When Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya was in his heyday, the reigning Sultan in Delhi was Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. Nizamuddin Auliya had become so popular and had acquired such a large following that he had also become very influential, and the Tughlaq began to perceive him as a threat to the Tughlaq’s own power. The animosity between the Sultan and the saint grew to such an extent that the Tughlaq even vowed to kill Nizamuddin.

The story goes that when Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq was building his fort (at Tughlaqabad), at the same time, Nizamuddin Auliya was having a baoli (stepwell) excavated at a spot in Ghiyaspur (the name then given to the area now known as Nizamuddin). Tughlaq, when he heard of this, was furious and tried to stop the work on the baoli by decreeing that all workers should, during the day, only be working at the Tughlaqabad site. The workers at the baoli got around this law by working at Tughlaqabad during the day and at the baoli at night. Then Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq passed another law, banning the sale of oil for lamps—thus, effectively, stopping the baoli workers from working at night.

But Nizamuddin was not stopped so easily: it is said that because of his piety, he was able to make the water of the baoli glow at night, thus enabling the workers to keep working and finish the baoli.

Because of its close connection with Nizamuddin himself, the water of the baoli has long been believed to have curative powers. Nowadays, the water is so filthy and stagnant that it seems very unlikely that it would heal anything. However, if you’ve come all the way to the Dargah, it’s worth going a little further to see the baoli as well. The way to the baoli is through the dargah enclosure—a closed, floored path leads from the dargah courtyard to the baoli. You cannot approach the water now since there is a metal gate (and a security guard), but you can look at it, as well as at the surrounding buildings and the stonework of the baoli, which was restored just a few years back.

The Nizamuddin Baoli is a stepwell. Built in the 14th century, it’s the only surviving stepwell in Delhi that is still used to hold water. The stepwell is located in the same complex as the Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia Dargah, an islamic shrine to Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya. Some consider the water holy and take a dip. Considering how dirty the water looks, I’d personally give it a miss. To be honest, the whole well just looks like a dirty tank.

We have been visiting India since 1984 and had never heard of this baoli or any other baolis in India. It is an ancient stepwell, great for photos and sketching. A peaceful place open from 9am until 5pm daily. Very beautiful the way it has been constructed. Pigeons and bats frequent these places.

This baoli within the Nizamuddin Dargah Complex is very sacred to the followers of Sufi Saint Nizamuddin. This is about 800 years old and is one of the most prominent baoli in Delhi.
It is said that the Saint wanted a baoli for his followers in the present Nizamuddin Basti and it happened at the time when Delhi Sultan Ghiausdin Tughlaq was constructing his fort at Tughlaqabad. Desirious of speedy completion of his fort he forbade workers from working anywhere except his fort. Devotion to the Saint was so much that workers worked on this baoli in the night. When the Sultan forbade sale of oil to stop night work, a miracle happened through the principal follower of the Saint, namely Chirag-i-Dilli which saw water of the baoli turning as oil for the night work.
Ever since the baoli is sacred to the followers of the Saint while Tughlaqabad fort was abandoned and is a virtual waste within a few years of its completion.
