I made sure I was in Johannesburg on a Sunday so I could attend this market which is held on the roof of the Rosebank Mall. It is not just for tourists as there were many locals and expats wandering the aisles and rummaging through the extensive second hand book counters. I bought jewelry, Christmas decorations, yoga pants, a shoulder bag, and other souvenirs. I would have bought more , but I already had a weight problem with my luggage. There is also a range of excellent paintings, cushion covers and home decor items, toys and unique clothing. They even had a Thai foot massage place for when you got tired of walking. Food and drinks were also available.

Deze markt bestaat uit twee delen: in de kelder van het Rosebank shoppingcentrum is er een permanente markt. Daar is heel veel keuze (wel 100 standen), maar door het grote aanbod dringen de verkopers wel aan om je aandacht te krijgen.
Op het dak (in de parkeergarage) is er enkel op zondag een markt en daar gaat het er een stuk relaxer aan toe. Wij hebben hier nog wat leuke souvenirs gevonden.

Fun place for handcrafted african items. Get ready for the hustle of the vendors trying to get you to come to their shop, as most craft markets. I wanted a jacket that wasn't in my size and truly impressed how the vendor told me he would make one for me and to return the next day. I did and he had it ready. It's a great place to shop. It's also great that it is indoors.

Our family travelled around South Africa for 3 weeks in February and March 2022 and we had quite some problems getting traditional South African souvenirs. Luckily we came across this market the last day. It is really a perfect place for souvenirs. We bought many things, but were unfortunately almost the only tourists there. If we had more place in our backpacks, we would have bought more. I highly recommend this place.

Fantastic place to Visit and remember to go to the downstairs section as there are many more stalls to view with crafts ranging from South Africa to Kenya to Zimbabwe, it is well worth a visit

It was a nice place to visit, but you really had to look to find unique things or really good deals. Don't be afraid to barter!

We are planning on visiting this market tomorrow, and we despise bartering! Someone has suggested that payong 1/3 of proposed price is ok, another has suggested that saving 25-30% is fine. All feedback welcome and appreciated.... what offers would be appropriate? 25% off, 50% off??? Also, roughly what amount of time should we budget for this visit? Thank you!!!

We visited in January we got about 20% off they were very reluctant to come down in price much at all, we are used to bartering in the Far East where you get about 50% off but not here but the quality is good so prices are fair. We spent a couple of hours there which was plenty of time, enjoy.

HI, before meeting friends, I will be alone in Johannesburg for one day and nite. I love markets, especially handicrafts. Is the Rosebank market safe for me alone? Is it open on Saturdays? Many thanks in advance, Beth

Hi Beth, answers are yes and yes.
You will feel quite safe there. Also agree with Michelle to keep your wits about you. Don't allow wallets to be seen etc. Food hall also very good, give it a try.

not 100% sure....we ubered it. however, the market is located on the upper deck of a parking garage, so my guess is there probably is, but get there early!!

I think the rooftop us only on Sundays, and the craft market is there all the time. The rooftop is much larger, but generally most of the items are similar.
