will have to walk if you really want to explore the place and its neighbourhood. We did not face much problem as we used a cab.
