An awesome climb for the best view of Sigiriya. Please note that you will have to remove your shoes at the white picketed gate as you reach a Buddhist temple. They also provide scarfs to cover yourself if you’re in a singlet - there is somewhere to go them off to before you make your ascent.
This is a challenging climb for someone with not great knees/joints as the steps are unevenly placed/thickness.
Near the top there is a beautiful Buddha on its side inset into the rock. The final scramble is not for the faint hearted you will need upper body strength to pull yourself up.
The pay off is THAT view as you crawl through the final opening. It’s spectacular. On a clear afternoon it’s priceless. You can see why lion rock is the 8th wonder if the world.
It was extremely windy at the top.

Climbing the Pidurangala rock will treat you with a stunning view of the Sigiriya citadel.
Early morning or late afternoon climbing is advisable to avoid scorching sun.
However, this climbing is not suitable for old people, pregnant mothers or kids as climbing to the top will be through rocks and no proper staircase. Good pair of sneakers will be more beneficial.
There is a temple on the way to the top of Pidurangala and therefore climbers are required to cover there legs and arms properly.
If wearing a short, there are some clothing available at the entrance until you pass the temple.

I highly recommend Pidurangala rock over Lion's rock. The hike is easy in the beginning with steps and is slightly uphill with beautiful high trees all around, until you reach a short rocky spot towards the end where you need to kind of climb some rocks for less than 5 minutes to get to the top. The view is mind blowing at sunset as you can spot the Lion's rock and see the Pidurangala round rock as well. The hike down is easier than up and the trail is lit with lamps. You can also do it at sunrise but it's as magical at sunset and less hot to walk down at night than in the morning. More reviews @myra.recommends

Vor dem Aufstieg kleiner Tempelbereich, hier müssen die Schuhe ausgezogen werden. Der Eintritt kostet mittlerweile 1000 Rupien - vor einem Jahr noch 500! - dann geht es die Stufen hinauf durch den Wald. In der Hitze ganz schön anstrengend, man sollte ein paar kleine Pausen einplanen. Wir waren am Nachmittag dort und wollten zum Sonnenuntergang oben sein, sind also ca. um 16:45 Uhr gestartet. Unterwegs kommt man an einem liegenden Buddha vorbei, der sich ebenfalls für eine Verschnaufpause anbietet.
Ein Geheimtipp ist Pidurangala jedenfalls nicht mehr, als kurz vor dem Ziel der Kletterteil begann, mussten wir an einer Stelle recht lange warten, um absteigende Leute vorbeizulassen. Ich persönlich fand diesen letzten Teil schon hinreichend schwierig, aber wenn man etwas geschickt und weniger ängstlich ist als ich, sollte es kein Problem sein. Oben war einiges los, aber die Aussicht ist definitiv den Aufstieg wert, Panoramablick über Sigiriya Rock, den Dschungel und im Hintergrund die Berge, wunderschön!
Da die Sonne voraussichtlich kurz vor dem Untergehen in einer Wolkendecke verschwunden wäre, entschieden wir uns kurz vorher für den Abstieg, was für uns die richtige Entscheidung war. Oben auf dem Felsen war es noch hell, aber sobald wir in den Wald kamen, wurde es schnell dämmrig, und obwohl wir Lampen dabei hatten, wäre ein Abstieg im Dunkeln recht unangenehm gewesen. Darüber hinaus waren oben ziemlich viele Leute, die wahrscheinlich nach Sonnenuntergang alle gleichzeitig mit dem Abstieg begonnen hätten.

We climbed the rock for sunrise and it was an amazing experience. The kids are 5 and 7 and they were able to do it with the help of a guide. We got one from the hotel so I highly recommend that as some parts are a little difficult to get through.
All in all a super experience!

This is an absolute must do if you’re in Sigiriya. Full 360 degrees of the area and one hell of a sunset.
I’d recommend getting up there a good 45 mins or so before the actual sunset, just to make sure you get a good spot and don’t get caught in the queue. It takes about half hour or so to get up and is a little tricky to scale the rocks in the last 5 mins… but if you’re semi-fit and agile you’ll be fine.

Beautiful views from the top of the city and the Sigiriya rock. Truly a wonder in Sri Lanka. The climb itself was exciting and adventurous. Definitely something unique in the nation.

We went to watch the sunrise and it was a good decision:) It was a bit cloudy at the time, but still a great view of the neighboring Lion Rock. It is wise to take a tuk tuk to the starting point if you want to see the sunrise, as there is a chance of encountering a wild elephant in the morning. It took us 15 minutes to walk from the starting point to the top. The entrance fee is much lower than for the Lion Rock - 1000 rupees and the crowd is not that big either.

Sur conseil de notre guide, nous avons démarré la montée à 5h15 pour être aux avant-postes pour le lever de soleil : SOMPTUEUX.
Prévoir des chaussures car escaliers en pierre (pas toutes la même taille), puis la dernière partie (plus sportive) se fait parmi des rochers.
Impressionnant de nuit, la descente de jour est une quasi formalité.
Mais le jeu en vaut la chandelle car le spectacle est magique

The hike to the top of Pidurangala is a bit difficult.
The hike to Pidurangala takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on your fitness levels.
The hike starts at Pidurangala Sigiri Rajamaha Viharaya, a temple at the base of the rock. And than endless stairs start and than some off-roading through the jungle with no clear demarcated route.
However, after all the struggle once u reach at the top of Pidurangala, you get the best views of Sigiriya Rock. The Sunset here is majestic.

It s depend on where you go if you stay in Dabulla or Sigiriya best way take tuk tuk and go there no direct bus that location if not from colombo airport better to take car

Take a bus to Dambulla then probably easiest to Uber or hire a private driver to take you to Sigiriya. There may be some private and public buses but it's not far so I'd recommend going by car.

I am wearing hijab, so there is no chance for me to climb the pidurangala as all head covers need to be removed while passing by the entrance?

YES, This is the experience we had this January. I would be concerned about going to Sri Lanka at such times where racial tensions are high
I'm going to Sri Lanka after a long time and stay just three weeks. Watching photos made me really sick to climb Pidurangala rock but doubtful because of my two-year-old toddler. what are the suggestions? Is it too much for the baby?

Best option take a train to Anuradapura spend some time there and then take a bus to Dambulla....climb Pidurangala in d morning as early or evening orelse it is too hot.....from dambulla there are buses almost every hour to Sigiriya and then take a tuk tuk to Pidurangala it cost around 300. I was there at 5am, paid my 500 and started hiking to reach the top for sunrise. You need a flashlight or I used my iPhone light.
