Rug buying with education and humour with Mr Butt at Kashmir. My group wanted to experience carpet buying and I had them do it at the beginning of the trip. Prices were negotiated and overall experience enjoyable for my small group. Also had quality shawls and some trinkets. The silver jewellery is not real silver so stay away from that. All purchases arrived safely in USA and Canada with no extra taxes on a timely basis and no rug creases. One gal had a problem with one of her small carpets fringe starting to unravel and they promptly sent another replacement. As a travel agent I have been to many of these "informative workshops" so I include this only if the clients have an interest otherwise I have my guides not include any shopping unless asked. No outward pressure to buy.

I am attaching an email with complaints to the trip organizer, Indian Travel Waves, about their services, and in particular about the driver and interpreter I was provided with in Delhi. (March 2020):

I am in receipt of your email wherein you advise that I have not paid the interpreter you provided for me in Varanasi.

I would like to pay the interpreter directly. Please provide me with all his contact details.

The reasons I want to pay the interpreter directly is because I am completely lost in your complicated accounting, and, of course, the over-charging of services. For instance, the actual train ticket cost was low yet you over-charged for it....and I was was supposed to be first class.

In addition, I felt harassed by you: for instance, you called me at 8:00 a.m. at my hotel room, asking for more money; and then you sent someone to the hotel, again to ask for money....more money, as I had already paid you more than enough.

I would also like to make a complaint against the driver and interpreter in New Delhi.

I told both the driver and the interpreter that I did not want to see any temples and that I wanted to go to Old Delhi. I asked repeatedly yet they did not take me to Old Delhi saying it was too far. I looked on GoogleMaps and Old Delhi was no further than the airport to my hotel.

I told the interpreter that I wanted to buy a table cloth for my mother and told him which shop I was interested in. Instead, he brought me to a shop of his choosing. All the interpreters have taken me to shops of their preferences and I understand that they get commissions/paybacks for doing so. I understand the economy and understand the financial difficulty the interpreters face so I did not object. I did not have a problem with this practice until Delhi.

The driver and interpreter brought me to Kashmir Kashmir shop in Delhi where I was taken advantage of.

I understand that I must assume some of the responsibility, however, I was taken gross advantage of and neither your driver or your interpreter assisted me....actually they were complicit in the transaction and I wonder how much commission they made from the transaction and how much Indian Travel Waves made.

I was in the shop surrounded by the proprietor, about five of his male employees and the interpreter.....who slyly left the room at a certain point so that the proprietor could abuse me financially and the interpreter could turn a blind eye. I said I wanted a table cloth. The proprietor kept showing me bedspreads, which is fine. Then the proprietor asked for an exorbitant price, about $1,300 CDN. We agreed to $500 which I knew was ridiculously expensive but I was very uncomfortable (I am a woman alone surrounded by men in a closed environment) and wanted to leave. While the employee was folding the bedspread/tablecloth I saw a knowing look between the proprietor and the employee when the employee tore off the price tag with the real price. I noted that the employees (who are probably mistreated) were uncomfortable with what was happening.

Later, I noted on Trip Advisor that that same shop has taken advantage of many people yet drivers and interpreters keep taking their clients there....and I imagine they do so with your knowledge.

Even though there is probably no legal obligation on the part of drivers and interpreters to take care of their clients, there is a moral obligation to do so. They are ''ambassadors'' of your country to visitors who have limited if any knowledge of your country and your language and are putting their trust and welfare into the hands of their tour organizer, their driver and their interpreter.

The actions of this particular driver and this particular interpreter are shameful.

As I am generous and somehow feel sorry for their limited income, I still gave each of them a substantial tip for their (lack) of services.

Again, I would like you to provide me with the exact amount in Rupees of the sum that is owed to the Varanasi interpreter and his contact info.

Note that I am posting this to Trip Advisor.

They DONOT sell genuine silk rugs - it´s ART silk from bamboo.... even though I bought one as a genuine natural silk. I found out when I got the rug and I had it tested!!!!!
Furthermore they didnt pay the tax, even though i have been writing with them and they comfirmed they would pay - I was stuck on the extra bill at home.
So save your money and your good spirit - STAY AWAY!

Beware these absolute con artists! My friend and I were taken here by a tour guide as part of our tour.

We were pressured and pressured into buying a rug that was supposedly pure silk hand made and from Kashmir...Guilt tripped, told it was an investment that would last for years. We paid a lot of money only to find out 2 days later we had been conned and in fact it was fake! Not silk and certainly not hand made! This we found out by taking it for a second opinion to a ship within our 5* hotel.

Full of worry and regret for the remainder of our trip. Only by luck was the money returned to us through help of the tour company we went with. I’m sure if they hadn’t have been to vigilant in helping us we’d have never seen it again! Wolves dressed in sheeps clothing. Beware Mr Butt!

We visited as part of a tour of Dehli. I was sceptical as usual when the tea arrived and then the carpet making demo started.
But, I've always liked these richly coloured, elegant rugs so I showed a good deal of interest in the ones we were shown.
Anyway, cutting a long story short, I bartered with the man showing them to us and bought one for a price that I was very happy with.
They were happy for us to be photographed with it, insisted that I sign the back of it in marker pen so that I was happy that I would receive the right one and then agreed a forward date for postage to make sure it didn't arrive home before us (postage was free by the way).

I actually emailed them on day 5 (postage was quoted as 5 to 7 days) for the tracking number and they replied within the hour saying that it was shown as "out for delivery". Sure enough it arrived shortly afterwards.

It looks superb, isn't creased and has my signature on the back.

So as I say "Credit where credit is due", I have no complaints whatsoever.

I implore anyone that attempts to visit this place that they thoroughly advise against it. As a 'customer' we were hugely pressured at buying a rug at a price well out of our budget. Our guide did not help whatsoever as he probably was given a cut out of the transaction and we wasted a lot of our money on a rug that were being forced to purchase. They won't let you leave unless you buy something that clearly is overpriced. The owner is a complete wolf in sheeps' clothing and don't fall for their scheme. If your guide insists you go, PLEASE SAY NO because once you fall into their trap it is really difficult to escape.

Dr Butt is a funny man. He educates you on the making of rugs in his county. He speaks to the cooperative that the rug makers come from and he does it it such a soothing and loving way.

The tea is served and the lessons begins. He talks of the history of rug making, the talent and time involved and educates you on all things Persian. We went with a group and I felt completely safe. At the end of the day it is up to you and your ability to negotiate. I enjoyed our experience and I purchased a beautiful wall hanging and we purchase a beautiful Persian rug later. I picked it out while there but could not decide on it. My husband stayed in contact with Dr Butt and negotiated the price. He recently surprised me with it for my birthday in August.

I love it!

Tips:

-Go in the morning
-Be patient and enjoy the tea
-Listen intently
-Don't go alone - it eases the negotiation process
-Have two pieces in mind - one you can afford and one you would LIKE to afford.
-Purchase one and negotiate the other.
-The purchased item - write your name on it
-Be comfortable saying NO

We bought a rug on October 29th, and they specifically packaged it up so it would not crease. 3 months later and the rug is still severely creased on every single fold. We emailed them multiple times with no response. Professor Butt and company are very friendly to your face, but it is very apparent that they only want to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. Do not fall for their routine!
