I lowered my expectations based on earlier reviews, but felt it was an indoor activity worth seeing during down time (it's free). I was pleasantly surprised at the caliber of exhibits and design.
The Sapa Museum is mainly in the top building where the tourism offices are located. The museum was clean and informative with explanations in Vietnamese, French and English. It primarily explained the history of the area as a recreational respite for the French military and the 5 ethnic groups residing in the area. The floor below has a handicraft shop, but also an area where you can watch the workers in action. There is a garden too.
In the lowest building is an interpretation center of the area's tourism. The French bombed their original town buildings in 1952 rather than have them taken by the NVA, and the area basically laid dormant until the 1990s. Gave me a better understanding of Sa Pa and how tourism operates.

This place is heaven for people who loves hand embroidered items. Speaking of quality, i can say its a 10 and really beautiful.

I'm a bit disappointed that the place isn't well-maintained. It seems the authorities focus more on tourism rather than educating or informing visitors about the unique culture of the locals.

I had a few hours to kill after arriving at Sapa just after midday and thought the museum looked interesting. Access is through what appears to be a shop which is well lit and selling mostly ethnic minority garments and souvenirs. Upstairs is the real museum. The lights were off, the exhibits were dusty and the whole place looks like it’s suffering from severe neglect.

I visited the museum which was on the top floor of a small wooden building in the heart of Sapa.
The exhibits and information on display were quite interesting, however require some maintenance as they are a bit shabby and falling into disrepair.

Free museum in a beautiful building.
We learn the history of the city since its creation.
We also understand the history of ethnic minorities, it's really great with lots of photos, costumes, musical instruments, paintings, traditional objects... It's very culturally rich.
If you have 1 hour free, don't hesitate.
The captions are written in English, French and Vietnamese.
You will also find a shop there which sells traditional objects handmade by women from the surrounding villages.

Seems like it’s been close for a while now. When I walk in there was nothing in there looks very run down and deserted. Best to check with your receptionist at hotel before heading over if they will be open.

It's closed at the time of our visit. Wondering if they close during off season. Wtf. I don't know..

A very good small museum with lots of newish photo info boards showing lots of info on the local groups who live around the area. Clothing, artifacts etc - the embroidery and clothe preparation areas particularly good. There is a large gift shop on the ground floor, and most of it looks really good even to my untutored eyes. As to prices, it depends I guess on what your comparison is, and your budget.

Located in the upper floor of a 2-storey wooden house, where ground floor was a souvenir and handicraft shop and a supposedly Tourist Info Center but no one at the counter.
Fair amount of exhibits and posters.
I am very much into fabrics like the hemp, brocade and embroidery, so was especially thrilled to find the information on the tribal embroidery culture. If you’re into buying some souvenirs of embroidery and brocade products, suggest you read up some exhibits here regarding different patterns from the various tribes.
Note: the souvenir shop below the museum has very good quality products but they are not the cheapest, I would not buy from here.
