Alot of information on the history, the detail, pictures and statues. It felt like taking a trip back in history. Must have plenty of time to read all the information on display. Very interesting

Possibly one of the best museums we have been to. My teenage daughter was very impressed that there was no bias, just the facts were presented. The memorial to the fallen women and children of the Anglo Boer war is incredibly moving especially when you realize how many more names were actually lost.
I would definitely recommend a stop here.

We came here to learn about the Boer War as this museum is one of the few that exists. The museum is here as are several monuments to various war related people. The museum has many exhibits but lack a cohesive narrative history, so it is initially hard to determine what to read and what order things should be approached. But after a while the picture becomes clear and you leave the museum having learned a lot about English/Boer relations and the war. One thing that become clear in the exhibits is that more woman and children died in the war than soldiers. This happened because the English used a slash and burn method to subdue the Boers and in doing this they left many woman and children homeless. They were then rounded up and forced into concentration camps. Because of the lack of food and sanitation services thousands will die before the war ends. This is why the museum includes many exhibits about the concentration camps and its victims. It is also why the largest monument at the museum complex is to the woman and children that died because of this conflict. When you come here you need identification. The grounds are large with a museum that is undergoing some construction. The Museum is not heated and was very, very cold when we were there so bring appropriate clothing.

The museum provides a brilliantly curated history of the Boer Wars from a political and people perspective. It is very balanced, both sides of the story are explained equally. We had a tour guide, she was excellent and really brought the story to life (sorry, can't recall her name). I would thoroughly recommend getting a guide but it is still worth exploring on your own. A must see in Bloemfontein.

There is both an outdoor/garden area to this museum as well as indoors. There is so much history associated with this that many are not even aware of (even worse for foreigners). There is a cafe/restaurant onsite as well but it was closed for a private event while we were there.
Total time needed here is 2-3 hours.

Excellent Museum far bigger than expected. So much detail. It was only R20 per person, very good value. Also a beautiful memorial outside and a lovely setting.

Before you go you should realize that this is a museum about war, not about peace. The war was waged by two relatively small Boer republics against the most powerful nation in the world at the time Britain. It started as a white men's war and was triggered by control over newly discovered diamond and goldmines in Transvaal (Kimberley and Jo'burg area). Eventually the Boer republics lost and colonial power Britain prevailed.
The war effort is very well documented, not just with information in writing, but also with photos, paintings, maquettes and real size replicas of for instance tents and people. The scorched earth tactics by the British army: setting fire to the Boer farms and displacing their women, children and workers and confining them to concentration camps where tens of thousands of them died, caused in an international outcry, but it also proved an effective strategy to force the Boer commanders and militants on their knees. the British victory proved to be a Pyrrhic victory as their losses were significant as well. Moreover, the British had to find a way to bring the different population groups together to sustain development of their colonies.
I left the museum with ambiguous feelings. On the one hand admiration for the toughness and courage of the Boers, while at the same time considering the hopelessness of their situation already from the beginning of the war in 1899.
The museum is on a well-guarded compound with many other exhibits and memorials. It is located 3.3 km south of the center of Bloemfontein.
Bring your passport or identity card as without it you can not enter the premises.
Entrance fee to the museum is 20 Rand.
It is allowed to take photos.
